Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ½
Genre: Horror

What happens when your sins start haunting you? What will you do? How will you react to all the sins you have committed? This is the main concept behind Kurtain Hotel, the first book in The Sin series. An author, a priest, an actress, a jock, a mysterious woman, and her thirteen-year-old boy. They along with others spend the night in this creepy motel. Will they be able to survive the night and its horror?

Horror in motels is one of the tropes I really enjoy in both literature and films. Kurtain Motel has a very creepy atmosphere and deserves to be turned into a feature film. The spooky feel of it reminds me of movies like Identity and Vacancy. It has the same creepy feel to it but the concept of sins haunting the sin committers is a unique element about it. There are many characters and need some focus in the beginning but once you get familiar with them you will be able to dive into the story more easily.

“The sins, everyone has them, and they hang about a person like an ugly black cloud. You don’t see them, nobody does, but you can feel them. The guilt, the fear, the what ifs. The rule you, push you in directions you would have otherwise never thought of taking. They dig their way deep into your soul until they become a part of you that you can never rid yourself of.”

This was such an amazing story. I honestly was not expecting to like it that much. It surprised me. The author has given us multi-layered characters. They all have different personalities and this is a noteworthy achievement considering the length of the story. Yes, there are multiple perspectives and I am not a fan of them in usual but I feel they were highly necessary for this story. The multiple POVs did not feel convoluted which was a great thing. The main trope and the atmosphere were the first things to win me over and the remaining pros of the book consolidated that. Highly recommended.

They say that "confession is good for the soul" and after reading this book, that is the main theme here. The Kurtain Motel draws strangers into its walls and wraps its horror around all who enter making the strangers face their past bad deeds. It is where everyone who dares to enter the motel has to go through a "confession" process. It grabbed me from the get-go and took me into a spiral of horror. I will be looking forward to reading the rest of this series to see what kind of ride the author has in store for us readers. Four stars on this one.

“I know you hear voices, that your dreams are disturbed, that you’re plagued by your sins,” [He] replied. “It’s the same with everyone else here. It’s the reason why all this is happening.”

Kurtain Motel is the first novella in The Sin trilogy series. It has Twilight Zone paranormal vibes and a creepy motel horror atmosphere. Unfortunately, it does end in a cliff hanger.

At an isolated rundown motel, late at night, with a raging storm ongoing, there is a small group of people sheltering in place. Varied reasons have brought them here – one had car trouble, others are waiting, or hiding, or working there. As the night continues, it becomes apparent that time has stopped, as if the night is endless. They begin experiencing disturbances – bad dreams, hallucinations – that seem all too physical and terrifying. Some try to leave and can’t, others hope for daylight that never seems to come. How can one survive when it’s their own sins that plague them?

This story nailed the motel horror trope. It’s as eerie and isolated as the book’s cover suggests. Everything here is weird from the weather (raging storm to dry to cold) to the isolation (no cell coverage, electricity, or working vehicles), to a strange young boy accompanied by his mother.

Characters were introduced in quick short chapters – a large cast of them. I didn’t worry about keeping up with the names because I could easily identify them by their circumstances. The point of view shifts to give the reader insight into every person's thought.

The first half of the book was reminiscent of the beloved television show I watched as a kid that I would guess most people are familiar with, the Twilight Zone. The reader learns the sins of the characters and how the Kurtain Motel is affecting them individually. It reeks of foreboding that you know isn’t going to end well. The voices kept urging these tormented people to “Confess!”

Whatever was happening at the Kurtain Motel, it wasn’t going to leave anyone out.

It was suspense and curiosity that kept me turning just one more page. I couldn’t wait to find out what was driving this evil. The pacing is steady throughout the book with a nail-biting climax.

Like I said, unfortunately, it does end in a cliff hanger. I do wish that I weren’t left with unanswered questions by the end. I expect the general plot of the book to finish. It’s okay to dangle savory details at me so I can’t wait to start the next in the series. However, leaving me hanging like it did make me think the book felt unfinished in a way. If the novella had been a little longer, the psychology of the characters could be explored more too. Nevertheless, it did have the perfect Halloween vibe that I was looking for.

