Void Wraith #3

Eradication

Rate this book
The Eradication Has Begun The Eradication has finally begun, and there is little hope of victory. Mankind's fleets are devastated. Their Tigris allies have lost their homeworld, and only a few Primo survive. They need allies, but few are left to be had. Fizgig sets out to persuade the notoriously hostile Jaguara Pride to join the war. Dryker fights a running retreat, losing on every front while the Eye pushes slowly toward Earth. Their only hope is Captain Nolan, leading his squad in a quest to find the legendary Birthplace. There, if ancient Primo myths are right, they will find the vessel known as the Forge. But they are not the only ones seeking it, and if the Void Wraith get there first then all hope is gone.

By day I am an iPhone developer architecting the app used to scope Stephen Colbert’s ear. By night I am Batman. Ok maybe not. One can dream though, right?

I’ve been writing since I was six years old and started inflicting my work on others at age 18. By age 24 people stopped running away when I approached them with a new story and shortly thereafter I published my first one in the Rifter.

Wait you’re still reading?

Ok, the facts I’m supposed to list in a bio. As of this writing I’m 38 years old and live just north of the Golden Gate Bridge in the beautiful town of Mill Valley. If you’re unsure how to find it just follow the smell of self-entitlement. Once you see the teens driving Teslas you’ll know you’re in the right place.

I live in a tiny studio that I can cross in (literally) five steps and don’t own an oven. But you know what? It’s worth it. I love developing iPhone apps and if you want to work in San Francisco you accept that rent for a tiny place costs more than most people’s mortgage.

If you and about 2 million other people start buying my books I promise to move out of Marin to a house in the redwoods up in Guerneville. No pressure. Wait that’s a lie. Pressure.

A great finish

What a great series of books. We see that finally Nolan and his team find the Forge and a way to rescue Kathleen. It is her contact with the enemy that gives them a way to end the war. I will look forward to reading more soon.

The end of the Void Wraith trilogy. Sure, the story itself continues but the trilogy is done, the enemy is beaten back and all our heroes get to take a brief break. So, how did it stack up?

Unfortunately, not very well. The quality of the story has slowly diminished for each installment and a part of that, I think based solely of my own impressions, is that there was never a set plan for how things should go. How things should progress from book to book. Some sections just seem to contradict each other and there's a lot of things set up that don't really go anywhere.
The plot moves at a ridiculous pace, jumping from point to point and never really settling on a single event. There's a heist partway into the book which should be a significant thing but is ran through so quickly it's kind of jarring. It's set up as a huge challenge but... nothing really comes of it, it's breezed through in a few short chapters and then they're off again, like a never ending fetch quest.
A bloated cast doesn't really help here either, I never quite figured out the point of the Jaguara at all, it literally just padded the page number. Their impact on the story and the final battle is minimal and as a character, only Carnifex was given any sort of importance and of him I only remember that he was a douche. Again, if this had been leading up to a point where characters had to start giving their lives to win, that would've been fine. I've lived with some of these characters for three books, reading them dying would've been sad. But only two or three make the ultimate sacrifice here and one of them is undone by the end.
Compared to the first book, where multiple people give their lives in the line of duty, my only guess is that the author became attached to his characters and wasn't willing to end them. So instead they're clad in the thickest plot armor you can imagine, taking away any and all worry about their safety.

I also thought the ending was complete bullshit. To say that their victory was costly is putting it mildly and ending on a sequel hook of "We're going to fight another war" is ridiculous since it would take all three gathered races a lot of years to build themselves back to where they were. Homeworlds had been razed, granary worlds burnt and billions of people, from all three races, dead. I also think that .

Can't say I was entirely pleased with this. It took me much longer to read than previous entries in the trilogy and the only reason I'm giving it a three out of five is because the ending was mildly exhilarating. And even then I thought the ending was full of dumb shit.

