Seventeen-year old Meghan doesn’t remember her childhood and practices magic in secret. Her sole ambition is to bring a warrior’s soul from Dark Earth to become her dragon and protect her while she develops into a mage. When her interpretation of a Dark Earth death vision goes awry, Meghan gets both more and less than she bargained for.
I wrote Date Night on Union Station while taking a break from work on a science fiction epic I've been struggling with for years. The goal was to cheer myself up and to find out if there is still an audience for a science fiction comedy that gets its laughs from dialogue and funny situations rather than from gross-outs and shocks. As many readers have pointed out, the EarthCent series could be rated PG under the old fashioned system, no bloodshed, no graphic sex, no four letter words. And after years of imagining a galaxy for my epic in which multiple human civilizations are at war with each other, it did me a world of good to write about a galaxy where most people are just trying to make a living and find some joy in life. I received so many requests to extend the Date Night universe into a series that I put aside my epic for an extended period to write a sequel, Alien Night on Union Station. The events take place five years after the conclusion of Date Night, and the plot involves a mix of business, diplomacy, gaming and family relations. As a bonus, we finally get to meet Kelly's mother. After the positive response to Alien Night, I wrote a third book for the series, High Priest of Union Station, which is currently in the editing stage and due out in mid-October. I just started a book that extends the EarthCent galaxy with a different mission and cast of characters, though they may intersect at some point.
This book and the whole Union Station series delight me. No long, bloody battles. No plots to destroy or save the universe. Just great characters and delightful, inventive stories. Humor and good fun abound with people you'd like to meet. Read them all, as I have and wait for more. I'm hooked.
This was a nice story. It was about a guy who gets pulled from our world to become a freaking dragon in another world. What's bad about that? What else do you need to know? Dude goes from dying to mouthing freaking fire breathing burn your punk az up don't mess with sleeping dragon. It's a win right?
Anyway, the story does go kinda fast. It could have been pulled apart into two books, but it was cool that it wasn't one of those end of the world type deals. It was two people coming of age trying to figure out how to live life.
An interesting approach to dragon lore, December 15, 2016
This review is from: Meghan's Dragon (Kindle Edition)
A fine fantasy novel from the author of the Earthcent series which began with the very funny novel, Date Night on Union Station. There is adventure and intrigue in this volume but an E.M. Foner novel just wouldn't be right without his humor. This one is right. Meghan's summoning of her dragon reminds me of a short story which I read some years ago. In that story the sorceress got a U.S. Army tank with full battle load instead of the living dragon she expected. Magic is tricky. The novel is for adults but should entertain mature young adults as well.
Let me begin by saying that I am very much a fan of E. M. Foner. I adore the Union Station books, and the A.I. Survey team books have been a source of great pleasure. So you can understand that I came into this book very much wanting, indeed, expecting, to enjoy it greatly.
I read this book because of its author. E.M Foner's EarthCent Ambassador series and the other related books have become some of my favorite fiction reads. I loved his really unique take on the Sci-Fi genre and was curious what he would do with fantasy. Meghan's Dragon does not disappoint, As a matter of fact while it is quite different from the EarthCent books, it contains wonderfully strong, well development characters the reader can genuinely care about. This was a really fun story with fantasy action and adventure combined with generous doses of humor. The main characters are remarkable. I don't know if Foner intends any more sequels to this tale, but while this book is complete, I would love to se these characters pursue other adventures. I genuinely enjoyed this book. I've now read everything Mr. Foner has written. Here's hoping he puts out a lot more. Great fantasy novel, pick it up.
Seventeen-year old Meghan is a dishwasher who practices magic in secret on what she considers Earth. She manages to transport Bryan, also a dishwasher, from the world that she refers to as Dark Earth. The backstory explains that thousands of years ago the two worlds were given a choice between science and magic. Meghan’s world chose magic, while Bryan’s (and ours) chose the stability of scientific laws. It’s not clear to me who the target audience might be. The characters, even for their young age, are rather immature and mildly annoying. The plot has some adult (or YA) elements, but seems more targeted at pre-teens.
A funny, sweet highly readable stand alone fantasy
Megan's Dragon is a funny, sweet story that is surprisingly satisfying read. The hero and heroine (Meghan & Bryan) are easily likeable who are surrounded with interesting secondary characters. Overall I would have liked the story to have a little more flesh in that sometimes the jump from scene to scene left me thinking I had missed a few pages. I'm hoping for a sequel to this story. Definitely recommend.
Not as much fun as the author's Union Station series, but still an entertaining read. A very odd couple as Meghan is matched up with a young man she plucked away from his humdrum Earth life in order to make him into a dragon. Funny book, with some tense moments as they collect the magic items to complete the spell. Also like the rowdy band of theater people they travel with. Did not like the ending, came together a little too preordained, but still worth the time.
That about sums up my opinion. The Author took the time to develop a world, characters, and interesting circumstances. This would be a book I would highly recommend for even preteens. I liked that there was a relationship that grew over the course of time. It was enjoyable to see the couple work through personality conflicts. And there was plenty of action.
This was a cute book. I enjoyed a lot of things about the book, but unfortunately it’s another story in which I didn’t connect with the main characters. There was a surprise or two along the way, but for the most part it was easy to see where the plot was going. It’s a cute, easy read, but not something I would seek out again.
I read it in about a day, and would have enjoyed at least 50% more book. The characters are fun and the world is interesting. I would have liked a much deeper exploration of their personalities and slightly more difficult quests. That said, I enjoyed the book immensely.
The book, for me, was okay at best. I didn't really like the characters for some reason. I don't know why I disliked this book, but it wasn't for me. I wouldn't say it was bad , it definitely wasn't. I think I was just in a wrong mood for this book, maybe I'll try it again at a later time to give it a fair chance.
I couldn't continue to read. I didn't appreciate the writing style. The story seemed so surface-level and clunky. I could feel my brains leaking out of my head while I read it and I am not the sort of person who enjoys an overly-cerebral story. I normally love YA fantasy. I just didn't dig it.
Love the Union Station series but am having trouble getting through this one. The premise sounded fun but the characters are not engaging me. I might keep reading to see if it improves. If so, will update rating.
I was really getting bored reading the same storylines rehashed when I came across this book. From the start it caught my interest and wouldn't let go. New ideas, great sense of humor and well written to boot! Will look for more from this author for sure.
No one that gets a solid four star rating should go home without a fifth star. The story is fun, the setting is comfortable and I will miss the characters now that I am done. This is a good book and I liked it very much.
I quite enjoyed this adventure! It has all the elements of a great story. Friendship, magic, traveling, treasure hunting, humor, dragons (of course) and clean romance. Loved the ending too, all questions are answered, and I ended the story with a smile 😃
Foner is really great, great imagination. This is kind of a medieval, dragons, mages, every one has magic to some extent, girl meets boy story. I don't want ruin it for you, have fun.
I have read this book along with most of the other books by E. M Foner. I have enjoyed them all. I wish you would follow up on this adventure. Please? Or have I missed something? Peace.
Very different from the authors previous works but still a very fun read. A bit of fantasy and some alternate worlds but an interesting story. I highly recommend this book.
Megan is a young mage and healer. Bryan is a young man pulled from his world into hers by Megan practicing her magic. They get involved in a treasure hunt and have lots of adventures along the way. A great story.
A noble effort but not as charming as it intended to be. The characters are used to tell the story, never quite making it to believability in themselves.
Love this book! It is fun and entertaining. The funny thing is I enjoyed this story all the way through and it think about the ending. It was the journey not the destination.
