Is there such a thing as the ‘perfect family’? One might have grown up in the era that saw the mum, dad and two children combination, and may class THAT as perfect. But what if the family consists of one parent, and one child? The child being ‘different’ from others his age, having specific ways of doing things as well as having no idea who his father is. Is that perfect? Bit of a daft question isn’t it? Who are we to judge where ‘perfect families’ are concerned, Dawn doesn’t. After all, she is the one living the single life with her child not many people can understand, but she loves him. He’s her son and that in itself is perfect. A perfect family is your family, whether that is biologically, or via other means; but it can take a pretty perfect person to volunteer their womb to fulfil another families dream. If only it was as straight forward as that. Is hope ‘All That Is Left Of Us’?

Catherine Miller is back with yet another intense and thought-provoking read, one I had high hopes for given the bar she had set with the previous novel.
As soon as the book starts, we meet Dawn, bump and a very excited sister-in-law getting themselves prepared for the upcoming birth. Sounds pretty straight forward doesn’t it? It isn’t. Dawn’s twin brother and wife have been through multiple heartaches and unfortunately, the chance of them becoming pregnant are incredibly slim. That’s why Dawn has stepped in, she is being a surrogate for her brother and is pretty close to giving birth to her brother and his wife’s baby.

I must admit, I am in awe of surrogacy; it is such a selfless thing to do and I cannot imagine the amount of inner strength you would need to be able to fulfil the duty at the end. When the circumstances surrounding the new baby go a bit oopsy daisy, I share Dawn’s train of thought and my liking for Rebekah went down a notch.

I was gripped by this book from the very beginning, there was something so warm and enticing about Catherine’s writing of the situation, I felt as though it would be rude of me not to venture into the realm of ‘All That Is Left Of Us’. I felt as though I had got taken on a journey with every chapter being like a little village; opening my eyes to intense situations and beautiful personalities of the characters. Multiple times I was taken aback by the rawness that surfaced in Catherine’s words. To read about how much hurt and anguish one person has faced over the years and kept it under lock and key is one thing, but to read about a child struggling to understand himself, nevermind others, really took my breath away. I sat staring at the pages of the book in complete awe of the strong message that was coming through the words, they left me quite emotional. Well, quite is an understatement if I’m honest.

Usually, to get me quite emotional and less of an ice queen, books need to have something rather damaging happen that can easily be pinpointed afterwards. But this book didn’t, there wasn’t just one set event or situation that I can say ‘well this part had me more emotional than that part’. It caught me off guard. I have never experienced a book to have such a hold on me emotionally, and physically, as ‘All That Is Left Of Us’ did. The book contains multiple poignant and relatable situations that will no doubt have many readers crying because they can see themselves in the story. It also has powerful characters that will show you that it is okay to feel the way that you do with a baby, that it is okay to grieve over heartache, and that it is OKAY to be you…different.

I am actually tearing up writing this review, dafty I know. I just cannot get over how one authors words can create such a powerful, moving, eye opener of a story. When you go to read this book, make sure you’re comfortable and that you have copious amounts of chocolate with you when you begin reading as it will take you on a rollercoaster ride (and even stop at the zoo!).

‘All That Is Left Of You’ is an emotional work of art which emphasises the power behind love and life, as well as celebrating YOU for who YOU are, regardless of what differences you may have. Catherine Miller writes with such feeling and warmth, it is hard not to be drawn into the comfort of her words, knowing you will be safe wherever they may take you.
An extraordinary, memorable read that will open your eyes to devastating, yet life changing moments.
‘All That Is Left Of Us’ is a book that I will never forget because, as of right now, it is all that is left of me.

3.5 🌟 happy publication day 🎉🥳

I found this title a little tricky to get into, while I had huge admiration for what seemed like a selfless deed in being a surrogate for her brother and his wife, I found Dawn hard to like, I found her to be judgmental and a bit harsh on Rebecca who is struggling with becoming a mum. However, I was continually checking myself and trying to relate to Dawn’s feelings. Yet, I just couldn’t. While I appreciated the complexities that the author was highlighting in surrogacy, and the human feelings that come along with that. It just missed the mark for me, somehow.

I did love Archie though, and when Dawn met zookeeper Joel the story started to take a turn that better captured my interest and the way the whole family eventually bonded was uplifting, hence bumping up half a star.

