Spring break has finally come. Kevin and Lilian are traveling to California with their friends and family, where they plan to enjoy a week at the beach and attend the San Diego Comic-Con.
Of course, with this mixed bag of yōkai and humans involved, disaster waits around every corner. Between getting caught in the middle of a war involving kappa and kitsune, a mysterious assassin who’s trying to kill Lilian, and the spandex-clad Sons and Daughters of Humanity, Kevin is going to have his hands full.
He really should have seen this coming. Whoever said that hindsight is fifty-fifty deserves to be punched in the face.
Brandon Varnell is the author of several book series, all of which involve anime-inspired fanservice. Having been an anime nerd for basically his whole life, his books tend to reflect that. He likes writing stories with loads of T&A, shonen-style battle scenes, and steamy romances that are both light-hearted and erotic. He is also a huge fan of harem anime, so most of his books feature harem romances. If that bothers you, you probably shouldn't read his books.

More fun, more action and more free-spirited humor! Need a break from the serious side of literature? Want to feel like a fly on the wall watching a group of young adults be themselves when no one is around? Not afraid to laugh at juvenile humor or body part ogling? Brand Varnell has done the almost unheard of! He has taken his cheeky American Kitsune series and actually developed his characters into changing and growing beings, tails or not. Kevin, our bumbling hero and Lilian, his adoring kitsune mate are off to celebrate the American Right of Passage, Spring Break. As if these characters need to go wild on the beach! Kitsune and humans alike take to the sun and sand with bawdy glee.
Sadly, trouble is around the next sandcastle as Lilian comes under the scrutiny of a mysterious assassin and the war between kitsunes and kappa places everyone in even more danger. What is Kevin going to do? Caught between a rock and hard place, it is his duty to find rhyme and reason while keeping Lilian safe. Face it, there will never be a dull moment as long as Brandon Varnell is the driving force for this quirky “tail.”
Sometimes silly, sometimes over the top, definitely not mainstream reading, there is a lot of fun to be had for anyone willing to talk a romp on the wild side.
Seriously, I have been a fan of Brandon Varnell’s style, probably BECAUSE it is refreshingly irreverent, makes me laugh, shake my head and is most definitely NOT a cookie-cutter tale. I’m also pretty sure I am his oldest fan because I read it for the fun of it!
I received this copy from Brandon Varnell in exchange for my honest review.

The fanservice content is about where you'd expect. Maybe a bit more, but if you've read the first four books in this series you know what you're getting into there and probably like that sort of thing. What is, at least to me, more noteworthy is a heavier dose of action and fighting, which is predictably conveyed in an anime-style homage. It's not overdone, which is good; you won't have a single fight lasting half the book, which is one reason I steer clear of DBZ and Naruto and its ilk. On the other hand, there are definitely some protracted fight scenes, and they are handled rather well (other than occasional slips like referring to Kiara's fists when she should only have one).
One thing that impresses me about this story continues to be the development. Rather than a one trick pony of boobs and chasing the oblivious male protagonist, the characters continue to show a depth and history which puts this above the To Love-Ru tier of fanservice. It is noteworthy, though, that this one features quite a bit of collateral damage and not a few deaths, and I feel the repercussions of those are not adequately explored. Of course, that could be addressed in the next book.
...there is a next book, I hope, because things seem far from being wrapped up.
Another enjoyable adventure from Brandon! Thanks again for writing this! I liked the fights, way more of them, and very well done. Juggling and using all those techniques was fun to read; really showed how crazy a supernatural fight can get, especially with creatures that actually use thier cool powers!
On the other hand, I was hoping for some resolutions to Kevin woes, both physical and romantic, or at least more progress than there was....
Which is not to say I didn't love this book. Just that I know you have some cool answers to Kevins justified frustrations and the love dodechahedron, and I want to see them. As well as the lowdown on Christine's cat. I guess that comes off as demanding huh? Sorry!
Anyway, I really enjoyed this book! Thank you!
Also, thank you Kirsten for the illustrations; they are very cool and add a lot! Kevins facepalm in the Hotel especially me laugh!
I don't like going on a long rant and i don't like spoilers but the way this book took that last turn near the end made this i think my favorite so far since Kevin is at a critical point in his life ( think the first time in rosario + vampire moka gave tsukune blood the first time...everything has changed and he will live the those consequences)
I have been reading this series since 2014 and its kept me on the edge of my seat it's almost like having a great anime to watch. I hope the series continues for a few more years as I cannot get enough but as I know everything just end. However sexy time hasn't been reached and maybe the harem will happen ufufuf.
A dark anime style Rom-Com with death and destruction
The story writing is simple and with so many anime references I can’t keep up. I’ve been an anime fan for many years, but not as much as the author obviously as many of the references go straight over my head. But the story itself is really enjoyable besides some of the side characters which need to be toned down I.e. Eric. So many tropes get repeatedly used so often that it does start to spoil the story a bit, lucky I like stories heavy on the romance and Kevin and Lillian work for me. There does seem to be a hint of the possibility of a harem forming, but I’m not sure I want that, but with another 5 or so books already written I don’t think this review will alter anything. Really enjoying reading this series, I’m off to grab the next one now.
As we continue through the series we see the same fun, action, and fan service that kept us reading right from the very first book. We also see an evolving plot, and wonder where it will go... looking forward to the trip :)
