More Than Human #1

Ella and the Beast

Rate this book
Series: More Than Human, Book 1

Ella is the last of a dying breed of humans that live hidden deep in the forests of Washington State. All of her life, she has heard horror stories about the Others, the beasts that live beyond the safety of the mountains. In ancient times, humans and the Others lived together in peace, but a great battle divided them and the shape-shifting species won the war.

Ty Bearclaw, a grizzly-shifter, is the curator at the Washington State Animal Sanctuary, Research, and Observation Center (WSASROC). A call from a rancher about an unusual animal causing havoc along the borders of the National Forest brings him to the Olympic Mountain National Park. Ty is furious when he discovers that the rancher has placed a trap to capture the creature on government-protected property. His shock soon turns to horror and confusion when he locates the wounded ‘animal.’
Ty finds more than he expects when a human, thought to be extinct, turns up in the trap. What is even more confusing is his bear’s reaction to the female. When word escapes about his discovery, Ty must fight to protect the unusual woman who is more than an oddity – she is his mate!

Can Ty keep Ella alive and safe from a shifter obsessed with adding her to his private collection? Not only that, can he protect her when his own government threatens to take her away from him?

4.5 ALMOST EXTINCT STARS

This was way WAY better than I expected!
LIKE THIS BOOK ROCKED!

This story was set in an alternate reality; Where The Shifters have almost eradicated the entire world population of humans. They violently overtook the world as we know it. Now, they have ruins with human remains and museum filled with human garbage.
To the shifters, humans are extinct!

description

At least that's what they all think, until Ty a bear shifter comes across an injured human woman called Ella.
One look at Ella and knows he has found his mate. And he will stop at nothing to get her, protect her and love her. But this will be an uphill battle as his kind have violently killed all of her species. There is years of conditioned distrust and fear of Shifters, that he will have to overcome.
However, he is determined to save her and even her kind.

description

To Ella it's not that simple. Letting Ty into her life could mean the end of not only her but the whole human race! His kind have killed almost all her kind and it would be an enormous leap of faith for her to even go back to civilization with him. She is reluctant to this but fate intervened and she must go with him or die in the cold of winter. As she has been exiled from her kind because she has "exposed them to danger" with the introduction of Ty and his shifter kind.

description

The odds are against them but LOVE will not be denied!
What will happen when the Community of Shifters find out about Ella and her village?
This could signify the end of the Whole Human race!?

And now I have a NEW SERIES OF BOOKS TO READ TO FIND OUT!

description

I LOVED IT!

The reason it lost .5 star is because we got way too many POV and it was a little confusing at time figure Out what was going on.

Safety; no drama, no cheating, no condoms, no triggers or elements of dubious consent.

Cute and different take on a shifter story

The hero was a bit beta but Ty was still awesome. And I think his laid back personality was required to help Ella get over her fears. Ella was brave and it was fun to see the world through her eyes.

It would have been four stars if the author continued the damn series!!
It looks like she wrote this one book and then lost enthusiasm for this world.

I thought it was pretty great. It reminded me of the history here in the US between the invading white settlers and the native Americans.

This is an alternate history book where shifters nearly decimate the population of humans 300 years earlier.
All humans are assumed to be extinct.

Hero is a Grizzly-bear shifter & director for the conservation of a national park in Washington state.
He stumbles across a human woman while performing his job. His bear recognizes her as his mate.

Contrary to popular belief, there are still some humans living in remote areas of the forest. Their lives are hard and they know they will be gone in a couple generations.

Great villains set-up as bloodthirsty shifters who want to renew “the good old days” when they could hunt & slaughter humans.

Love story, sweet HFN.

I enjoyed this book but I’m not sure I can recommend it seeing as how the author has ABANDONED the series.

Ella is one of the last humans left in the world, her species is close to extinction after being annihilated by the savage and merciless shifters centuries before. Now, her and her kind live in remote areas on Earth and keep themselves hidden. Which, is why she is in so much trouble now, caught in a trap about to be discovered by one of the beasts. Only, the beast isn't quite what she expected, he's handsome and kind...and doesn't rip her into shreds as she has been taught he will. Humans have been rediscovered by the shifters and Ella can only pray that history doesn't repeat itself.

