Pretty sure this is one of my favorite sports romance books that I've read in awhile. The story had lots of great characters that you develop emotion about them. Astrid was a dorm roommate/friend who really was a great character. I loved Sledge too. Our girl suffered a lot but was pretty strong thanks to Astride and Sledge. Good story.
Overly complicated to the point of being convoluted ......
Ok, Bobbi had it rough, her father was a crazed sorry controlling hypocrite and on one hand I kinda felt sorry for her,coz honestly I can't say I have a clue as to how I'd have acted/done in her situation except despite sometimes crippling depression at times I can honestly say two things one I'd have given the pills a miss ( though everyone is different) and I'd have tried to talk to Sledge at some point.... That's what really got to me,this poor story was needlessly complicated w/nasty soon to be ex girlfriends and fights and lies.... Yes,Bobbies life had been Hell since she caved to her parents BS! But when she lied and continued to hide the truth from Sledge ( btw is such a dumb ass nick name to go by as a name) til it finally came busting from the worst possible source at the worst time,I can't say I felt sorry for her,Yes she had been victimized but when Sledge was there practically begging her love, attention and honesty she SHOULD have given it to him... Especially the honesty he deserved... I think this story could been 100% better if just all the BS lying, fights and crazy Russian gf's had been left out because as it was w/Bobbi needing to grow up a bit more and reclaim herself and pulling Sledge into things would have been enough story if hD just been worked out better w/all the obstacles they had to over come... Part me appreciates the effort but at the same time I hate the story bogged down w/ useless stuff that didn't matter while the heart of the story,Sledge knowing about the baby and finding him ( baby) was drug out to the 75% mark in the book, all the nonsense parts were drug out soo long that by the time the heart things came it it was rushed thru like it didn't matter... Sledge still loves Bobbie dearly and deeply but is hurt and confused about her lies and descriptions and of course overwhelmed about having a son and even though he's a hockey hot head who just weeks prior to Bobbies return all his life seemed to be sex, drinking, fights and hockey and he still seems to lose his temper at the drop of a hat and yet thanks to her stupidly and lies Sledge ends up looking like the mature one, while yet again her future, baby, schooling, everything ends up in so,e else's hands.. All this happens too late in the book the ends felt rushed/forced to tie everything up w/ HFN ending... Yeah, felt happy for now because every thing w/the new family still felt up in the air,no stay w/me forever,no marry me to custody talks, nothing legal w/baby or anything ,even the babies name isn't officially fixed she calls him Jake others start to nickname him like they did his father... Nothing official anywhere, you don't even see him forgive her, just that he never asks her to move our and they start to share a bed.... That's part of what pissed me off I read, read and skimmed past all the BS and her lies and stupidly and still got a crappy ended.. Guess I felt after enduring all that I deserved better... A reward.. Dumb I know ;(
Not sure if I can call that a HEA ending or not. Very amateur writing; felt as if the author lost track of their plot. Character actions didn't feel justified.
Oh my. I wanted to really like this book. Bobbi & Sledge were high school sweethearts. She gets pregnant but her Hockey Coach dad convinced her to hide the pregnancy so she doesn't ruin Sledge's chances of being drafted to the NHL. About a year and a half later, Bobbi is now at college. She was forced to give her baby up for adoption by her father. She's popping anxiety pills and keeping to herself until her roommate finds out Bobbi gets Google Alerts for Sledge on her phone. Her roommate suggests they go to the club the Sledge's hockey team hangs out at since he plays locally. Bobbi agrees to go just to catch a glimpse of Sledge. They reconnect but Sledge has a girlfriend. This is where I started to have a problem with the story. He stays with this crazy girlfriend while he's pursuing(?) Bobbi. I don't know if he's still in love with her or just hanging out with her. I didn't feel the chemistry. He doesn't even break up with the psycho girlfriend until thinks Bobbi is pregnant by Sledge and tries to push Bobbi down the stairs. There's more drama around this incident. In the meantime, Bobbi's psycho dad keeps threatening her to come home because she's a bad girl. She is required to visit her aunt on weekends but doesn't realize her aunt is caring for a baby!?! Who's baby is it? More drama happens. Bobbi is hiding from her dad at sledges. They have sex. She talks to her aunt and hears a baby cry. Bobbi rushes to her aunts house to catch her. Her aunt has her baby she thought was given up for adoption! She barely got to hold her baby before her dad made her give him up for adoption mind you. Sledge rescues her from her aunts with the baby. He realizes the baby is his. BUT!!!! He makes Bobbi leave and go back to her dorm!!!! WTF!!!! This girl has been through the ringer with her dad. Has barely touched her baby. And he's making her leave. And she agrees! HELL NO! He gives her some money and tells her he needs a few days to get to know his son! Again. WTF!!!!! It all gets weirder after that. This poor girl needs some serious therapy. I'm not going to call her a doormat because she was barely 18 when this happened. She's probably only 19 by now and doesn't know better. The story ending even feels like a HFN. I don't know. This one was just crazy to me.
Felt for Bobbi and her situation. Her character was alright. And I really like Sledge. The interactions with the little one were cute too.
Astrid irritated me. Sure, I'm all in for a friend that encourages someone out of their comfort zone but Astrid just annoyed me. She pressured the heroine on occasions and it felt like Astrid was trying to live vicariously through Bobbi. Dunno I just didn't like her.