Even though I am a horror fan, I get scared easily. I mention this to help other potential readers gauge if this is more than they may be comfortable reading. Image descriptions are what I’d call gross or macabre. I would label this as moderate on the horror scale – it’s something I can read but it’s not something I could watch on screen.

Disregarding the cliff hanger, I am rating this one for having the atmosphere and lurking evil one would expect from the horror genre.

Review: KURTAIN MOTEL by A. J. Nasser

I enjoyed this story enormously! As I progressed further and further into it, the more I admired it, and couldn't wait to read Books 2 and 3. The author has a talent for interspersing horror and a metaphysical theme. Additionally, he knows how to wreak emotional havoc in his characters (and elicit readers' empathy. Some of these characters really tug our heartstrings, others inspire admiration for their courage and integrity). But everybody's ending isn't happy.

To be brutally honest, I did not find this the least bit edgy or gory or suspenseful or much of anything else. I did find it to be repetitive, confusing because of the number of people either getting murdered, already dead but just not quite sure if that's the case, about to be murdered for no apparent reason or at least none that were either mentioned or concluded in the end....the only real common theme other than all the death, was the spiders. Truth be told even that got a little redundant.

This is a 4.5 star read.

Okay ...... this was a corker of a read that I totally didn't expect! Eerie with a side serve of malevolence, it started off causing a mild case of flutterby's in the tummy, stopped off for a rest break at WTF and ended in a crashing crescendo of sodden fear. Simply put, this was an awesome tale!

As far as setting is concerned you know nothing good ever eventuates from a run down motel in the middle of nowhere, and the lashing rain was a character in itself. While I was reading I could imagine the type of downpour that is unrelenting and noisy - for some reason it reminded me of the movie Seven.

CONFESS!!

Something none of the characters seemed to want to do - I was thinking while I was reading "god, just do it!" but apparently that would have been a very bad idea. There was not a whole lot of redemption in any of the characters, even the main protagonist was soaked in "sin", yet the author had you feeling for most of them even with all their secrets.

Not only a horror story, this novel dipped decisively into the paranormal side with the characters Tara and Jimmy providing a guiding hand to some of the motel's guests. The author did an amazing job of just giving us a peek of what they were privy to - enough to let the reader draw their own conclusions but still hiding all the mysteries behind a veil.

The anxiety driven conclusion had you fervently turning the pages to see what would happen next and who would survive. All I know is that the story and characters were so enticing that I have put the next two books of the trilogy on my To Read List. Excellent horror read steeped in the metaphysical.

“Confess!”

As always my reviews are based off of my true and honest opinion and I do my best to keep all reviews spoiler free.

After his car runs out of gas. Patrick is picked up by a priest and they decide to stay the night at a near by motel called Kurtain Motel. Its a motel that is basically in the middle of nowhere and have only a handful of others staying. Not long after checking in Patrick and the others start having nightmares about there greatest guilt. That then turn into waking nightmares. After that Patrick starts to suspect that things might not be nightmares at all, and what ever it is, wants there confession.

description

Honestly I'm not too impressed with this one at all. Its a very confusing beginning due to all the different points of view. The middle was a little less confusing but it fell flat for me. It never held my attention and took me far to long to read for a short book. The ending was so dissapointing. Not only did it happen so quick that I had to reread the last two chapters cause I missed it, but it didn't explain anything that happened. There was no explanation as to what it was and what it wanted other then a very vague one in the middle of the story that told almost nothing. I can see what the author was trying to go for with this book, but just didn't make it.

What would you do if you stopped for the night at a motel and couldn't leave? What if you kept hearing a voice telling you to confess while you were at the motel? This story was creepy and would make a great horror movie. Every time Patrick falls asleep he dreams of millions of spiders crawling out of everyone and everything around him and crawling on him. That would be enough to make me lose my mind....hate spiders. Even when you know something is wrong, how can you protect yourself from the unknown and the people around you it drives to madness????

I'm looking forward to reading the other stories in this series and hope they are as good as this one.

