Un hombre deja sin comer durante tres días a la perra de su hermano, por miedo a que ella lo ataque, mientras el hermano prodiga cuidados a su madre moribunda; otro hombre finge interesarse en comprar el departamento donde pasó su infancia, cuando en realidad sólo quiere imponer a los inquilinos que lo ocupan la misma disposición de los muebles de cuando su familia vivía ahí; una apacible carrera rutinaria en una pista de atletismo degenera en una batalla tribal por la supervivencia, al descomponerse el alumbrado; dos hombres que no se conocen esperan dos camiones que viajan en sentido opuesto en un páramo desierto y, bajo el calor calcinante, terminarán por intercambiar sus destinos...

A través de las historias que conforman este libro, Fabio Morábito nos demuestra que la normalidad de la vida cotidiana es cualquier cosa salvo uniforme. En sus cuentos, la capacidad para torcer a través de detalles nimios el curso de los acontecimientos más comunes desemboca en situaciones extremas, donde la desesperación y la comicidad van a menudo de la mano. Y, por encima de todo, el tema de fondo de todos los libros de Morábito: la soledad, con sus momentos siniestros y también sus instantes luminosos.

Probably the first short-story compilation I've ever finished, and I'm glad for it!

Adding in a little personal reflection, I've always been the sort to look for connecting threads, continuity and big messages in books — and so, reading a range of short stories with no explicit connection is definitely a new experience for me.

Each story is quirky and unique in its own way, but what I particularly enjoyed is the simplicity and realistic nature of the stories. Though a little more uncommon, the settings don't feel very much out of the realm of possibility. The straightforwardness of the writing makes it easy to put yourself in the characters' shoes.

Out of the stories, I particularly enjoyed: The Next Stop, Mothers and Dogs, Nitric Cellulose, Night Bakery. Quirky yet emotion-jerking, I loved the feeling of witnessing these stories. I can't say I enjoyed every single story (maybe one or two were just too far-flung for me), but I respect the compilation no less.

At the same time, I also particularly enjoyed the feeling of being an observer in these stories. There are details that ultimately don't "contribute" anything to the story — no relationship to the plot whatsoever. But their inclusion makes the stories feel ultimately like you're observing the stories unfold — not just listening to a storyteller focused only on a single overarching point.

I loved almost every single story in this collection. I especially love how they're all set in mundane everyday circumstances and revolve around very relatable but often hilarious problems. For e.g., a woman's mom is dying, but she spends 3 days trying to work around her fear of large dogs to gather the courage to feed her brother's dog. Another one starts off as waiting for Godot between two guys waiting for buses going opposite directions, but then the bus (Godot?) came, and things escalated in such strange ways.

The last story (The Last Stop) really stayed with me. It's told from the perspective of a man listening to his plumber blabber on trying poorly to tell a very emotional story. In spite of himself, he gets sucked into it, and so did I. Every emotional rollercoaster he feels, so did I. Until that giant rug pull at the end. What a story.

Fabio Morábito es un feliz descubrimiento de fin de año -para mí. Recomendación de lectura de Andrés Neuman en un foro virtual. Cuentos de excelentísima hechura, con un dominio espléndido del tono y el suspense - uno nunca sabe a dónde se dirigirán su textos o porque han llegado hasta ahí. These short stories by Fabio Morábito are oddly emotionally charged while being somewhat droll at the same time. The characters are distinct and often idiosyncratic so the buy-in to each narrative is solid. There is also a sense of Jesús Gardea, less the magic realism and verging on being meta in couple stories. Very enjoyable book and l look forward to reading more works from this author.

Encontrar y conocer al mismo Fabio fue lo mejor que me pudo pasar este año.

Me encantó que el libro sea bastante sencillo pero con un gran mensaje. Cada cuento te transporta a situaciones que todos hemos presenciado en algún punto de nuestra vida. Te invita a la reflexión, sin olvidar que cada cuento puede tener una conclusión diferente para cada quien, y eso lo hace maravilloso.

Mis cuentos favoritos son: Celulosa Nítrica y El Balcón; los demás igual son muy buenos, pero me sentí identificada con esos dos. Viví algo similar.

Si estás dudando por leer este libro, ¡dale una oportunidad! No te vas arrepentir.

Fabio Morábito transforma situaciones aparentemente triviales en relatos inusuales y envolventes: las visitas que ocasionan los recuerdos de la infancia, alimentar a un perro ajeno, el impacto inesperado de unas cartas escritas por una madre, la espera de un autobús en la carretera, los primeros minutos en que abre una panadería en Berlín o el funeral de una actriz de cine. Aunque algunos cuentos pueden parecer distantes porque giran entorno a personajes privilegiados, la prosa precisa y los sutiles giros narrativos del autor convierten lo cotidiano en un territorio extraño y revelador.

Most of the stories are rooted in realistic circumstances. A lot of them exploring our neurotic tendencies when it comes to family, friends, social interactions. Sometimes they're played straight, but most of the times they take some turn. They are written so sincerely that most of the times it worked for me.

Lo más cotidiano, por más simple que parezca, esconde mucho más drama y verdad que cualquier historia cargada de muchos elementos para hacerla más compleja. No le puse 5 estrellas porque no todos los cuentos me gustaron, pero qué gran recomendación; además, se lee rápido y es un libro que no puedes parar de leer.

Como fue un regalo muy especial, intenté disfrutarlo lento, lamentablemente fracasé.

Estos cuentos navegan sutilmente por la incomodidad humana, sobre todo la incertidumbre de saber qué pasó, los finales son buenísimos y simplemente me pareció adictivo.