The narration was really nice in this title.

Massive thanks to Bolinda Audio via NetGalley for the opportunity to review this ALC 🎧

And all is left of us we meet Dawn mum to Archie. Dawn is a single mum of a young autistic boy. She is currently pregnant with her sister-in-law‘s child. Becoming a surrogate for her twin brother was a decision she made to help him and his wife become parents.
We meet Dawn shortly before she gives birth and while joining Rebecca at a pregnancy class she meets a face from the past. She has never told anyone who her son Archie‘s dad is could the truth be about to come out.?

Shortly after giving birth, Dawn realises that Rebecca is struggling with becoming a new mum she is scared of how she may feel towards the baby that she has given away despite knowing he is not hers. She finds it within herself to help Rebecca and David bond with their new baby.
All the wild dealing with her son who’s maturity and strength keeps her surprised.

I enjoyed listening to this book. I felt the characters were well written and the storyline interesting and kept me engaged the side characters worked well bringing the story together to an interesting read and conclusion. This is my first book from this author but I am interested in finding more. Thanks to Netgalley the opportunity to listen to this title.

A wonderfully written emotional tale.

This is my second book by Catherine Miller and it was another fabulously emotional story. The author has a wonderful knack of telling a story that gets the reader immediately involved and then creating an emotional pull; whether it be for joy, or sorrow, or grief, or surprise, or fear, or anger or love. Dawn is a single mother who became a mother at seventeen and has faced many challenges in the raising of her special son Archie. I loved the character development of all of the central characters in this book and how the story tackled so many emotional journeys with compassion and care. This is a very easy and quick read but be prepared with a tissue and a smile.

I received an electronic copy of this book for free from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. This was a delightful, quick read. I greatly enjoyed reading about the bond between Dawn and Archie. It was very genuine and real. The book was a little predictable but that's not necessary a bad thing. It was a very sweet, touching story. I would recommend this book to anyone in the mood for a sweet, chic-lit book.

This is a story about family. Dawn is the mother to 10 year old Archie. When Dawn's twin brother and his wife are having trouble starting a family of their own, Dawn becomes their surrogate. The family struggles with having a new born baby and Dawn helps her brother and wife in any way she can. She is a giver and loses herself in the process. It is a wonderful story of what you will do for family. Thank you very much to NetGalley and Carina for allowing me to read and review this book.

Having read Waiting for You by Catherine Miller, which I thoroughly enjoyed, I anticipated a little more from this. It saddens me to write reviews that are now completely glowing. However, I have to be honest.

I did find the outine of this story absolutely appealing, and it was definitely endearing how the characters were all portrayed. I appreciate that the subject matters are both quite deep in themselves when dealing with surrogacy and autism then add in family dynamics to the mix, so maybe this is why the author did tread a little more lightly.

For me it just felt a little flat albeit I listened from beginning to end and there was as I stated something really endearing and warm about this story at the same time there was something missing so I guess I felt a little conflicted with this review.

It wouldn't put me off listening to more by this author in the future it was well narrated, and I definitely enjoyed the listen from this perspective.

With thanks to Netgalley & Bolinda Audio for this ELC in return for an honest review. Best wishes for publication on 1st March 📚❤️🎧

🎧3.5-3.75⭐️

My first book by this author with this contemporary general fiction. I had the audiobook read by Jessica Preddy who does a good job.

Dawn loves being a mother so much, so when her twin brother David and his wife Rebekah are struggling to conceive she agrees to be a surrogate.

It’s a pleasant, at times moving story of family and friend dynamics. The characters of Dawn and Archie (who is neurodivergent) are well developed being relatable and likeable. The subjects of surrogacy and autism are well handled and felt authentic. There’s a dollop of romance too giving some feels. I enjoyed the information about meerkats too.

The pace is slower as in most of this type of fiction. I enjoyed it rather than loved it. It’s an enjoyable easy listen.

I had this book for free

An endearing , well-written book covering a range of sensitive issues - autism, surrogacy, post-partum depression and family secrets.
The author builds a cast of characters you become instantly invested in and takes you on an emotional roller-coaster as each of them deals with a range of challenges.
A slightly predictable ending but not one that spoilt my enjoyment of the book.
I am grateful to NetGalley and the publishers for an advanced listener copy of this very well narrated audiobook which added to the overall enjoyment.

