Восток и Запад имеют принципиально различные представления об обучении, которые влияют на отношение к детям и образованию. Рассматривая результаты многих лет исследований, Цзинь Ли показывает важное концептуальное различие между западной моделью образовательного процесса, ориентированной на разум, и восточной моделью, ориентированной на добродетель. Первая ставит перед собой целью воспитание разума для понимания мира, а последняя уделяет внимание прежде всего нравственному и социальному самосовершенствованию.
