I loved reading and looking at this book! It's a fun way to interface with history through the eyes of a cat, in nine different time/place combinations. Most of the history I knew (at least loosely), but not all, and the specifics of the cats' stories made it fun and easier to remember some facts that may have eluded me in, say, a pub trivia competition. The illustrations are delightful, and the stories endearing - some even sad, but most with good outcomes for the kitties! It's a quick read with some museum-exhibit type factoid pages that are well-researched. I did have some "um" moments about some of the cultures covered, but since this is a book covering history, I can leave it at that and just enjoy the cats.
This book combines fiction and non-fiction and is told from the viewpoint of a cat in each period of history that it covers. Naturally, with only nine "lives" only a few time periods can be covered. It begins (of course) with the Egyptians, who worshipped cats, and continues on to the present, finishing with Literary Cats.
A charming (at times, heartbreaking) collection of stories about a cat's nine incarnations as different felines in different times and places. Each story is accompanied by a little historical background and gorgeous pictures. If you love cats and history, check it out!