As with the 2nd volume, the 3rd starts with a ridiculously funny ‘Previously on Void Wraith…’ run down for the previous stories. Even if you have just read these books, you should really read this anyway as it is a serious laugh, has some extra goodies and ties things together nicely before you leap into the next episode. This little snippet at the front of the book is extremely clever, not just in that the way it is written is so funny you will have to stop several times to collect yourself before moving on, but because as Fox says, sometimes you really are stuck about whether you should go back and read the series again before picking up the next book, and this is really great if you don’t have the time.
The 3rd in the Void Wraith trilogy sees the three major races suffering severely as the Masters and the Void Wraith continue to try and destroy them.
Nolan and his battered crew continue to fight to bring down the Masters, and they now have a plan, they have to find the forge, an ancient weapon that was created by the initial race of the Primos, as the forge is the only thing that will be able to stop the great eye (And the descriptions of this thing are hideous, it really does need to be destroyed!).
Whilst Nolan and his collected rag tag crew go off to find the weapon, Fizgig is off trying to find the Jaguara, an offshoot of the Tigris, who are somewhat more temperamental than the Tigris, but maybe not as smart or for the most part, not as big, but they do make up for this in speed and agility. The Tigris and the Jaguara are not
Dryker in the meantime is trying to save the Primos and bring together what ships he can to defend various strategic locations.
This is a book of desperation, finality, where each of our heroes is doing all they can to just survive, to try and save their races and the future of the galaxy. Fox does an absolutely brilliant job in writing the characters and their sheer determination to win at any cost, with characters making different sacrifices to reach these goals, and some of them making the ultimate sacrifice.
This is a story that has been done before, there is no argument there, a superpower with seemingly unstoppable weapons, a lesser power trying to stop them, their only hope some miracle. But it is how it is written that makes all the difference, the characters, the dialogue, the incredible battle scenes.
Each of these are not just present, but all fit together to make such an exceptional and outstanding tale.
This is a truly epic story and in this part Fox finally brings it all together and it shouldn’t be missed by anyone that is a real fan of his reading, or of Military Sci-Fi.

The stage is set. The Gorthian Eye is set to harvest the population of Earth.

Half of the command structure of the Primo and Humans are wearing larvae, slaves to the Eye. Half of the combined fleet are in Harvesters. Half of the Tigris fighters have taken Judicator and Alpha bodies enabling them to be faster, better shielded and armed. More than half of my brain is agonized, knowing that the Eye can take command of the Harvester ships and the Alpha and Judicator bodies, leaving those inside helpless to do more than watch as they wantonly attack their friends and fellow fighters. Dryker, Celendra, Nolan, Kathryn, Mendez and several more of the command structure is compromised by Gorthian Larvae. The end is inevitable: the billions of lives in this section of the Milky Way will be harvested and turned into fighters to aid the Eye in its conquests, or consumed by the Eye as biomass for its own evolution. Things are certainly looking dismal for our heroes.

I've already expressed my admiration for the main characters in this series: Human, Tigris and Primo alike. Even after fighting like cats and, you know, even after the conflicts and betrayals, the fleets and fighters can come together and jointly oppose the Gorthians. I love these characters! I'm a bit partial to the Tigris. I'm kinda a cat person myself. Love my kitties!

This book is almost pure combat or preparations for war. The combat sequences are amazing! Fast and furious, the actions of the characters and the battles are bloody, brutal and better than many I've read before. My mind keeps going to producers and directors and what outstanding battle sequences could blister the screens! Once again the amazing storyline, outstanding characters and a master storyteller combine to present a package to intrigue and amaze me. This series is a great read! Getcha some!

Loved all three!

I've read the entire trilogy and loved them all. I started it because I wanted to know more about Nolan and his squad and because his book " Hold the Line " hadn't been released yet.Nolan is a great leader and his squad of misfits are perfect. Lana is a great combo of scholar/guardian of knowledge, whether it came from people or their form of a book. In short I couldn't put any of the books down. Fizgig and Izzy were great, but my favorite cat-person was Khar,he always landed on his feet.
If you like a good action sci-fi that keeps you reading this is a trilogy I recommend.

An excellent ending leading to the next book. I won't say to much about the events in the book, but every character continues to grow as the story progresses and they find themselves and their place in the ever evolving threat and story. Another great book in a great series.
I do want to add that while there is no doubt that this is a series written with a backdrop of war and the military, it is so much more than that backdrop. The characters seem real as if in some other alternate dimension they could truly exist and be battling for their lives and those of their galaxy.

Whole trilogy in two days. . .

