Martha Woods is an avid writer of paranormal romance. Her latest series "Fatal Allure" is entertaining avid readers across the globe.
She considers herself to be remarkably average, exceedingly introverted and bland, which does not explain her interests in the distinguishable unique genre of the paranormal romance.
I am glad this was a freebie. Kiss of A Vampire is the reason I don't usually buy or read novella's. The storyline jumps around too much and the storyline did not connect well for me. It felt like I was reading a Outline for a full length book. The author has some great idea's but they and the characters just need to be flushed out. I got it when it was free on Amazon but it is still free on Kindle Unlimited.

Kiss of a Vampire has potential and Woods has laid the ground work for an interesting Vampire Diaries - ish like series. However it could use a little bit more development and fleshing out to really give the story and its characters their full potential. Still worth the read. Highly recommend.

Is it really necessary to completely ignore the use of I've, You've, We've in favour of I have, You have, We have?
Nobody talks like this and while I wasn't (oh sorry I mean 'while I was not') expecting a great deal from this I just got fed up and it's ('it is') all I could see.
I was given an ARC and voluntarily chose to review. I loved this book! It tells the story of tessa an abandoned, abused runaway who keeps running. She is telepathic and makes a living as a psychic. Enter kristian the hot smouldering vampire who unwittingly endangers her and protects her in equal measures. The characters lift of the page and you can't wait to see what happens next. Great world building but not overly fussy. Great plot and story arc. Highly recommended! Great start to a series.
Tessa and Kristian are characters I love. She has a spunk and he is moody, but they are in love. She is human and something more and he is vampire, but they fight together. A little mystery twist and good story is here.
I was able to pick up this book for free and I was really excited about it. It starts out pretty good and intriguing but for me if sort of fell apart at the end. It starts out, young girl, moving from place to place, meets vampire, finds out they're both being stalked and tries to stay safe with said vampire boy. It's all exciting enough but then comes the climax of the story. Perhaps it's just my copy but I found some inconsistencies and errors in formatting, word choice, etc. and the end just felt really rushed. I enjoyed the main characters and I'm curious about why Tessa is being followed but I don't know if I care enough to continue the series to find out.
I found this book a bit frustrating. On the one hand, it did have a lot of promise. It was a good idea and had interesting characters. There weren't too many typos. On the other hand, the author seemed to be in an awful hurry, rushing from one scene to the next without really exploring anything. It left the characters a little flat. There were times when I genuinely thought I'd missed something, like we were only getting every second chapter of a book. I'd be reading and suddenly think, "wait, when did that happen?" It meant that the connection between the two main characters came out of nowhere and left it feeling a little shallow.
Also, the book needs chapters. Instead, we have several "parts" which consist of large chunks of text (especially the first one) with a lot of section breaks (i.e. ***) where we jump a part of story that could have been interesting. When I started the book, my kindle informed me it'd take 40 minutes to read the first chapter! Presumably because it wasn't a chapter at all, but simply Part 1.
It was a pleasant enough read, but it could use being fleshed out a bit more and properly structured.
Wow, this was really good it kept me on the edge of my seat waiting for what was going to happen next. This has more than just your average vampire romance. You have witches, seers, and demons. This was well written and I loved it. Tessa found Friendships ,Family and love when she met Kristian. Something she had been missing her whole life. I can't wait to read what happens next.
Very good intense read. Kept me entertained. Had fun, excitement, and suspense, What a way to have your life go and then to meet someone different too. Then comes a lot of trouble. Good start to the series even though I don't like cliff hangers.
Tessa Burch is a psychic and running a stall on the Past Square Park site in this intriguing novella from Thriller Queen of the Night, the deliciously scary Martha Woods, part one of the terrific Calder Witch series.
Last customer of the day is Kristian, who comes cynically to prove to himself Tessa's a fraud, only to be stunned when she accurately reads his mind, without any probing questions beforehand. Dragging her from the tent, Kris holds her so painfully tightly on her wrist that she collapses unconscious! On waking Tessa's shocked to be in the company of the woman she visualised in Kris' mind - his vampire sister, Veronica - yes, Kris is a vampire too and believes he's caught one of their family's deadly enemies, a Calder Witch!
Does Tessa have any idea what he's referring to? When does Kris learn she's innocent of his suspicions? How does he prove he's a vampire to her? When does Tessa trust Kris enough to reveal her troubled past to him? Who is Veronica's nemesis - and why? Who is Selena and why did Kris need saving from her? Who warns Kris and Veronica of the approach of their enemies? How does Tessa help fight these people?
