Avery Shaw is a powerful woman. Unfortunately for her, the strongest weapon in her arsenal is often her mouth. She refuses to lose, though, which makes her the most dangerous woman in Macomb County, Michigan. Avery’s “never say die” attitude is always on display, even when she takes on murderers, sex scandals, missing children, a comic book convention and smarmy politicians. This three-book omnibus includes books seven through nine in the Avery Shaw series. Included are: Headlines & Deadlines, Misprints & Mistakes and Bylines and Skylines.
When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail. Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.
Received a free audio copy of this three book volume. I love AML LHH series. This was a no brainer for me to listen too. I had read these books previously. Angel Clark does a good job on the narration. For me, she is the voice of these characters. These are all smart mysteries with a snarky lead character. In these books Avery does seem to be mellowing a little. I like the mysteries in this series best but find Avery to be a little off putting at times. The author does a great job offsetting that with hilarious inner monolog and one liners. The quirky characters and side stories add to the enjoyment. I listened to all three back to back and enjoyed being back in Avery"s whacky world following her investigative reporting assignments.
I love the growth that Avery has made in this series. She is still a sarcastic wonder, but she's growing up and maturing in a realistic way that leaves you cheering her on while you laugh your head off. All three stories were amazing, as usual! Avery and Eliot are a fun couple and Jake, Derrick, Lexie, and Carly round out an excellent cast of characters. Her family is weird and wonderful and her coworkers are hilarious! Really, just an amazing series!
Avery Shaw is all kinds of annoying awesomeness. A brilliant investigative journalist, with the amazing superpower of pissing people of while reading them so well she gleens insight into their very minds. Luck, hard work, breaking and trespassing are only a sideline. Her time with Eliot how ever is very slowly turning her into an adult.
Avery is really trying to be a better girlfriend. Sometimes she just doesn't have the ability. Meanwhile, there are mysteries to solve. And a lot of laughs.
Good narration and she brings the character of Avery to life. She is one stubborn women and has a dangerous mouth speaking out against politician, murders, etc. Delightful series. Given audio for my voluntary review
While I rate most all Avery Shaw mysteries 5 stars, there are occasional discrepancies that irritate me. Or things that really bug me about relationships that don't add up. During the comic book convention, Elliott checks out another woman so much that he completely disregards Avery. Then many characters go on to minimize that and tell her how lucky she is and make that seem insignificant and unimportant. Before, Elliott mentioned in other books he doesn't even want to look or check out other women. How that suddenly changes and is made out to be no big deal really irks me. I just really hate the shift in his character that makes him seem less dedicated to Avery and that it's made out to be looked over as being okay to the point that others make it seem like the problem is her. Ugghh!