I am a SLOW reader but this "Void Wraith" trilogy is so fast paced and was so much fun to read I finished all three books plus the novella in a little under 24 hours. Is isn't about how fast I read. It's about how readable "Void Wraith" is. It's an excellent series and anyone who enjoys reading sci-fi will love this story. Actually, I wouldn't mind another in this excellent set of books!

Extermination void wraith series

So i bought this in a box set and bought the book seperate on accident, but overall the plot and characters are well done, with a few errors throughout. This book was exciting and a little predictable, but a fun read and i look for a ard to the next book.

it's a fine book if you can look past the fact everyone gets 20 times dumber in the last third of the book.

if I never read the words "organ" it will be too soon. especially when it's used so poorly.

End of the trilogy

Nolan continues the battle against the Void Wraith and things are getting hairy. Fortunately, they've got a possible way out of this jam but only with incredible luck will they succeed. Seems like Nolan's middle name should be Lucky...

The story was fairly decent. However, I am giving this 5 stars mostly for the prologue/recap given by the author at the beginning in which he practices a lot of self-awareness, sees things from the reader's perspective, and makes the reader laugh all the way through.

Before going further, please read either my review of "Dark Horse", a good story by Diener or Powers of the Earth (a silly book) and the comments of Claes Rees, Jr/cgr710 (a self-identified NeoNazi). If you did not find the behavior of Amazon/Goodreads to be disgusting, disturbing or shocking, you are the probably reading the wrong review.

GLORY TO UKRAINE !!!!

Michael Keller wrote a a long detailed review, which I think is worth a read. I was dissatisfied with the book for the same reasons that he loved it. The book did not have fully fleshed characters. In their place is battle after battle. The plot is weirdly lacking. On the other hand, there is battle prep and battle.

The dialogue does not provide insight into the characters but it does explain the battle prep followed by battles. No three dimensional characters, no normal conversation, no purpose to the action beyond setting up another battle and no point to the book.

If you are interested in non-stop space battles, then it will entertain. If you are interested in a story with characters and a plot that is more than a campaign map, then you might not. I was not thrilled by the book.

I am losing my interest in science fiction, like this. When I am in the mood for it, I reread the writers whose work always entertains. Most of the time, I watch Netflix or other services for science fiction. Netflix has the largest selection but also many non-english titles which is a treat.

I discovered Curiosity Stream/Nebula from YouTube creators. At $15 USD for a yearly subscription, it made the purchase a great bargain.

For a community of readers that was welcoming, I turned to book tubes. I use YouTube for my other interests also. Some favorite channels are.

This military science fiction book and the whole series would make an absolutely terrific Class B sci-fi movie! I can see it now on Mystery Science Theatre 3000, “The Eye That Ate China!” or something like that. Unfortunately, their only books right now and to their credit, they are pretty darn good books.

Last time we left the series, the combined galactic races, that we know of, had just stopped fighting each other and were getting close to talking about who was the real enemy. Admiral Dryker was in-charge of the human and Primo forces, which were greatly reduced after the last fighting. Mighty Fizgig, the Tigris, was commanding her Pride which included most, but not all of the remaining Tigris. They had agreed to stop fighting each other and start talking about the Void Wrath and how to defeat them, if possible. Just getting these three factions to talk to each other was a miracle in itself.

At the same time, Commander Nolan, was sent on a mission to find the Forge, a massively powerful ship that was believed capable of destroying the Void Wrath with each and even had a chance to destroy the Void Wrath’s master, the evil and unimaginably ugly Eye! Yeah, our arch villain is a giant eyeball with tentacles hanging out it’s back side to make it even more vile and repulsive. And, no only that, but it has infected numerous high ranking military and political leaders of all three races. Those infected by a larva, were used as host while the larva grew to a new young eye! So far, Admiral Dryker, Commander Nolan, and Fizgig have not been infected, but they all expect it will be only a matter of time before someone tries. So, while they go about their individual missions, they also have to worry about someone dropping a wriggling, squirmy larva on them! Ugh, is right!

