Out There

Rate this book
A long, original novella by Quentin S. Crisp.

With illustrations by Master Agostino Arrivabene.

An exclusive Mount Abraxas / Ex Occidente Press limited edition.

One of the most startling books of 2016? We think so.

Out among the stars, is where Jake would like to be, even if that means death. On a hiking trip up a Japanese mountain with his friend Sean, is where he is actually going, in an attempt to find
a famous-obscure temple from an old story. In the vital wilderness of the mountain slopes, Jake's perceptions are affected. His gaze turns from the future to the past, from the past to the present, and from the present to something... out there.

A novella steeped in Japanese folklore, Out There is another of Quentin S. Crisp's explorations of the relevance of traditional Japanese aesthetics in meeting the spiritual challenges of the modern age. Time passes differently in these pages. At some point, if you are lucky, you might find you have taken the wrong turning.

I ended my brief journey across the intricate Quentin S. Crisp Road with "Out There," a narrative about travels. In fact, this beautiful book is a great tribute to the displacement, to the trips, to the fact of being lost. Thus, countless travels crossed the path of the two adventurous protagonists – each and every one, from imaginary to interplanetary, including safe, suicidal, long, brief, near and distant journeys. Homage to the Japanese weird tradition – with that challenge to the illusory reality that surrounds us –, to the foxes of Ueda Akinari, to the kappas of Akutagawa. And a great story, a truly contemporary classic.

I repeat what I said above. And this continues in the same vein. It is miraculous stuff and surely this is QSC’s greatest work to date. Surely as the words ‘surely’ and ‘no doubt’ express a certain amount of doubt, too? Passions of the moment are no doubt deceptive ones.

The detailed review of this book posted elsewhere under my name is too long or impractical to post here.
Above is one of its observations at the time of the review.
