I've never experienced a paranormal event, at least not one I choose to remember that way. But I'm wondering has author, Bibiana Krall seen more than meets that natural-world-eye, as she gives one of her protagonists her name and crafts a frightening short story that feels remarkably real. Alice, the supporting character is well written, but the literary order of the day is suspense. I had to wait until morning to finish, as I didn't want to be up all night in deep thought or worse, scured (scared). I've become of fan of Krall words, a follower of her phrases. Better to let them read for themselves.
"Her illness was so aggressive-that one of her personalities was actively trying to destroy the other six."
"He uses fear like steak sauce and moral sins build his dormitory, one human at a time."
"Pure evil aint pretty. That’s the truth."
"Celestial backup is never a bad thing."
This one gets five big stars and is highly recommended.
This was an incredible story filled with the expectancy that made me want to change the page with so much anticipation. I had to take a deep breath to find out the twisted plot, in the end, such an intriguing short story that will make you think tomorrow and the next day. I truly recommend this Amazing book.
This is the fifth story I've read by this amazing author. Alice had me hooked from the very first page. This story was deeply chilling and ingenious! This author has very quickly become one of my favorites. She (Krall) knows just how to craft her words to pull you right in! Here are just a couple of examples.
- Dread, barb-wired my chest. There was a grain of truth in her eyes, a grain of truth treaded water in my gut too.
-Was it possible that Satan was here right now to collect my half-assed soul? ( I PARTICULARLY LOVED THIS LINE!)
A short and amazing read! Very Highly recommended!- Author Angel Strong
This is the first book that I've read by this author and I will certainly be reading more. Adored Bibiana Krall's writing style.
Alice is a wonderful short story. The descriptive writing hooked me from the first page. I became drawn by the imaginings of Alice's past, prior to her stay at a homeless shelter. In a short space of time, the reader realises that a supernatural element has some connection with the main character.
My mind was captured by hints of the forbidden. This story contains an untold mystery that briefly hints at ancient knowledge, in particular, Zoroastrianism, which becomes layered with the present.
An eerie tale of overcoming fears and creating an unusual bond. I thought the quote by Poe at the beginning was a perfect introductory touch.
Great read. I'm still pondering on Alice's story. :o)
I am fan of horror stories with mental illness subject. This is powerful, emotional story about human view of unusual personality. What is evil indeed? Something what we feel or see? Something what is declared as evil? Story brings powerful message, to face it with your fears and failures, even it means to face it with devil itself. Alice left alert sign and memory which will not fade. Thanks for the wonderful story.
I loved “ALICE: A Supernatural Short Story.” Oooh! Spooky, creepy and more! Don’t read alone at night. I made that mistake, only to start second-guessing every scratch or creaking-sound in my house. Settling noises? Well, I can only hope. This little story packs a mighty punch! It really delivers! I’m a huge fan of everything by Bibiana Krall but always wish her short stories were much longer. ALICE is no exception. I could have kept reading and being scared forever. To really scare the reader, the story must be believable and ALICE is! I understand it is being made into a TV Series, which I am really looking forward to watching. Maybe it will inspire the author to turn this short version, into a full-length novel? I know I’d order it the minute it came out. I can’t recommend this story highly enough! Add it to your library today, and if you like it—and you will, she has many other books out as well. Enjoy!
This is a very short supernatural tale, a story which will have you sitting on the edge of your seat, possibly even shaking in your shoes. The author has the ability to place you in the very surroundings you fear, evoking a sense that you can actually feel and smell much of what the main character is experiencing when she first meets the very strange Alice.
Highly Recommended, especially if you are looking for a quick read. (Under one hour.)
Alice is a fabulous and scary short read that takes place in a women's shelter. The protagonist is a working college student who has a memorable encounter with the title character, a guest in the shelter with a colorful past. If you like spooky tales, give this brief, well-written one a read!
