the story starts out in modern day england with the main character named toudou kaito using his summer vacation to take a trip to plymouth, the place where the famous pirate and governor francis drake had resided. he’s with his friend, kazuya, who he doesn’t particular feel close to (or trust). reason being that his father is the president of a british branch of a company, and people tend to treat kaito differently due to wanting to be in good favor with the father. kaito struggles with his family situation as well. his mother doesn’t see him for himself, but as a tool to brag to other people. and his younger brother dislikes him because of his mother’s overwhelming affection for him. kaito doesn’t believe people are seeing him for HIM but for his family’s position (or in the mother’s case, his looks) and it makes him feel separated and alone.
during the trip, kaito stumbles upon a time terminal at the famous plymouth hoe, after hearing the "war cry of the beat of the drums by francis drake”. he slips back into time at the very same spot, but in the year 1587. once you hit chapter 3, when kaito goes back in time, things get really interesting.
vicente, a soldier of the spanish armada, is in england after being sent by phillip the 2nd to rescue mary, queen of scotland from the imprisonment of her cousin, queen elizabeth the 1st. however, he was too late because mary was caught planning to assassinate elizabeth (because elizabeth had promised to rescue her but was lying and had purposely kept her imprisoned because she feared that mary would overthrow her. mary was considered the legitimate heir to the throne and was supported by the english catholics) and so elizabeth had her beheaded.
vicente wasn’t able to save mary queen of scotland but he doesn’t want to return back home to spain, but to learn more about the british navy, and to hopefully meet the famous francis drake. vicente lost his little sister due to an illness, and not wanting to fill that powerless again, he strives to become better than the rest. as he’s walking and trying to hide from the british eyes, he sees kaito collapsed on the floor. he rushes to him, shock by kaito's foreign appearance, but had the intention to take care of him. however, kaito makes the mistake of telling vicente what was to become of the future: the spanish admiral and marquis of santa cruz was going to die and be replaced by the duke of medina sidonia. kaito also warns him that the spanish armada was going to lose to the brits, and angry by this, vicente strangles his neck to keep him from saying more, causing him to pass out. at that moment, the british sailors comes after them, and not being able to rescue the both of them, vicente leaves the unconscious kaito and runs away.
kaito is then turn over to see the captain of a particular ship named geoffrey. he’s a chill character who is the orphan after the messy, bloody family ordeal based on the catholicism vs protestant feud, and the persecutions that came out of it. so with no ties to a particular god, geoffrey does his own thing. he sails on a boat called "gloria" that he inherited from his guardian that adopted him. he hears from his subordinate, rufus, that kaito was taken to see the doctor, and intrigued by this new person, geofrrey goes over to the doc's place to take kaito with him as his "cabin boy" (assistant).
kaitou then deals with interrogation by a few officials’ reps to make sure he isn’t a spy. he finally gets to meet the famous sir francis drake; he learned from the event that happened with vicente that he shouldn't tell anyone the truth of being from the 21st century, and so he somehow manages to get out of seeming suspicious by feigning that he can see the future by looking at the reflection of a mirror (or a sword).
what i like about this was some of kaito’s realistic realizations when he got to this world. before he went back in time, he would ponder about the prospect of time travel and the idea of living in the 16th century with his friend kazuya, and would think how cool it would be to meet the famous people that they learned in history class, as well as sailing around the seas. but now that he’s actually in 16th century england, he begins to compare it to his own world. aseptic techniques and proper hygiene isn’t a thing here, and he becomes paranoid about cleaning his wound after being treated, or where and how to drink the water, fearing he’ll become ill because of it. also, little things that he took for granted like washing his hands or wearing clean clothes started being a huge deal to him, because washing hands after using the bathroom, taking a bath regularly, or changing into clean clothes daily is just not a thing here in this world. things that he didn’t worry about like getting ill because of the lack of preventive measures was now a pressing matter to him. people at this time would rather use their water to drink, not to waste by washing oneself. and so kaito struck a deal with geoffrey: he would trade any alcohol he receives for additional water.
time travel and going on adventures isn’t as great as it sounds, and i really enjoyed that realistic approach in his thinking.
i didn’t find the beginning all that interesting, though i really like kaito’s friend kazuya, but from chapter 3 onwards things start to amp up. don’t expect any battles or adventures or anything since the 1st vol is dedicated to world building, character introductions, and setting up the plot of the eventual battle against the spanish armada that would happen in the following year. if you like history, then definitely check this out. i ended up learning quite a bit from this era ;)
