2.5 stars - I listened to the audio version of this book but found nothing new - understand other people's needs and then deliver, control of the body language, listening/monitoring your breath are well-known techniques.
Really helpful advice on how to be more confident in conversational situations. Better than many of the other communication/body language books I've read.
Overall, I thought this was a good book. I was able to read it front to back in 3.5 hours. There are plenty of practical tips and a lot of relatable information. It left me with a similar feeling as I get after a deep, productive therapy session. The tone of the book is conversational (which makes sense, given the subject and advice provided within). After a while of reading, though, I came to be very aware that Dr. Alison used a lot of superlatives and unnecessary anecdotes, as if the author was trying to expand the length of the book. I don't know if the book taught me anything I didn't know, but it was valuable to me to re-read some of the information. One of my favorite lines was:
Really solid entry. I can imagine this being a little higher in your ratings if you hadn't done any research into this topic prior to reading this. Nonetheless, there were definitely little pieces of information which I think we're really useful. The book is essentially split into two main aspects, confidence and self-esteem and how they both play a really important role in conversation, followed by practical steps you can apply to make yourself a better conversationalist. The narration is ok, but perhaps a slightly stronger delivery could've helped elevate this audio book a little. Otherwise, I would recommend this to someone who's never looked into this topic before. It's a good starter point before getting into other more in-depth books on this subject.
I listened to the audio version of this book on Audible.com. It's a fairly short listen at right around 3 hours. I enjoyed it because I'm naturally shy and introverted. Although I'm a lot better now than I was when I was kid, it's still a problem for me to this day. This book is good because the steps on how to improve are spelled out so specifically. It even has advice on how to use body language in a way that other people will find more friendly and inviting. It's very practical, not just theoretical.
FTC Disclosure: I was provided with a copy of this audio book in exchange for my honest review on Audible.com.