Cool concept and engaging but something kept me from being really invested in the story and characters. But a good shorter read.

"Whatever was happening at Kurtain Motel, it wasn't going to leave anyone out."

The weird motel during a storm makes the perfect setting. All the guests are haunted by secrets from their past to finally confess. And this night is endless...

The creepy atmosphere hit me instantly as there ist not just horror but also something paranormal going on. For such a short read this was really good.

There is actually no "to much" in these kind of reads but but this story took turns that I would have liked differently.

But definitely recommendable!

"The sins ... Everyone hs them, and they hang about a person like an ugly black cloud. You don't see them, nobody does, but you can feel them. ... They dig their way deep into your soul until they become a part of you that you can never rid yourself of."

This wasn't bad. I think it was a good premise, it's just too many characters and the writing needed to be a bit refined... in my opinion 😂

Patrick Lahm is on his way to a book signing when he has some car trouble. Through the storm he makes out lights coming towards him. A priest pulls up and Patrick gets a lift to the nearest town, but the storm is worsening and they decide to stop at the Kurtain Motel for the night. This turns out to be a massive mistake and the night seems never ending.

So I quite enjoyed this. While there are a few minor issues, overall it was thoroughly enjoyable. Plot wise, I was intrigued and interested in the whole plot. The setting of the motel was perfect because a creepy motel in a storm will always give you shivers!! Then we have the whole "confess" bit! That was initially confusing but once the story got going I was able to figure somethings out. I also loved the fact that everyone seems to have their own secrets.

One problem for me was the sheer number of characters. I found myself a little lost on who was talking at any given time, but it did eventually click for me and I was able to distinguish each one and kinda figure out what their secrets were. I really liked Patrick and am intrigued to find out what his secret is ;)

The minor issues for me were the fact that some of the characters weren't as developed as I would have liked. Also, when the boy came into the story, I thought, from the description, that he was really young, but near the end we find out his age. It just didn't add up! But as I said, these are minor issues and didn't detract from the creepiness of the story!!

Thom Bowers does a great job of capturing the atmosphere and bringing the book alive, I just found that he didn't differentiate some of the male characters enough. It took me a while to figure out which character was which. But he does read this well and is clear and concise, so in all, I did enjoy his performance.

I was voluntarily provided this audiobook for free from the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

I am not totally sure what my final opinion is of this book. I enjoyed the story; I wished it was longer so I could see some of the characters better developed as well as see the story unfold at a slower pace. I realized I had more questions than answers when the book ended, which is definitely how to hook someone into the Sin Series.
Patrick Lahm is having a tough go of things, running out of gas on the side of the road he hitches a ride with a priest to what he hopes is the nearest gas station. Unfortunately, the weather takes a turn for the worse forcing the pair to check into the remote, rundown Kurtain Motel.
The motel is not deserted though; due to the storm the motel has the most guests it has seen in a long time. As the night unfolds the story narration switches between characters, the story moves between each character’s past and present. All characters relieve their sins while someone demands they “Confess”.
At times it was a struggle moving so quickly between events and characters trying to keep everyone’s story straight. I confess I lost track of a character or two. I wanted to learn a little more about Patrick. It would have been nice to see the story longer, this would have made it easier to move between narrators and watch the story unfold with a little more detail.
Kurtain Motel is a quick and gripping read, plot twists within the story can keep the reader guessing throughout the book. This story is not for those who have fear of spiders, blood or learning someone’s darkest secrets.

Kurtain Motel (The Sin Series Book 1)🍒🍒🍒🍒
By A. I. Nassar
2016

"Confess"

When author Patrick Lahm finds himself stranded when his car breaks down in a rainstorm, and accepts a ride from a priest, he had no idea this would end up being one of the longest nights of his life.
Diana Bren, a B-Movie Queen...Cameron, a baseball celebrity banned from the league for drug abuse...Tara Fey and her young son, Jimmy stranded when their taxi never shows up.....are smong the guests, all find themselves in some way, stuck at the Motel for the night.