I loved the concept of this book! It's such a reverse of the typical paranormal romance formula, instead of the shifters/supernatural creature hiding from humans, it is the other way round. Humans live in tribes and live off the land in remote forests and mountains, without shifters knowing they are there. Until Ella gets discovered by her "beast". It's a unique idea that I haven't come across before in paranormal romance and what prompted me to buy the book.

Now, to the more important question, did the book live up to my expectations? Yes and no. Yes, because I really enjoyed it, the romance was adorable and as I said, I really liked the concept behind the series. And no, because although I did like the book, it didn't really stand out as anything special, the small suspense part of the plot was wishy washy and essentially the feel of it wasn't that different from any number of paranormal romances I have read in the past.

But, this was a solid read, I liked both the main characters, Ella and Ty Bearclaw and their romance was really sweet, immediately you could tell that they cared for one another. It also had a nice amount of humour in it, some of it stemming from Ella's reaction to the modern world and some of it banter between Ty, his sister and friends. The other characters, who I guess will be having a book in the series, were also nice background dressing and definitely added a sense of familial warmth to the book.

This was a nice read and I will definitely be looking out for the next book in the series, if you fancy a paranormal romance with a little twist in it, pick this up.

This lady have a fantastic imagination!
I love many of her books.

Unfortunately not this one, not her fault thought.
I think because the story happened here, on earth instead of faraway planet some outer space out there. Where I just nod and read them all without question, hey is not my planet how did I know anything about their live?

But this one happened in here, on earth and I failed to turn off tons of question in my head!
Since when the war started? How come the human have different ethnicity? They supposed to be extinct more than 300 years ago, well European and Indian still in war at the time, and where these shifter original come from? What, where, who?
Gosh, I need a break from this.

I hope there is prequel for this series who will clear up all my questions.
Also for someone who never be in contact with modern world and very primitive, our heroine feels like a very very modern female.

Don't like that at all.

And the human's name are very current, come on Ms. Smith, you don't need weird names with funny spelling and hard to read but please, Jace, Jayden? Seriously???

Having said this, I still want to read the next book in the series, because just like emmental cheese, plenty holes but still yummy enough to enjoy it!:)

This was a good beginning to a new series and also a very different take on the usual shape-shifter story.

This is a world where the shifters rule, after massacres of all known humans hundreds of years earlier. Except for their inner beasts, the shifters now mainly live in cities and are mostly like contemporary humans. Unknown to them is a very small colony of humans living in the deep wilderness, hiding their existence all this time.

I enjoyed this book a lot. Can't wait for the next one.

A really creative twist. The world is basically run by shifters. They are all under the impression that humans are extinct. Until they stumble across a human girl. I really liked the storyline on this one. Definitely different for this genre and I liked it. I will definatley continue this series. It was priced a bit on the high side at $3.99 but I think it was worth it.

This book was the first one I read by the author, she also introduced me to the world of shifters and fated mates.
Plus here, the story is opposite to what I have read since, it is a dystopian story where the humans are near extinct, they have to hide and to stay hidden if they want to survive against the shifters species which dominate the world,
I loved this book, it opened a door on the work of S.E Smith, and I have since read all her work.
The main characters are adorable, Ella the human is strong and stubborn, when she cares, she will fight with her nails and teeth to defend who she loves.
It was also funny to see the modern world from her eyes.
Ty is a good guy, he is no alpha but will do anything to save the woman he came to care for. He has hope tha he will be able to right the wrongs done to Ella’s people centuries ago. He is kind and easy to live with, which is best to convince a scared woman he won’t eat her.
Together, they will tame their own fears and learn to know another.
The other protagonists, the friends and family of the h&H are nice people, they bring some fun and some will be featured in the next books.
There is also a little drama to add to the main plot which will continue in the series.
To me, this book was a great discovery, a very enjoyable and entertaining read.

This is a little different from S E Smiths other series and we have no aliens in this book. This book is about shifters and humans and instead of the shifters being in hiding or humans and shifters living together the final few humans left in the world (after being hunted by the shifters) are in hiding and presumed extinct. Then we have a bear shifter accidentally stumble across a human and she is his mate and this creates the beginning of a new series. I really enjoyed this book as its quite different to most shifter books out there, the characters are great and this book created the basis of a really interesting series. If you haven't read a book by this author before this is a great one to start with.

I don't know how she does it but this is another fantastic book!