The unusual cold presages evil to come as college student Bibiana finishes a day of classes, a part-time job, and begins her night shift at Beth Manna, a shelter for the homeless. She’s struck by a new resident Alice Barnett a woman with a history of criminal offenses and mental illness. But it’s not Alice’s mental illness that’s disturbing, but something strange in Alice’s eyes. Soon after everyone is off to bed, and the home has been secured, Bibiana heads to her private quarters to finish school work. Just as she’s about to doze off, a loud bang startles her from sleep. It’s Alice, on a mission to bring Bibiana to a man on the upper floor. Believing Alice is having a psychotic episode, Bibiana plays along, and heads upstairs, but unusual sounds, smells, and eerie sensations warn her of something evil waiting. Bibiana begins to suspect Alice is telling the truth. What she experiences upstairs is ungodly and unexpected, confirming her suspicions. Alice is not crazy, merely an unfortunate soul, a messenger of an evil older than time itself. Alice is a very well crafted short story by Bibiana Krall. I can’t wait to read the sequel!
A really great short story! An ending I couldn’t guess. The author is really good at creating a believable yet eerie tale. A quick read. My only disappointment was the length (even though I knew it was a short story) because I wanted more. Hope to one day read more about either the title character or maybe the other character in this tale. This is the 2nd book I’ve read of this author and I’m never disappointed!
This amazing story embraces all, fear, action and suspense. The interesting and original plot captivates you until the last page. This book is one of the best supernatural stories I have ever read. I highly recommend it.
Bibiana Krall draws you into this story of suspense and chills from page one, taking you step by step to face evil, and the fears within. Haunting characters and narrative, keeping you in suspense till the very end. Highly recommended!
Review of Bibiana Krall’s Alice: a supernatural short story I began reading this short story that occurred years when the narrator was young and attended college. The narrator worked at the homeless shelter then. Alice, a woman with a multi-personality disorder, has been in and out psychiatric facilities for the past years, and she spends a night at a homeless shelter where Bibiana, the narrator, had just started her night shift. There is a noise that is unsettling to Alice and calls on Bibiana, the only staff member on duty, to put her mind at rest, by dealing with the disturbance. Alice claims she knows what’s causing the noise, in some section of the house, but cannot help being afraid. Bibiana doesn´t seem too confident in handling the request, out of trepidation.
Nevertheless, Bibiana decides to deal with the situation, instead of seeking assistance from the law. As she sets out to tackle what lies behind Alice’s fear, Bibiana has to suppress her fear in the process. Her determination and the presence of Alice, a few steps behind! Will Bibiana succeed in quelling Alice’s troubled mind? The story serves up a couple of surprises.
There were a few ingredients that enrich this story – fear, teamwork being two.
At the end of this tale, I smiled. It was a pleasure to read! A must read for lovers of mystery
A homeless shelter, a cold night, and an over-worked college student set the stage for this chilling short story by author Bibiana Krall. Add in an emotionally unstable resident and a lack of any additional hired support hanging around, and the situation turns terrifying. Then, through the artful use of well-crafted prose, the author pulls you right into that dark hallway next to her as she explores all possible hiding places for evil. In addition, during this entire nightmare encounter, alternate waves of fear and compassion for the mysterious Alice are present and palpable. What was her ultimate fate? Did she bring this evil with her or was it already waiting there? In the end, one of the only solid conclusions that we're left with is that Alice had much more to her than what could be contained in a file folder...including the ability to sense an amazing young woman's capacity and compassion. Five stars and high recommendations for this short but mighty thriller!
I heard Bibiana Krall talk about this short story on her YouTube channel and I bought the book while she was still talking about it. It's amazing, terrifying, thought-provoking, and, perhaps most incredible, based on true events. I wish I had met Alice, and I wonder what happened to her. And I wonder, as the author does, is Alice crazy or simply a genius with an extraordinary capacity for depth of feeling? You have to read this short tale and decide for yourself.
Wow! This was such an enjoyable short story packed with suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat. The author quickly drew the reader in through her enticing, creative writing. I found myself holding my breath, continually trying to second guess as the story unfolds but ultimately the ending was unexpected! It's a great read!
An atmospheric short story about a girl who encounters horror at her midnight shift at a homeless shelter. It is one of the best short stories I have ever read. The story is mesmerizing as it builds suspense. A must-read for fans of horror.
A glimpse into the life of a busy, sleep-deprived college student working two jobs, one of which would give me pause, is a tasty setting for this story - the lone employee on the night shift in a homeless shelter. Alice, one of the residents that night, is steeped in intrigue. Her palpable mystique is both riveting and frightening. I read this story ravenously and yearn for more! Alice provided a good old spine chill, just perfect before snuggling down under the blankets to wonder and imagine ...
