Battling Demons

Rate this book
When Dr. Martin Ellingham arrived in the little Cornish fishing village of Portwenn a little more than four years ago, he was still reeling from his devastating fall from grace. Once a renowned London vascular surgeon, he had been blindsided by haemophobia and forced from the surgical theatre.
Martin came to Cornwall in hopes of securing the position of Portwenn’s General Practitioner. He was expecting a hospitable and perhaps even welcoming environment, but then he met Louisa Glasson.
The spiky but beautiful young school teacher, who served as the lay-member on his interview panel, immediately dismissed his impressive credentials and challenged his suitability as the village’s standard-bearer for health.
Though his skills as a surgeon were unsurpassed, dealing with people had never been Martin’s strong suit. And as Miss Glasson made clear to him immediately, “If you want to be a GP in our village, then social skills and a good bedside manner are really essential.”
But the school teacher found the doctor had an unconventional appeal, and she was immediately drawn to him.
And for the new GP, the ways of the quirky inhabitants of the village would have made life in Portwenn unbearable if it weren’t for Louisa Glasson’s presence there.
Despite their frequent rows, a romantic relationship developed between the new doctor and the school teacher. The path their tumultuous relationship took was a convoluted one, leading them from an aborted wedding, to parenthood, the altar, and finally to a marriage in crisis.
For more than four decades Martin had kept the demons spawned by an abusive childhood buried. But the stresses of fatherhood and married life had exhumed them, and the hour of reckoning had come.

Love, love the Battling Demon series. What fantastic writing Kris Morris!!

If you are a fan of Doc Martin, the British Show set in the fictional town of Portwenn, in Cornwall, UK do not miss the Battling Demons series. This is a series that grew out of Kris Morris' own fanfiction. Through this series she took the fanfiction stories to an entirely new level. What is wonderful about this series is that, Kris takes the actual characters from the TV show, Martin and Louisa Ellingham as well as the unique villagers (that's what makes te TV show outstanding), Martin's Aunt Ruth and spins her own stories that beautifully maintains the authenticity of the TV show. You cannot but think the TV show's writers SHOULD take a story line or two from this series.

I have added a good number of new words to my vocabulary. Some words brought back memories of my preparation for GRE eons ago (Eg. Chimerical). The books capture the essence and quirks of each of the actual Doc Martin characters to the extent one can really imagine the voice and intonation of each of the characters. Kris has done tremendous amount of research on the medical issues. In addition, I love how she beautifully and authentically wove in the Psychotherapy related topics. As a person who believes in Psychotherapy and psychologists I find this series to be a welcome change from how the folks in mental health field are often depicted (unfairly so) as "shrinks" in most media.

All in all, fantastic series and a lovely way for those of smitten by DM to keep our flames alive between seasons.

Read the entire series. There are 7 books in this series.

It was so great reading this book...wishing the series could be a little more like this book. It was nice to see Martin and Louisa trying to work out their issues. Can't wait to start the next book.

If you love the television show Doc Martin, then you won’t want to miss this wonderful series of books Battling Demons by gifted writer Kris Morris. Kris delves much deeper into the everyday lives of Doctor Martin Ellingham, his wife Louisa and their relationship with each other as well as with the quirky inhabitants of Portwenn. Kris captures the essence of these characters we have grown to love and brings them to life! You can visualize each character in her books speaking the dialogue with the exact intonations and facial expressions they possess on the show. I have been moved to tears on more than one occasion! Kris has devoted her time, gifts and talents to HorseCourse, a children’s charity in Dorset, England, where all proceeds from the sale of these books go to this charity. I have purchased all 8 volumes through Amazon.com where I’m a Prime member and can get them in just 2 days & free shipping upon ordering. I have read all 8 books of this wonderful series finishing her most recent titled “Interactions”. I couldn’t put it down! You won’t be sorry, trust me! And who can turn down such a worthy charity? Enjoy and tell me what you think!! Check out Kris’ website:

This is a Fan Fiction novel based on the Brit TV show "Doc Marten". I am fortunate enough to know the author Kris Morris, so I was eager to read her take after I viewed Season 1. In essense you could compare this to those lady's magazine articles titled "Can this Marriage Be Saved". The bulk of the book involves the psychological struggle between "Dr. Logical" and "Mrs. Emotional". It is very well written delving into the past of both Martin and Louisa as they struggle to make their marriage work. The psychologist Dr. Newell calmly leads them in their self discovery. But take heart there are still plenty of segements with the colorful local characters that I grew to love on the TV Show.

Doc Martin and Louisa

Since I'm an obsessed fan of DOC Martin, I naturally gravitated towards this series of books. Kris Morris includes most characters in the more current series of Doc Martin and presents them quite accurately. In fact, she is spot on with their dialogue and actions, thought processes and relationships. I read this book in two days and it was a pleasure. I would recommend this book and the entire series to anyone interested in sensual romance and medical/psychiatric issues. Martin, Louisa and James, their adorable son, will steal your heart.
