The Battle of Armageddon wasn't the end. When the demons and angels were done fighting, the world was left a charred wasteland roamed by ghouls, demons, and savage scavengers. In this desolate world, the last bastions of humanity hid behind the walls of the Citadels, protected by humans endowed with special powers by the angels before they abandoned Earth to the dark forces. But when a young girl shows a special gift, a spark of hope is rekindled for the future of mankind...if the Watchman Luka and his friends can keep her alive.
This short is completely different than any other post-apocalyptic story I've read in the past. The characters feel like a rag-tag group of super-heros and special forces trying to survive in a world of zombie demons. That sounds like a lot of genre mixing but it works because it all flows from the basic setup. Archangels and Demons using the humans as proxies for their war after Armageddon has come.
The settings are real places which happen to be nearby, which was pretty cool for me. And the fact that the main characters had such unassuming backgrounds before everything (literally) went to hell made them very relatable. I especially like the fact that the main character is still an atheist even with all this going on. That is just awesome.
It was a quick read that definitely whet my appetite for more of the same. I hope the author keeps exploring the world. While it definitely stands on its own, I think it could also be a decent intro to a more developed set of stories following some time perhaps a generation or two in the future.
This is a wonderfully dark romp through the apocalypse. An interesting take on the theological aspect of the End Times. It may not appeal to those who are dead-set in their religious ways. It will, however, allow those with an open mind to think twice about their beliefs.