Something just feels wrong about this place, and soon the evil that lurks within the walls of this creepy Motel begins reaching into the deepest, darkest corners of their minds, to the root of their souls and confess their sins. It chases down their souls, possesses their bodies and senses....it reminds them you can never out run your sins....

This was really creepy, it felt the eeriness and darkness....excellent start to Sin Series...
Loved this horror story! Perfect for a rainy night.....

Ooohh this was good, very good.
I love a good spooky story and this one is definitely that.
I didn't gel with all the characters, I think their story arcs could have been fleshed out further, but on the whole this was a great read for spooky season and I'm looking forward to the next installment which hopefully answers my lingering questions.

I almost dnf this one. Id give it 2.5 stars. Too many characters and hardly any development. The beginning is promising with a guy having no choice but to stay at a run-down hotel because his car broke down a bit up the road.
It went downhill from there.
I do not recommend this book.

Well, aside from the typical bad editing where there are missing words and extra ones, it just didn’t grab me. I should have finished this one quickly but I didn’t. I get it that it’s a series but there just wasn’t enough explained to make me want to keep going. The ending just kind of came out of nowhere and didn’t really make sense. Why can they leave all of a sudden? No, this one just fell flat for me.

This book is “almost” good. It had the potential to be a great novel. The characters are relatable and engaging. The writing style is quick and comprehensible. However, the story lacked any true horror. The author toyed at the edge of terror and always backed off, in an underwhelming sort of way. I almost got the impression that he was afraid to go too far and his hesitation resulted in a book that fell very short of its true potential. The overall idea and plot of the novel is quite good and in more experienced and adventurous hands this could have been great. I initially thought this was a new author, finding their voice. As I said, I truly saw a great idea in these pages, however, I was disappointed to learn this author has published heavily and this was not a first piece. The story and characters did grab my attention, but at the conclusion of each scene I asked myself “That’s it?!?” I would really encourage this author to push past his comfort zone and dive deep into his characters and plot. With the right editor and constructive criticism, this could have been a really great novel.

Aside from lack of development, there were also some severe editorial errors throughout. Grammar problems, incorrect factual information (geographical distances especially), and plot inconsistencies were noticeable throughout the book. The author also repeated words often such as “suddenly”. I find that makes writing choppy. I have definitely seen worse, but regardless it was no less distracting and irritating.

Overall, I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed 🤷🏻‍♀️

Intriguing at first, but felt rushed in the end.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but it started out intriguing enough plot and everything. However, it had some pacing issues for the book to properly work. Also, some "mysteries" were either obvious or revealed too quickly before any suspense was built up. Suspense was just not really a part of the book for me.

The part of the book that makes it horror-ish didn't completely work for me. It was explained explicitly in the end as if the book was rushing. It also didn't visualise properly for me. I basically think it would have worked better as a visual media, not a book, as it doesn't take advantage of how books build suspense and horror. The descriptions were too reliant on visual cues.

All in all, it felt lacking but I could see potential for it as a visual media instead.

The concept was what drew me to read this book. As I read it I had mixed feelings. It reminded me A LOT of the movie Identity (a bunch of strangers end up at a motel, it rains constantly, they can't leave and people start dying), which was a good and a bad thing. The hook here was different and some of the back stories were interesting when they first unfolded but I felt there were gaps. We were told just enough of Cameron's story but I felt there was something more. Connor - never get his story. Jason - we sort of get his story but it is so quick. And that's one issue. There are too many people all at once, so was difficult to keep up at first. Also, what was the point of the prologue? That character never appears anywhere else, never mentioned again (at least in book 2 the prologue character becomes a main character).

Still a good read but you'll have to read books 2 and 3.

I'll be perfectly honest here, the only reason I read this book was because it was of a genre that I
enjoy and it was a title that was Free for me kindle!!

That said, I really enjoyed it. It's the first in a trilogy called SINS by author A I Nasser and, though
it's not an author I'd heard of before it's definitely one I'd look to read more of which will begin next with part two in his SINS trilogy 'The Refuge' though the whole trilogy is available on kindle for 99p

If supernatural horror is your thing you really do have to check out this author's work.
