The Storm Inside

The hardest thing I'd ever done was let go of the one person who needed me most...

Jake Spencer was the kindest, truest, strongest man I'd ever met. He also had the worst childhood I could imagine. All he needed was a chance and someone to love him. I gave him everything I could, but it wasn't enough.

It took me a long time to accept that there was nothing else I could have done. That disappointment has followed me ever since. I built a career and a supportive network of friends, but kept love out of my life.

I was on the rise and thought nothing could slow me down, until my greatest failure came back to haunt me. Jake came home, stronger and wiser. Whatever it was he needed to overcome his past, he'd found it. Somewhere, or with someone, else. I hated that it wasn't with me.

His sudden reappearance has thrown my life into a tailspin. He's back to claim the life he wanted, to be the man he says I deserved, but I'm not the girl I used to be. Professionally I am powerful and moving up. Personally I'm broken and uncertain, but mainly...I'm angry. Falling in love with Jake was the easiest thing I'd ever done, losing him was the hardest, and giving him a second chance might just cost me everything.

Eve and Jake were high school sweethearts. Eve grew up in a wealthy and loving family. Jake did not. He suffered abuse at the hands of his father. He left town the night of their college graduation and was gone for 10 years without a word to anyone. Now he's back and hoping for a second chance with Eve.

Another one of those coulda, shoulda, woulda scenarios that might have scored higher if it hadn't been so annoying -- Eve especially. I couldn't bond with her -- she went cold and hot in seconds. Jake had his reasons for leaving - some of which I could understand. I did think that 10 years is quite a long time to just disappear and then zoom back into town and expect everything to fall back into place without some major groveling. He did grovel - he did try to explain - and he did apologize and worked hard to make it work. Some of it was a bit hard to digest and I'm not sure I really believed it was possible.

Anyway, it was an interesting read. I am planning on reading the next installment.

Was hard to finish

I liked the idea behind the book but had a really hard time getting into the characters. I can understand Eve being angry about Jacob leaving for ten years without hearing anything from him. After knowing the circumstances of Jacob leaving I felt sympathy towards him however I do believe he should have contacted Eve whether it was to continue their relationship or take a break while he figured things out. What bothered me about this book was how often Jacob apologized to Eve for leaving, her accepting the apology but then something happens in her head and she is passed all over again. Instead of talking it out she resorts to having sex with him. I found myself a couple times flipping back through to see what Jacob did to puss her off. One minute they are enjoying drinks by the pool and the next he is inviting her to bed and she says that the anger was seething within her. I am really sorry but what happened between the drinks and the invitation to bed to set her off.

** HOT -- SEXY -- STEAMY**

(My review below is a general description of the book. It does not contain any spoilers nor I am not critiquing it and going to go over every point, that is up to you. I am giving a review I’d want to read to determine whether I want to purchase this book.)

The Storm Inside is the first installment to a promising series that leaves you wanting more of Jake and Eve.

Alexis Anne is a native Floridian, something that is almost as rare as finding sand lightning glass on your next visit to the beach. Rare. As a former resident who equated living in Florida as to ‘doing time’ I was pleasantly surprised to discover the little tidbits about my former State of residence by reading this story. For example, when they take a trip to Sanibel & Captiva Islands, I felt like I understood how it once was, before tourism overtook its pristine beaches.

Immediately, within the first page of the prologue you’re grabbed and sucked into the whirlwind romance between Jake and Eve. It’s quick and strong and when you think you’ve had enough, you want more. The book opens with a racy encounter between the two main characters and the author describes their connection so well, you feel like you are literally a fly on the wall and not ashamed to watch. If you can’t relate to their magnetism for each other, you hope one day that you will. And just like magnets, the strong connection can be broken, flipped and pushed apart. I couldn’t stop reading. I needed to find out why and if they ever got back together . And Alexis didn’t disappoint with giving any answers.

She is descriptive in her writing and keeps the pace relatively quick and easy to follow along. What I really liked about this story was the sense of realism, regarding emotion, reactions from the characters even the places mentioned. I found myself looking up the locations and hoping that they did truly exist so if I ever go back to Florida on vacation, I can visit them for kicks.

Finally, even though I’ve received my copy as an ARC for an honest review, I would’ve purchased it especially for the kindle price of $3.99. I would and have recommended this book to my friends and now I am recommending it to you. Jake and Eve are worth it no matter what format you chose. Enjoy!

