Khushwant Singh, (Punjabi: ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਵੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ, Hindi: खुशवंत सिंह) born on 2 February 1915 in Hadali, Undivided India, (now a part of Pakistan), was a prominent Indian novelist and journalist. Singh's weekly column, "With Malice towards One and All", carried by several Indian newspapers, was among the most widely-read columns in the country.

An important post-colonial novelist writing in English, Singh is best known for his trenchant secularism, his humor, and an abiding love of poetry. His comparisons of social and behavioral characteristics of Westerners and Indians are laced with acid wit.

খুশবন্ত সিংয়ের অপ্রকাশিত প্রবন্ধসংকলন, স্মৃতিকথা এবং জোকসের বই 'Me, The Jokerman'। অপ্রকাশিত বাক্যটির মাধ্যমে বুঝতেই পারছেন খুশবন্ত সিংয়ের জীবদ্দশায় লেখাগুলো বইয়ের মর্যাদা পায় নি৷ তাঁর সিগনেচার লেখনীর স্টাইল এই গ্রন্থে অনেকটাই অনুপস্থিত। তবুও কিছু লেখা, কিছু কথা এবং খুশবন্ত সিংয়ের কিছু ভাবনা পাঠকের ভালো লাগবেই৷ 

মানুষের দৈনন্দিন প্রত্যাশা, উচ্চাকাঙ্খাই একমাত্র সুখের চাবিকাঠি নয়৷ খুশবন্ত সিং লিখেছেন, 

' Should one really  bother too much about what one has to do to earn one's living? If a modicum of a work can earn enough to live in modest comfort, why should we strive for excellence? 

It is installed in us from childhood that we should put our heart and soul into what we are doing, it is become our dharma, our religion. ' 

সেরাই হতে হবে৷ এমন মানসিকতার ফলাফল শূন্য। বাইবেলের উদ্ধৃতি দিয়ে খুশবন্ত সিং লিখেছেন, 

' That which has been is that which will be, that which is done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.' 

খুশবন্ত সিং ঈশ্বরে বিশ্বাস করতেন বলে মনে হয় না৷ অন্তত তাঁর লেখার দাবি একথাই বলে৷ তুলনামূলক ধর্মতত্ত্ব নিয়ে লেখা কলামটি পড়ার মতো। সেমেটিক তিনটি ধর্ম। যেমনঃ ইহুদি, খ্রিস্টান এবং মুসলমানদের ধর্মীয় রীতিনীতিতে অনেক মিল রয়েছে৷ বিশেষ করে, ইহুদিদের বেশ কিছু ধর্মীয় রীতি 'আ্যডপ্ট' করেছে খ্রিস্টান এবং মুসলমানরা। উদাহরণ হিসেবে তিনি লিখেছেন, 

' A good example is Islam. It’s monotheism exists in Judaism and Christianity. It's five daily prayers have roughly the as the Jews ; its greets salaam alaikum is a variation of Jewish shalom aleichem. ' 

ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশ উদ্ভুত তিনটি ধর্ম যথা- হিন্দু, বৌদ্ধ এবং শিখ ধর্মের রীতিনীতির মধ্যেও যথেষ্ট মিল রয়েছে৷ 

গীতার ব্যাখা আমার ভালো লেগেছে৷ ধর্মীয় দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে নয়৷ খুশবন্ত সিং গীতাকে বুঝতে চেয়েছেন বাস্তবতার নিরিখে৷ কৃষ্ণার্জুন আলাপের মধ্যে খুঁজেছেন সত্যের সন্ধান৷ 

একসময় কৃষ্ণমেননের অধীনে লন্ডনে ভারতের হাইকমিশনে কাজ করেছেন খুশবন্ত সিং৷ এই বইতেও কৃষ্ণমেননের চরিত্র বিশ্লেষণ রয়েছে৷ আছে  গান্ধি পরিবারের বৌ মেনকা গান্ধি বনাম শাশুড়ি ইন্দিরা গান্ধির দ্বৈরথের কাহিনি৷ ভারতের সেনাবাহিনীর শিখদের স্বর্ণ মন্দির আক্রমণ এবং কুখ্যাত ভিন্দ্রেনওয়ালাকে নিয়ে সেই সময়ের প্রেক্ষাপটে রাজনৈতিক কলামও এই বইতে আছে। 

প্রেম বনাম যৌনতার সম্পর্ক কতটুকু? আদৌ তাতে ফারাক আছে কীনা? তা নিয়ে খুশবন্ত সিংয়ের বিশ্লেষণী লেখা যে কারোই ভালো লাগবে। দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি উদার করবে৷ 

প্রকৃতিকে ভালোবাসতেন। অন্যদেরও উৎসাহিত করতে চেয়েছেন৷ 

'জোকারম্যান' হিসেবে খুশবন্ত সিং শুনিয়েছেন সর্দারজি এবং পাকিস্তানের সামরিক শাসক জিয়াউল হককে নিয়ে কিছু চুটকি। 

পুরো বই পড়তে আনন্দ পাই নি৷ অপ্রাসঙ্গিক কিছু লেখা ছিল৷ পড়তে ভালো লাগেনি।

First of all, one additional star because he is Khushwant Singh, the book of course is a quick read which includes his anecdotes about his favourites. I enjoy his every piece because no one can write like him with such humour, vulgar, erotic but in a clean way.

I haven't read much of Khushwant Singhs novels recently, but reading this book brought to my mind some of his short stories read about a decade before. I even recall the entire short story titled 'The portrait of the lady' which we had read in the ninth grade. This book however is a collection of thoughts and anecdotes from Khushwant Singh, delving on various topics of health and love, India and Pakistan, pre independence and post independence, devouts and atheists and human behaviour in general. Realism is an aspect that is reflected in most of his writings and you can notice it in these essays too.

Khushwant Singh does not fail to delight. This book is a revelation. I never knew he was a nature lover. His deep insights on every topic leaves the reader wanting more. This year my reading is dedicated to reading most of his books. I am on a high and back to enjoying reading, my greatest passion.

This book is a compendium of Kushwant Singh’s essays and articles about various riveting topics. Every page contains at least a pinch of humour and it is very much typical of Kushwant.

Well, to be very frank, this was my first Khushwant Singh's book, although I wanted to read one for a long time. The anecdotes amazed me by the open mindedness he had in his age. His humor, his sarcasm, his wit, all strike the chord totally even to this generation!
Enjoyed reading the book. Very light book and one may label it as thought provoking since I found the book to be very modern.

Quintessential Khushwant! These are mostly diary entries which have been compiled and released. Some informative and some hilarious entries. Straight-forward, funny, naughty at times. Quick, fun read.