Despite a sudden ending the eager reader will be glad to know this book segues seamlessly into book 2 and so on, throughout the series. I would recommend the novella to fans of Twilight and Vampire Diaries, although no weres have made an appearance so far. Get your copy today and tell all your friends!
Aspires to a cross between Charlaine Harris and Laurell K Hamilton; achieving neither.
I bought a bunch of these on a whim and at an alleged bargain - I am utterly out of 'real books,' and my collection is in storage.
I wasn't expecting a great deal ... and got it.
The books ARE fun, an hour's diversion, and DO contain some genuinely good ideas. Tessa and her 'mysterious power;' Veronica's transformation/growth between books 1 and 2; etc. BUT these books absolutely BEG for some competent editing, or honest beta-readers. Appalling grammar, sentences that invert character references from the previous sentences, (I CAN provide examples,) are beyond distracting.
Unclear plot points: the phone call regarding the 2nd attack by the witches SEEMS to refer to the beach house, but APPARENTLY refers to the New York apartment (?)
Bizarre, inexplicable leaps, or lags, between scenes: Morgan and Veronica preparing to return to the Family with 'answers' in tow; a knock-down, drag-out fight between Veronica and Abby that has zero preamble, and makes you wonder if there were missing pages ...
Frenetic pacing at the expense of build-up, plot, and character development.
One star for potential and interesting ideas, and a truly unfortunate case of poor execution that, I fear, will mar all of these books. I hope I'm wrong ...

*rant ahead* The only thing I liked about this book was Tessa’s feisty attitude, but when it comes to an insta-love book that doesn’t last long and before you know it she’s completely swoon worthy over Kristin. And I find it hard to believe that Kristin being hundreds of years old falls so easily from meeting one girl by accident. There is no world building in how the witch or vampire society are and randomly all these vampires would show up and 1/5 would be introduced. Another complaint is that when a vampire and witch are fighting, why would a vampire be using a sword, they’re super strong and fast, and losing for that matter and then you have Tessa who just shows up, a human, and saves Kristin with one swing of the ax. The story and romance and characters were unreliable and not realistic. I understand it’s fantasy, but there is still some relevance to relate too. And the last complaint was that the book was so short that there was really no climax and plot to get into before it ended saying to read book two. Just a disappointment.
This is the first book I have read by Martha Woods and I really enjoyed it - getting caught up into the storyline and characters. I am looking forward to reading book two of this series. Tessa was a runaway teen, put into an institution when she claimed to be able to read minds. Her parents then died leaving her to be brought up in the foster care system, where she was physically abused, so at 16 she ran away. Making a living from her gift, she posed as a psychic and traveled around the country holding a stall at the state fairs, reading people's minds and telling them what they wanted to hear. Kristian a vampire goes to Tessa for a reading and when she tell him more than she should know he kidnaps her believing her to be one of the Calder, a group of witches seeking to abolish all vampires. I won't tell you any more as I hate when reviewers say too much and spoil it for other readers.
Tessa is a fake psychic that travels from state to state working festivals and such. Nobody knows she is really a mind reader and tells them what they want to hear. She was institutionalized as a child for hearing voices. While she was there, her parents died in a car accident. She had to lie about not hearing other peoples thoughts to be released into child services custody. At 16 she ran away from her foster family who abused her. This is why she doesn't stay anywhere for very long. A man came to her table while she was getting ready to leave and he stares at her and drops a hundred on the table. She doesn't say anything and he drops another hundred, she scoops up the bills and tells him he is worried about Veronica and the Calder witches. He grabs her and kidnaps her for her ability. Will she be able to help save his family and her own life from these witches and become a vampire like the vamps want? Will she fall for Kristian, even though Veronica tries to warn her off?
In this book I was surprised by how interesting it got in the early first part. Most books make you wait for am interesting moment later in the book.
Tessa is a fake fortune teller but she has an amazing ability to reads minds. Well she gets a customer just as she is about to pack up for the night and her world quickly becomes something she never thought she ever wanted. I don't want to spoil the book for the ones that has not read this so I am just gonna say that it was a great book. You won't be disappointed if you read it. I think the only problem I have with this book is it was too short but considering it was also just right amount of length. I can't wait to read book 2 in the series. So I gave this book 5 stars because it was interesting and had my favorite supernatural in it which is Vampires.
Loved this book. Was interesting and the characters was pretty believable and quirky.. Lol Tess a young lady, working at street fairs and festivals telling people's fortunes, doesn't realise that her life's in danger until a very handsome Kristian approach her for a "Reading", not realizing he's a vampire... and that things does bump at night and some things aren't just made up as in the stories she read... Lol
And so their journey begins together and not without a fight... Will they have a HEA? Secrets and more gets unveiled and really bad witches are on their tail, and as yet we need to find out as to why that is...