I just didn't love this book and found myself skimming through most of it. It was okay. It felt like once Jake came back every other page had them having sex. I'm not against lots of sex in a book but it took up half the book and left little to the actual story. Once I skipped all the sex scenes I finished the book quickly. The story line was one that was "real" and could possibly happen to anyone. It's about Jake and Eve, who are in love, go to college together and have a very real relationship. Jake has demons caused by his parents. Eve is from a good, solid background and comes from some money or very, very comfortable living. Even with their differneces their love for each other is very strong. So when Jakes world explodes on graduation night he does whats best for him and leaves. He doesnt say goodbye to anyone, not even Eve. In the 10 years that he is gone he doesnt call, write or even let anyone know that he is alive and safe. He just dissapears. He leaves for a good reason and that is explained in the book. But ... he comes back 10 years later and waits at Eve's door. Remember, he didnt say goodby, didnt call and just simply left her which was really unfair to Eve who loved him very much. Eve is left with so many feelings, love vs. hate, anger vs. happiness, so many emotions that come from being left. The story continues with Jake trying to explain to Eve why he left, why he did what he did and how sorry he is but it needed to be done. Eve has to deal with understanding things from Jakes point as well as rectify her feelings about being left. So the situation is real. Their love is real and how they work thru the issues is also real.

It just ... I don't know ... I think these two had sex 5 times a day and every time it was detailed and written about. The story was really good and I think that needed to take priority over the sex. More story less sex and it would have been 4 stars.

I'm not certain if I will read the 2nd book at this point.

**Please note that this book should be read by those 18+ as it does contain a lot of sex and language.

Not sure where to start this review. I am sure there is a story about Jake and Eve somewhere tucked between the pages, just had a hard time finding it. I am all for books containing sex scenes, but I have never read one with so much.
They look at each other - need to have sex
They speak to each other - need to have sex
They fight – need to have sex
They breathe – need to have sex
Look, a hidden corner – need to have sex
Okay, so you get the picture.
Other than the sex – Jake and Eve are still struggling with a decision that was made ten years ago. There are some hurdles that they need to jump and demons that need to be put to rest. I liked the story, just wish there would have “more” to their story. Not sure if I will continue on to the next book in the series...something to think about.

**KIM'S REVIEW**

*4.5 Stars*

“We’d always made an explosive combination; that clearly hadn’t changed. If anything, the added experience and time part made what we’d had in the past look sweet and warm.”

When Eve and Jake first met 14 years ago, you would have thought they were soul mates. 4 years later Jake disappeared without a single explanation and Eve was never the same. 10 years later Jake’s back and he only wants one thing…

“Be mine and no one else’s?”

“And will you be mine?”

“I already am.”

Even though Eve was always there for Jake, he knew he needed to leave her and learn how to take care of himself. He wanted to be the man he knew she deserved.

“Baby, you loved me too much. I would have drowned you if id stayed.”

Eve thought she was finally over Jake but when he shows up again it just brings all the old memories and feelings to the surface.

“I hated him. I’d given him everything; my heart, my soul my life…and he’d run away.”

“Love wasn’t just an emotion; it was a full body experience. Once I was clearly not over.”

Eve tries to stay away from Jake in fear of having her heart broken again but their attraction to each other is so strong, it’s impossible.

“And I knew without a shadow of a doubt having him back in my life would lead to more pain and heartbreak. It was just what we did to each other. We were too much.”

This book starts off with a BANG! Literally!! ;) Their scenes together were so intense and the sex scenes were so hot, my whole body felt on fire. You could see how much these two really did love each other. But just because the sex is good and the love is still there, does that mean Eve can just forget that Jake left her without even saying goodbye? Without even giving her the chance to try to help him? Which always made her feel that she was never good enough. What happens when they talk about past encounters while they were separated? Will jealous rear its ugly head? Are they strong enough to survive this? Will true love prevail? Read this book to find out! I loved Jake and Eve’s story and am hoping we get more soon!

“You broke my heart and didn’t come back to make sure I was ok. You were so damned hell bent on saving yourself you left me behind.”