As an autistic adult, I always get “the ick” very quickly when there’s a little boy in a book who is “different” or “needs routine” (read classic little boy with autism). Even though it was never explicitly mentioned in this book (except for in the acknowledgments), I feel that’s what Miller was maybe trying to get at with Archie HOWEVER it was nice to see the portrayal of Archie as not the typical one of autistic boys in books - definitely didn’t feel gross to me, and I loved that Dawn didn’t ever “defend” or explain him to anyone.

I'm sorry to say this book wasn't for me. I didn't find the characters particularly compelling and I really struggled to connect with them and the broader story. I hope that others enjoy it, perhaps it just wasn't quite what I was looking for. I was provided with an audio ARC by the publisher, and I think the narrator did a good job, so I had no issues there. Fingers crossed I have better luck with my next read!

What an uplifting story! A book about "paying it forward", Love, Determination and Hope.
Archie is 10 and his Mom (Dawn) have always just had each other.
Dawn wants to give her brother and sister in law the baby they can't have and becomes a surrogate. That is done, but not without problems for all.
Archie who is a smart, sensitive child with more insight on life than many others, has a dedicated love for zoo animals and they visit the zoo each week. They find a new love and life within the zoo.
Only through Archie, will his Mom be able to move forward and realize how important she is and how to accept happiness in her life, including love for one special man.
A great read!

Review
Dawn is a very selfless person, who seems to be all things to all people and just wants to make everyone else happy. Her son Archie is her world, everything she does, she does with him in mind and how it will effect him. Archie is autistic and loves going to the zoo, where he spends hours cataloguing the exploits of the meerkats. This book was quite heart warming, Archie and Dawn had a fixed routine that never really changed until she became a surrogate for her brother David and his wife Rebekah. Dawn thinks that life will return to normal once the baby is born. But things are changed forever when Rebekah suffers post natal depression and Dawn and Archie meet Joel, the new keeper of the meerkats.

This story was not the simple one I was expecting it to be. It had twists and surprises I never saw coming - just as I thought I knew where things were headed, the story led me in an entirely differant direction. Emotionally too, it was really quite complex - and all the complications were really well handled, with an amazing authenticity to the way people behave and react. The dialogue throughout is really excellent. I thought the author created some interesting characters and showed real depth to their personalities.

A beautiful book jam packed with emotions.

From the very first chapter you are hit with so much emotion. We meet Dawn a surrogate for her twin brother & sister in law.

Dawn is struggling at the end stages of the pregnancy, she has been getting so attached to the unborn baby and is dreading the birth and hangover. As a reading you can feel the pain that she is going threw and the great sadness she is feeling. Then she gives birth and finds unexpectedly her sister in law Rebekah is struggling with becoming a new mum with carrying so much grief from her previous miscarriages and realising shes a healthy baby boy Harry.

We see Dawn face her fear of being close to baby harry sooner than she expected and be strong and be there for her brother and Rebekah and help them get threw this hard time which should of been the happiest time of their lives.

I really enjoyed reading this and the characters were just perfect you end up feeling like youve known them forever.

I just cried the whole way threw this and my heart goes to out to Dawn. Such an inspiration to us all. A fabulous strong woman that's been threw it all.

I think from this book you can see that no matter how hard life is or the challenges and struggles you go threw that there will be happy ending for us all.

A very well deserved 5 out of 5 stars for this stunning second novel from Catherine Miller.

I loved her first book, Waiting for You, and Catherine has smashed aside that 'difficult second book' syndrome.

The author's love of being a mother shines through in her writing. Actually that sounds a bit lame - absolute love, devotion and selflessness is more like it.

Surrogacy is probably one of the most amazing things a woman can do for someone else; to carry a baby to full term and then hand that baby over must be heartbreaking. Catherine writes with raw emotion, without falling into the trap of being of being twee or overly dramatic, creating a strong main character in Dawn.

The character of Archie is wonderfully written with sensitivity and empathy, giving us a great insight to someone who is slightly 'different'. His relationship with Joel is beautiful; everything about this book is beautiful!

Even Rebekah's behaviour in the story is wholly believable; even if I did want to shake her. But the emotions felt by everyone involved in the story are true and captured here with great skill, drawing the reader into the lives of Dawn and her family.

Thank you Catherine, for a truly mesmerising read.