I liked the overall story but it was lacking some structure and depth, Tessa and Kristian's characters are interesting but there was an insta love that had me wondering where that came from, also, the storyline seemed to swap direction making me re-read parts thinking I'd missed something. A couple of errors, mainly out of place words left in and at least one continuity error I noticed. At times parts of the story felt rushed which is a shame because this could really be a story you could get engrossed in. With a bit of filling out and structure to improve the flow, this could go from an ok read to a really good one.
So a new author for me but a decently good bundle. Kiss of A Vampire is a good read. I liked the dialogue between characters. The drama and action kept it moving. I definitely want to read the next installment. The next book The Vampire's Desire was also a good read. Definitely mysterious and drama filled. Scary at times with the whole ghost thing but still intriguing. The Alpha's Return was a delightfully good read. It was funny and dramatic. Action filled and passionate. The last book is Escaping The Demon's Trap. I didn't really like this book although I liked the characters. Too many typos. Confusing storylines at times.
Very interesting series. I received the first book in the series to try out the series and I liked it well enough to get the next three books in the series. It was pretty well written and kept my interest. My only gripe with the book so far is the very few grammatical errors I ran across, but only because they tend to disrupt my reading process. I'm very interested to find out what is in Tessa's past and what she can do. The mind has always interested me in how it works with mind reading. Can't wait to get into book two.
First let me state that I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review.
Wow!!! This story started slow but picked up really quickly. It doesn't leave a cliffhanger per say, but it does leave you wanting to read the next story. It leaves you wanting to know more about Tessa, like who & what she is. I want to know how Tessa & Kristian's relationship progresses, and if Veronica & Morgan stay together, and what's Ally's deal. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up.
I chose to give this story a 5 star rating because it has great characters, a storyline that flows smoothly and it kept my attention throughout. I am anxious to read the next installment to see where the author takes Kristian and Tessa in their journey. Vampires, witches, demons and other paranormals are all involved in the story...something for everyone. I voluntarily reviewed this book without compensation.
I really liked this book I reviewed an exclusive copy.
Tessa is a wanderer who reads minds. She is a fortune teller. Will this be her undoing. She meets sexy vampire Kristian who first thinks she is the enemy. Can Tessa and Kristian live with all the terrors to come. Will their love be destroyed by enemies. I really like Tessa she is a spunky young lady and Kristian is sexy vampire.
Very good. Very intriguing. The vampire lore isn't exactly new or anything but Martha Woods' take on witches is interesting. The characters are very believable and the action is pretty intense. The love making is scorching hot and it is really fun having a character that can read everyone's mind. I can't wait until the next book. I'm glad it's already out because while it didn't exactly end on a cliffhanger, this book did end before things are fully resolved.
This book is quickly paced, with strong characters. At times it was a bit jumpy, and would jump in the story which would give me pause to try and get caught up to what was happening, which did interrupt the flow a bit. There were also a few editing issues, that weren’t bad, but were noticeable. Overall I liked the story, even though it ended on a mild cliffhanger. I will continue on with the series and see where it takes me. Reviewed by Cyrene
I felt that the story was average. While I know there is a limited word count with novellas, but there was nothing outstanding about the storyline. I disliked that the characters were suddenly “in love” with no lead up how those emotions came about. The copy of the book I was given didn’t have the same title as the published version so there almost wasn’t a review. There were a few typos that I hope were picked up prior to publication.
I really enjoyed the beginning of the series. I will definitely continue reading on; I gave the review 4 out 5 stars because I didn't think the plot always ran smoothly but it was still very enjoyable. I would recommend this for anyone who enjoys paranormal romances & mystery.
I thoroughly enjoyed this fast reading new version on the old battles between witches and vampires theme, and it made for a very suspenseful action story. I thought the characters were very relatable to the reader as they struggled with their search for love and a sense of belonging in their lives. This is a voluntary review of an Advanced Readers Copy of the book.
Tessa is a compelling character. She has powerful magic, but doesn't understand it and hides it. Kristian is a powerful vampire who comes to love her. They have strong enemies that they must battle for survival. I like the witty dialogue and the romance. I look forward to another book.
I have read vampire stories before but this so far is the best I have ever read. I love how the author has integrated the witches and the demons in the story. A powerful story of love and mystery. I look forward to the continuation. I highly recommend this read.
