Life is changing for Avery Shaw. She’s searching for a house with her boyfriend Eliot so they can officially move in together. She’s been gifted special passes to Macomb County’s comic book convention – and she couldn’t be more excited. She’s also been put in charge of her most hated enemy at work, and the power is going straight to her head. When Eliot lets Avery visit the convention center early, the duo stumble across a dead body and Avery’s happy week is thrown into turmoil. She’s determined to find answers and figure out who killed the victim, but she has her hands full with other things – including her personal life – as well. Her former boyfriend Jake Farrell is in charge of security at the convention center – with an assist from Eliot – and he’s dealing with his own personal issues. In addition to jealousy over Avery and Eliot moving forward, he finds his relationship with his girlfriend Cara going down the drain. Comic book conventions are filled with funny folks, and Avery is happy to meet all of them – no matter how odd. As she gets closer to a killer, though, she becomes the new target. Jake and Eliot have to work overtime to keep Avery safe, but in the end, she’s the one who has to save the day if she expects those around her to survive. In a world full of superheroes, Avery may be the most wonderful of them all … as long as she lives to tell the tale, of course.
When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail. Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.
I liked this book but again at times I found the main character to be off putting. The Harley Quinn comparison is a very good choice for example her talent to manipulate people to her advantage, Avery does all the time by being mean, name calling or sex. Although it is a cosy so no sex is written about, just innuendo. Also the fact that they both think the world revolves around them. Once you come to understand that's just Avery and at book 9 she is unlikely to change then you can get to the mystery. I did feel although the author has a lot of fun with the comic com and I liked the number of name dropping, the mystery did get a bit lost with the house hunting, the ex boyfriend splitting up with his girlfriend and the fact that Avery was acting boss. But everything does get solved in true Avery style. It's the best week ever for reporter Avery Shaw. First to bribe her into house hunting her boyfriend gets her back stage tickets for a comics book convention, then her boss pays her to go and puts her in charge of another reporter. Not even finding a dead body can ruin it, if she can scoop the other reporters by finding the killer. Star wars might be her favourite film but she will have to channel her inner wonder woman if she wants to solve this case before the show packs up for the next town or she has to decide on a house. Although I did like the narrator, I do wonder if a less whinny narrator would be a better choice for the series. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Avery and Eliot are trying to find a house to buy together. But that is easier said than done. Then Eliot gets Avery into a Comic Book Convention that she is super excited for, until they stumble upon a dead body and Avery is after the scoop.
Add in some issues with Jake's girlfriend/ex-girlfriend, and you have some issues going on, especially when Eliot pisses of Avery.
This book was really good. Like every other book in the series, Avery was awesome. I adored her. And I even felt for her at times when she got upset over a few things.
Other than that it was nice to see Avery's geek be let out more, and how much she enjoyed the convention. I can't wait for more now.
I love this series. Its a guilty pleasure. I also like it better than the other by this author with the witches. I just connect more with these characters.
I hope this series goes on and on and on. Seriously, this installment was just so geeky and awesome.
I have no idea why I like Avery Shaw. I can't explain it. I just do. :)
Eliot gives Avery tickets to a comic-con and she's overjoyed. She's to cover it for the newspaper. Of course things can't be that simple for her so there's a dead body and Duncan is being his normal stupid self.
Worse yet, a guy with a knife tries to attack her. So that's one murder she has to work on for the paper but at the same time prevent herself from becoming murder victim #2. If that wasn't enough going on for her she and Eliot are moving in together and her mother shows up in the bedroom. There's also a strange magician she has to deal with.
Just another day for Avery. Another day, another murder. Another day, another problem with her mother. Another neat story.
Ok I can’t stand Avery’s attitude anymore this week. I won’t be reading the next book for awhile. She is just such a bish. Eliot did something for her in the bedroom that he would be embarrassed about if anyone found out and, of course, Avery blabbed it out to Jake and she was not abashed at all. That irked me. I understand Avery is a very sassy, snarky, and egotistical brat, but this book took it too far.
I think I’ll head back to Tonya Kappes, A Camper and Criminals Cozy Mystery, book 13 ‘Gear, Grills, & Guns’
I have read most of Amanda M Lee's books. I am reading the Avery Shaw Mysteries again, like watching a really good movie over. I just thought I would pause a minute to say anyone that likes a bit of snark, some mystery and some laughs should read her books. She has a lot of really great series out there. This is just one. Look for Amanda M Lee. Once you start one of her series it is hard to stop.
Each time I read one of her books I think”I won’t be drawn into this; I’ve read so many of her books that I know what to expect.” But each time I’m wrong. Her plots always end up hooking me. Her characters develop naturally, no matter how kooky—their humanity is convincing. I don’t know how she continues to interest me, but I’m only half way through her work and that makes me happy and sad. I recommend this author 100%!
I love sitting back and giggling through Avery Shaw's adventures. She's a complex, interesting and always entertaining character. Her crime reporter job makes the stories a little more believable than some cozy mysteries. Always good fun to read an Amanda Lee mtstery.
I have loved all the Avery Shaw Mystery books. Bylines & Skylines is one of my favorites so far. Amanda M. Lee is an awesome mystery writer. I love her characters and her stories. I always look forward to the next book. I recommend all the Avery Shaw Mystery books to my Mystery loving family and friends. Please keep them coming Amanda.
While I enjoy Amanda m. Lee's books; the characters are a little unreal and snarky. There is a bit too much sexual innuendo, but even with all that, her books are relaxing and enjoyable. Then I run across a line that slaps me upside the head ! "If you love someone, you do things for them'! This really spoke to me as I have been dealing with my husbands health issues for almost a year and there is no end in sight. Thank you Amanda for waking me up to my new reality and giving me something to keep me going.
Book 9 of this reread. Love this series. I love Avery's snark. I hate how much scrap everyone (mostly her family) gives her. No wonder she's the sarcastic wonder. In this case Wonder Woman. Was usual, love Eliot and Jake. Better if read in order, but not mandatory. Some spice, though $exy times are talked about a lot.
I love these books. They completely crack me up. Eliot is absolutely the best book boyfriend ever for putting up with everything he does. I adore him and Avery as a couple, and I'm ready to see what might happen next for Jake.
I've commented on previous revs that I wish Avery stood up for herself in her relationship more. Well, in this book she does just that. For some reason, this makes her more real to me ... It is like she's showing personal growth. Love this author!!!
Love the ongoing storyline. Great writing. All around fabulous series! The banter between Avery and, well everyone is on point. If you like Stephanie Plum, this is right up that alley. They should definitely be read in order. Can't wait to read the next one!
When your greatest obsession comes to town and you get to cover it, you feel like a queen. Unfortunately, her boyfriend is in charge of security and there is a murder.
Avery is in her element covering a comic convention when murder strikes and she jumps in to try and solve it. There’s the usual bickering and snarkiness that makes this author fun to read.
Avery does it again!!! Detail someone with her snark that is. She is gifted when it comes to making someone confused and crazy . Yet she always saves the day and gets the story. All while being the boss! A must read!!!
This is a very entertaining series. Not always predictable. Sometimes intense and sometimes simply funny. I absolutely love all the characters. Can't wait to continue...
This book was hard to put down. Amanda M. Lee has a way with making me laugh. I love to read books that get my emotions involved. I can't wait to read more of the books.
This is a well written and has well developed characters. The story is catching and with the strong characters makes for a very enjoyable read. Great Reading Everyone!