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I will be honest, I am not an avid reader of erotic romance. It isn't my go to genre at all. So I wasn't really sure what to expect when I picked up The Storm Inside. However, I was hooked from (very steamy) page one. So yes, the sex is hot, but above and beyond that the characters are very well developed, complete with both strengths and flaws. I am an avid reader of character-driven fiction and I think this was why I enjoyed Alexis Anne's novel so much. I enjoyed getting to know both Eve and Jake and learning about their past together, as well as who they had both become as adults. Jake, especially, has a lot to overcome. Stories about overcoming tough childhoods (tough being an understatement, so as not to spoil anything) can come across as trite and overdone when not handled well, but this author handles the situation realistically and believably. I especially appreciate that she makes reference to his continued use of professional counseling. It is a little thing, but something that I think added to the believability of Jake's personal growth. Alexis Anne's heroine, Eve, is a perfect match to Jake. She is a strong woman, determined not to be hurt by Jake as she was years before. As readers, we follow (and understand) her inner journey. I firmly believe that the main characters' individuality, personal strength and respect for each other is what really makes the sex scenes sizzle. I'm excited for the next installment of this story, and trust that I will be just as impressed with this author's ability to write both great characters and great sex.

I really enjoyed this book. It had a great storyline and kept me turning the pages.

The characters were likeable and relatable. Eve is trying to get over the guy in her past... She is content spending countless hours at work and building relationships with men who will never compare to her one true love. When Jake, her ex, shows up at her house her world is turned upside down. Her feelings are torn and she can't decide if she wants to let her guards down... Together they embark on a second chance at love.

The Storm Inside kept me interested through the whole book. Jake was the sole reason. He was damaged, yet dominant... controlling, yet caring... sexy & successful. Him and Eve's romance had a real feel. Things weren't always perfect. There were struggles they had to overcome to make their relationship work.

While I liked the story a lot I would have liked to see more of the family drama instead of just retellings of it. There were also parts that felt wordy... All in all I recommend this book to all mature readers. It was sexy, consuming, and entertaining.

3 to 3.5 stars

I wanted to rate this higher. The synopsis gave the book so much potential but Eve was way too forgiving to Jake! And not enough detail of where he’s been hiding for 10 years, or what he’s been up to. When the diary was introduced for Eve to read, I thought we were going to finally get some real answers but even that fell short.
Having been treated like crap before, I know in my heart and head that I would never allow a man to walk back in to my life as easily as Jake did with Eve (not that I’d want ANY of my exes back!!😳). But had I been Eve, I would have made him crawl on his hands and knees, while rediscovering this ‘new man’.....that’s what I was expecting from the story.

Love this authors’ works but this one just didn’t hit all the right buttons for me, I’m afraid.

Couldn't finish this. The writing wasn't so bad so I feel kind of bad making this a DNF, but I was 44% done and the characters had pretty much decided they were back together and I was already bored. I couldn't imagine finishing the rest. The author really isn't too bad, although she could use some good editing, but I wasn't terribly into the story anyway and when I realized the rest of the book was probably going to read like a Kristen Ashley, where they're mostly just hammering out the details of their relationship for half the book, I just couldn't bring myself to continue. I miiiiiight pick up this author again because she seemed like she had some potential, but I just could not connect with these particular characters.

This book was awesome. Avoided it for ages cos second chance romance but glad I read it, they are worth it.
He left and went off something military??? I'm not even sure. Ut wasn't clear to me where he went but that he had sex with everything in sight for a while. Then eventually got his crap together, knew he wanted to get back to eve so settled down with a booty call instead... what the heck? In saying that he knew he was coming back so hasn't been with anyone for a year.
She has an ex. he pops up every now and then.
They're a bit crazy. Very passionate. They have issues to sort but it ended with a hea

I've got one word: INTENSE! Okaaay, I can't stop at one.
I liked all the characters and although it was fine to be in Eve's head the whole time, I think the depth of Jake was lost. He's hot. He loves sex. He'll die for Eve and he's messed up because of his childhood (his father deserves a cement block around his ankle and a boat ride) Considering we were always in Eve's head, I think I'm yearning for what was in Jake's. Aside from that, I need a towel for my brow and a drink to calm down.

First in The Storm Inside series. I have mixed emotions over this one. I liked the premise of the story, but I don’t think it panned out. Jake and Eve were college sweethearts and had an immediate connection. They understood one another and were inseparable. But the night of graduation, Jake ghosted and Eve didn’t hear from him for ten years. Suddenly, he is back in her life and is there to win her back. Needless to say, there are lots of trust issues and things that need to be worked out. They do still love one another but Eve isn’t sure she can rebuild a relationship with Jake. He’s out to prove her wrong.