This book is another long list of books that shows why S.E. Smith is on my list of must read authors. She writes books that are so fun and interesting to read that you can't put them down! This is the 1st in a new series that tells the story of humans that are almost extinct and the shifters that rule the world. It has everything you could want in a book, suspense, comedy, action, and of course lots of romance! Don't miss this one, or any of her books actually!

This was written in 2016 and the second book that she mentions at the end (Mitchell's Untamed Mate) and in several comments to readers is still not out. In her comments she had said fall of 2017. I really need to make sure series are completed before reading them. This is a standalone, but with so many references to the next book it's just not fair to the reader.

Shifter and Human relations will never be the same again. . . in this alternate reality of humans being the extinct or almost extinct species on the planet. To find a rare human and to mate with her was not heard of in this time. But Ty was not going to give up on his little human, Ella. She was everything to him. He would find her and protect her. He just had to keep her a secret for a little while.

David Brenin gives a wonderful performance and takes the characters to new heights. He makes you believe that you are right where things are taking place. You have no issues distinguishing between characters, the clarity, and smooth control.

Ella and the Beast (More Than Human Book 1)

S. E Smith

WOW! What a twist on the paranormal, humans as the hunted, with shifters as the hunters!

Following a cataclysmic event when shifters killed off all know humans, they were not seen for a long time. In fact, they were thought to be extinct! All Ella and her little band of ragtag humans wanted was to survive.

Ty Bearclaw acted like any normal male just trying to do his job and find his mate! Find his mate? Yeah in this book the shifter is the “normal” and the human takes on the characteristics of an animal being hunted. Only humans are smarter than the average animal. They have been able to live and stay under the radar out of the way for an incredibly long time. Then a stupid wolverine-shifter had decided to use a deep pit to trap whom-ever had been invading his shed. Oh he was successful alright! Only he didn’t collect a nuisance animal, he trapped Ella! Ty’s bear knew as soon as he scented Ella she was something different. When he saw her his bear knew too…she was his mate!

Trust becomes a key element in this book. Ty trying to gain Ella’s and Ella not trusting any shifter or Beast. She knew her lore and beasts were not to be trusted…or were they?

Now Im not going into what happens but if you want to read great love story, chuckle and cry along the way, then pick this book up! S E Smith has just debuted another great series in a long list. And she’s proven to me at least she can do many genres, not just Sci Fi! This is NOT your average fairy tale its so much more!

This book came out of left field for me. I was wanting a shifter romance and this one surprised me ten fold. I was drawn I'm from the start with the way this wrold was described, humans being pretty much extinct. I haven't read something like that and it was very well executed.

The characters were unique and very likable. From the start your could sense the attraction. Ella didn't have the easiest life, but did what she had to do to survive.

Ty was one hunk of a man! Wow! I loved him right from the start. He was very protective of Ella even tho he barely knew her, but that's the thing I love about paranormal, that Instalobe is ok with mates.

There were some preconceive notion's between the shifters and the humans. Overtime each was told one thing and didn't really understand until the two species came clashing together in this novel.

I really loved the mystery sounding things. I won't go into to much detail but my brain was working full force with this book.

The world that this author belt was just amazing. Descriptions weren't too descriptive but they were descriptive enough that I was able to picture myself and these little colonies that they had.

Overall I loved this entire novel I was very sad when it ended and I can't wait to read more from this author. Her writing was simple but at the same time it was phenomenal. There wasn't a whole lot of huge words that I'd have to look up it was very easy to follow and stay in the story. I can't wait for the next book! 4.5 stars #2OCCJD

Interesting enough story. It's a shifter story with a twist. In the world, the shifters are the only ones around and humans are thought to be extinct. Until one day, Ty, a bear shifter, comes across Ella, one of the few humans who are surviving in hiding, and realizes she's his mate. Ella, on the other hand, fears shifters and has been taught to hide from them all her life. So when she meets Ty, she feels the attraction, but is more worried about her life and the safety of her clan. But the pull is too much for her to resist and she ends up with Ty. And eventually into the public eye. Which turns out to be not so good for her.

This book gives Ella her happily ever after, but the troubles that knowledge of her existence causes are far from over.

Update 2025: the second book just came out recently! It's been so long i had to reread this one. I really hope this means more stories in this world are gonna happen soon.

