When Johan Booysen hears that the new Provincial Police Chief takes backhanders from a Durban businessman, he decides to give her the benefit of the doubt. But the evidence becomes impossible to ignore and he soon gets dragged down the corridors of power and politics into a web of intrigue, deceit and betrayal that, at times, he has trouble making sense of. Only when he is arrested, handcuffed and tossed into a cell does Booysen realise just how ruthless those opposed to him are – an opposition he comes to call the ‘cabal’ – and whom he believes have more blood on their hands than the so-called Cato Manor Death Squad with which he is closely associated.
Blood on Their Hands traces Johan’s Booysen’s life and career - from patrolling the streets of Amanzimtoti in the 1970s to his rise in 2010 to major general and head of KZN's Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation unit, the Hawks. But his tenure is short-lived. When Booysen decides to take on those so determined to be rid of him, each legal battle he wins is met by hostility and further efforts to shut him out of the criminal justice system. But capitulating is not in his DNA…
A deeply shocking account of how extensive and corrupt "state capture" has pervaded our society. An orchestrated repeated campaign utilising captured officials and captured media is used to eliminate and neutralise all opposition to the corrupt objectives. The rot emanates from the head of the fish.
I recall living in South Africa all the characters mentioned in the book. This is a must read of an ongoing saga that seems more like a soap opera, you can't make this stuff up, than real life events. It's sad to think of the wasted lives, money and time spent on persecuting innocent people. Would make a great movie.
A most insightful and compelling read - excellently set out for ease of reading and understanding how far down the slippery slope of corruption South Africa has already slid. Just like Mugabe, Zuma continues to ensure that those keeping him in power have access to the honey pot and anyone standing in their way will be removed, at any cost and not surprisingly cost to the tax payer. How the "leadership" of SA are abusing the basic structures of the country for their own personal gain and furtherance of their own agendas is made shockingly clear in this "cant put down" recording of facts. This book offers clarity on how the criminal justice system in SA has collapsed and how the corrupt political leadership are misusing the courts to prolong their fight to stay in power. Cap off to the likes of General Johan Booysen and all other honest folk fighting corruption and abuse of power within South Africa. This is a must read for anyone who has any interest in South Africa and its future.