Ok, so once you get past the fact that our enemy is pretty stupid, then you can stay attuned to the rest of the book. Commander Nolan has the most daunting mission of all in that he must find this mysterious alien ship that could be anywhere. Not much is known about it and what is known is ancient history. History books and such are usually kept in libraries so his first idea is to start finding and searching all the ancient Primo libraries. That’s a good idea except the Void Wrath also know this and they are destroying all Primo libraries they can find as fast as possible. Still, Commander Nolan has to come through or he won’t be the book’s hero, so how can he fail?

I liked the story even with the evil Eye. That’s pretty comical. Even turning in humans to a young eye is pretty funny. I don’t know why, but none of the other races seem to get that far. The Tigris are kind of like cats with fur and everything, so if they turned into an eye, I wonder if they’d be fuzzy eyeballs? Also, how can this giant Eye figure out where it’s going if it doesn’t open its eyelid except to feed? Must be kind of tough bumping into planets and stuff! Ok, I know I’m making fun of the story, but good night, the author used his two cats as main characters in the book, Fizgig and Izzy, so I’m allowed to make this review a little humorous, right?

Good reading, but a trilogy is three books and this is the third. I wonder what will come next? Anything?

Great end to a great trilogy

This is the third volume opinion the Void Wraith trilogy (should not be read as a stand alone). While I thought the second volume lost some of the power from the first entry, it all came back...and then some..in this final volume. It is impossible to write a review which discusses the plot of the third volume of this series without including major spoilers for those who haven't read the first two volumes--so I won't include any specifics about the plot in this review.

The problem Fox sets for his character is how can they defeat a powerful enemy, with advanced military technology, which has gained control of about 1/3 of what is supposed to be "their" army and ships? That is what faces Captain Nolan and his human allies in this volume. The answer, of course, is hardly unique: find trusted allies and locate the "holy grail"-or its science fiction high tech equivalent. In this sense, there is nothing unique about Fox's story. It is all in the telling.

Fox creates a series of interesting characters, creates interesting, and credible, technology, and tens of thousands of years of backstory to explain how the Milky Way evolved as it did. Fox keeps the tension up by interspersing character developing scenes, struggles for political power and relationship building, with well written battle sequences. He regularly describes the same battle from the differing perspectives of different characters in adjacent chapters.

I do note that Fox has left the door open for further books in this series. Not sure if that is a good idea. Sometimes it is better to leave well enough alone. But if Fox writes them, I will read them.

Good non stop action

You want battles? This one has plenty and more. The action is fast paced. The chapters are very short in most cases, cutting from one character to another, kind of like in a movie or tv show. It's a little hard to get used to, but once you do the read is enjoyable. There is enough of a hole left open to continue this story if the author decides to do so but it also has a sense of closure. There are a few errors that editing missed, but they are not all over the place and it did not stop my enjoyment of this book.

Weakest book in the trilogy in my opinion. Neither Book 1 nor Book 2 were very high quality reading, more of a guilty pleasure, but at least Chris Fox has shown a good sense of pacing in those two. That gets lost in this third installment, which manages the rare feat to feel both rushed and like a terrible slog at times.

Not a lot of what was in the books made a lot of sense, but they were at least entertaining and followed an inner logic to a certain extent. The third book does away with that completely and just pushes the story from plot hole to plot hole.

Of course you kind of have to read this book if you read the first two, but at the same time you don't.

Again, this series is basically Mass Effect. So much so, the author even acknowledges it in the forward. It's similar to a lot of military sci-fi out there, so if you like the genre you will probably enjoy the series. The three books in total are fairly short, so not a lot of time investment needed. Pretty generic characters, like most you'd see in military sci-fi books.

A "popcorn" book would probably sum this up.

Again

Again Chris Fox has done it and made something that in unconventional and truly tantalizing. This author is not one to sleep on and this series( along with others) proves this. I had a physical reaction to this book and it seem more like a tv series in the way you could visualize the action, ppl and emotions!

Wow! A lot packed into one book!

This is the third in a trilogy, so you automatically expect a conclusion. Don't be so hasty! There is plenty of action and suspense in this third book to keep you just as fascinated as the first two books did. And there is plenty of story remaining to make me want more!

Great read!

This was an enjoyable ending for this trilogy. Lots of sacrifices were made and history will continue, for some. If you enjoyed the first two books, you owe it to yourself to see this through to the end.