For some reason, the author felt that to show how close and unique of a relationship Jake and Eve had it required a lot of sex. The story was actually overshadowed by them jumping one another every other page. That was tiring and tedious. I skimmed through most of it because it became a bit ridiculous. If you can do that the story is pretty good. It doesn’t feel like the story ends on a cliffhanger, but it really does. The second book in the series picks up right where the first ends. Yes, even though the story was hidden in all the sexy times I got adept at glossing over those to get back to the story. The story itself is interesting.

Ten years ago, Jake made a choice. One that sounds like it was necessary for their continued mental well-being, but one that hurt them both, nonetheless. Eve’s had those ten years to stew over the choice Jake made, and she has some set-in-stone opinions about it now. I’m a sucker for a second chance and I loved seeing these two finally find their way back together. However, this whole book was one long grovel. Even in a second chance romance, where the right amount of groveling is absolutely essential, this was taking the whole thing a bit too far. Jake apologized repeatedly. And Eve forgave him, repeatedly, after getting mad at him for that long-ago choice all over again. After a certain point, Eve needed to make the decision and stick to it: either forgive him and mean it, once and for all, or hold on to her anger and cut him out of her life. I enjoyed this story but I’m a little dizzy from the runaround.

Kobo Books. 3.99 each book or 5.99USD for box trilogy.
I'm iffy on whether I will continue with the rest of the series. That was.... intense.

Eve and Jake's connection was intense. The whole relationship was intense. Eve struggles to let Jake back into her life. I couldn't help but think of the intense co-dependency of Bella & Edward from the Twilight saga.

The way Eve talks us through each chapter I was on edge the whole time, a sense of foreboding that one of their past demons would ruin everything.

Oh, and I purposely picked a book that didn't have a half naked man on the cover, and this book ended up having more sex scenes than any romance novel I have read lately! Sometimes a bit too rough and very exhibitionist for me!

I wavered between two and three stars, since the story itself was good I gave it three, had eve gotten it together sooner I would have given 4. My problem was eve; I understand not being sure and because of their past she wanting to avoid heart ache. But it took her most of the book to find her spine. Jake on the other hand I liked , he is a strong presence , he admits his mistakes and owns them. The story was really good , it is fiction people , and I enjoyed the characters . Hoping in the next story eve keeps her backbone . I am moving on to the next book because I am hoping the flow this one ended on continues.

I loved it!
Jake took off one night, no goodbye, no explanations, leaving Eve confused, angry and abandoned.
He returned several years later completely out of the blue, and Eve was not pleased. But their chemistry, their connection, their passion, their love are all undeniable forces that she can't fight, and really doesn't want to.
Jake and Eve's love story is hot, fierce and full of so much passion!
Must Read! Great book!
The entire series is great and this is where it begins!

I enjoyed their story but kept expecting something to go wrong and then them try fix it. Eve and Jake dated for 4 years whilst at college. Jake had a hard childhood, he was verbally and physically abused by his parents. On the night of Eve and Jake’s graduation, he just leaves, breaking Eve’s heart. No one hears from him for 10 years! 10 years later and he turns up ready to win Eve back.

Wow. This has got to be one of the best books I read this year. I read 575 books in 2016 and this was in the top ten. I cannot say enough about this book. The author really knows how to entertain her audience. Job well done.

I finally found a book that focuses on how real life occurs. Instead of having a big dramatic exit by one half of the couple this showed how couples face hard times, fight and make up. I hope to see more of Eve with her family.

Es una trilogía que se podía contar en un solo libro y con el primero no te deja esa sensación de querer saber que paso con los otro dos. Entretiene por ratos y otros solo de ganas de pasar las páginas para ver si pasa algo interesante.

DNF chapter 6.

Not really my cup of tea, a think more details about the characters’ job and responsibilities, not just keeping things vague, would help to paint a more realistic characters that I can like.

Cookie cutter too perfect Prince Charming characters are very boring to me.

Hot and sweet it’s like salty and sweet they go together. Alexis did an awesome job making Jake this come back as a strong rich full field man all he was missing was Eve. I can’t wait to read the rest of their story.

Ok story but long

I really enjoyed this story in the beginning. Half way through it started to drag. It was like the author kept going just to put more sex scenes in it - which is fine but there comes a point where things need to be wrapped up.

Great story but went on too long

I like how Jake and Eve overcame insurmountable odds, but there comes a point when you have to realize you went on and on and on and should have cut out a lot of the repeated bits. I won’t be reading anymore of this series.