I like the direction this new series is going. The history between humans and shifters is gruesome and sad but if shifters are the more abundant species then I can see how a society like this could happen. It'll be interesting to see how the rest of the couples deal with the challenges and adjustments with humans coming back into society. I think one of the future books should cover a different human tribe cuz let's face it Ella's people can't be the only ones left.

Reverse sci-fi: h is human survivor after shifters caused their genocide. The H finds h, takes her away from her family, but what happens back in the shifter world? The h ends up with a vacuum cleaner! Really, this is how woman are portrayed in a bright new world, let's show her how to clean? The president is a woman, but the leaders were male. Having the h chasing dust bunnies was demeaning, and lazy writing, such a shame as it could have been great.

I found the premise really interesting, I just never really felt the romance. This was like a paranormal Pocahontas/John Smith story. I picked this for a challange because of the funny/humor main tag. It was cute and there were some funny moments but I wouldn't have tagged this funny.

More Than Human #1
I'm pretty good at suspending reality when reading a book in an Alternate Universe, but I had some trouble with that in this particular instance.

The premise is that shape shifters hunted humans into near extinction hundreds of years ago and the remaining humans hid deep in the parts of the world the shape shifters left alone, the most rugged terrain, high in the mountains, deep in the wilderness… The problem is, the shape shifters all shape shift into animals. Animals that live in all of those wilderness type places. Humans live in cities. Humans group together for safety. Yet in the premise of this book, the humans who are hunted to near extinction, somehow find each other and then break into small groups to hide in the wilderness while the beasts/shape shifters grouped together in cities and develop technology the same way humans would have? Eventually give up letting their beasts rule and mostly now feel bad for making humans extinct, because they don't know about the humans that are still hiding. The humans that are now reduced to a hunter gatherer type society. Humans that are slowly dying out because as the beasts civilization spreads out, it forces the humans further into the wilderness that none of the shape shifters a live-in.

I would think that if shape shifters ruled the world, that they would be big on protecting the earth and the wildlife. I would think that technology would have developed in much different ways and that civilizations spreading would not have as great an impact on the environment as human civilizations have.

I would think that there would have originally been a reason that the shape shifters hunted the humans to near extinction. Yet that aspect is only hinted at and it's an accepted fact in shifter society that their ancestors wiped out an entire species.

I didn't have nearly as much trouble with the premise when I started reading, because I assumed that as the author progressed through the book, the premise would be explained, not just accepted. Unfortunately I was wrong about that. Oh so very wrong.

I think if I had been right about that, I would have enjoyed the book far more. But so much of it just didn't make any logical sense. And I'm not just talking about the premise. The choices the characters made, also quite frequently didn't make any sense. Especially when there didn't seem to be any reason for the decision/fear/happiness/whatever.

I do believe that this book had great potential, but I don't personally feel that it met that potential and I will not be continuing in the series.

This takes place in a world where humans are all but extinct, so I would say that the mood is dark but hopeful; it is also the problem of the piece. The pace for the relationship seems quick because the author glosses over their time apart by mentioning how much time has passed in the thoughts and conversations of the characters while including the yearning feelings for both. Our hero knows instantly in the way of Shifters, but it takes our heroine a bit longer to realize that this is no ordinary attraction. I appreciate Ms. Smith's twist on Shifter-Romance, showing the similarities and differences between the two groups and the concept of civilized vs. feral. The human feelings of fear in the story are understandable. They are "living with the results of the war" between Humans and Shifters facing the problems of finding enough food and shelter to sustain themselves while remaining hidden from the winning side in the war. The scary side of the Shifters is also believable because even domesticated animals/ pets are protective of their own and have the urge to hunt from time to time. There are people who try to humanize their "animal companions" by putting clothes on them, while on the other side of the coin are personalities who express the almost animistic traits of the hunting urge often satisfied by participating in or watching intense competition. Then there are those that take the urges to the unhealthy path of psychopaths out there, why not write "animal" ones?
Ms. Smith has taken these ideas, and ran with them. We end on a hopeful note or readers would complain (understandably), wanting their HEA. Entertaining.

So glad this is available on HOOPLA.COM for public enjoyment which is where I listened to it. It is great, as a dyslexic reader, with not much room for extras, to find free public access to audio-books as opposed to being charged extra for a situation that is beyond my control. Thanks SO much!
