Not your typical Amish love story. These are flawed characters struggling to overcome the emotional scars accumulated from a lifetime of dysfunction and abuse. It's gritty and harsh -- emotionally shattering in places -- but ultimately triumphant as both Bethany and Silas find their way to a full understanding of grace.
Bethany feels invisible -- especially to God. She lives to serve and submit and longs for escape. Deeply wounded, her behavior can sometimes be erratic as she flounders to make sense of her world. Silas has so much to offer but he holds back out of fear. These two made a connection when they were youngies attending singings. In fact, Silas used to single Bethany out...and then he and the rest of his family left the community. But now he's returned -- just passing through on his way to a new future. Hearts collide once again, only there are no guarantees that Bethany and Silas will be able to create something long lasting this time round either.
I don't want to say too much more about the plot, because there are things we learn about both hero and heroine that propel the plot along in surprising ways. The author digs deep into the psyche of both, successfully pulling me into their lives and making me feel a gamut of emotions that left me reeling. Tremendously touching, sensitive and ultimately hopeful.
Well, I read this book right after The Amish Firefighter. I'm glad I did, so that I could have some understanding of the community in which this book took place in. This story was very captivating, yet I enjoyed The Amish Firefighter more. The subjects covered in this story were difficult to read about, yet important. It did lend a darker feeling to the book. I am happy that things eventually worked out for Silas and Bethany, although, wow! These two people had some seriously messed up families.
The ending of the book felt a bit rushed to me and I would have loved for there to have been a bit more to the ending, such as a happily ever after epilogue.
This was a good book from beginning to end. I enjoy reading Amish stories that have a different plot and you don't know what to expect. Bethany will touch your heart and cause you to like her from the beginning. Great story!!!!

My thoughts after reading, Bethany feels as if the world is passing her by and she will never get to be a "Frau". There have been many things happening in the life of her family...A brother was killed in an accident and her mother is in a state of grieving, she wants no holidays or birthdays remembered.just let the days go forward with work and little enjoyment. Next, her father has problems and is hospitalized , they think he is getting dementia when many strange things were done with his knowlege. The family is devestated. One morning when she goes out to do chores she finds a young man asleep there. Soon she realizes it is someone she knew before , He had left the community, Silas. Ah she had such a crush on that boy,now wonder what is going to happen with him at their home looking so "Bedraggled".
Bethany wants to Love and be loved -to have a home and family of her own. She has a secret too and wants to leave the community before "Hen" gets out of jail and wants to do what he has done before to her...she is frightened and not sure how to make him stop hurting her. She feels many in authority just keep telling her to be submissive and it confuses her. BUT Silas is different and she knew him from before and feels OK around him, she is wondering if he might feel the same about her and he might be "The One". Silas has problems of his own and is scared to try and have a relationship with Bethany and stay in this place, His family was abusive and he had left it hoping for a better future. This story about Silas and Bethany is one of Love and forgiveness. This story has many a twist and just when you think you know what will happen, it moves again in a different direction. After reading this book,I am sure you will want to read more of her.
One thing I love about Laura V. Hilton’s Amish fiction is that it deals with the messiness of life, with flawed people, and with the abuses that can easily come when religion is given more power than Jesus in someone’s heart. The Amish Wanderer is a great example of all three. No Amish utopias here. Instead, these are characters with tough-to-read backstories who struggle with doubt and temptation and fear.
Silas is such a fantastic hero. He’s got some mystery to him, secrets that are revealed little by little as the story unfolds. He doesn’t always get it right but he’s got a tender heart, a winsome humor, and a gentle strength – which is exactly what Bethany needs. Despite the fact that he’s never had a consistent role model in his own family of what it means to be a godly man, a man who treats women with respect, he acts with maturity and sincerity … and he knows when it’s time to hit his knees in prayer.
For her own part, Bethany seems pretty immature and her reactions to Silas especially (the squealing, etc.) get a little tiresome, but I’m also twice her age and maybe I just don’t have the patience for that anymore lol. Bethany’s story, though. It’s gut-wrenching. It’s painful to read at times, but it’s covered in grace and handled with respect for women who have suffered the same trauma.
Bottom Line: Gritty but full of grace, The Amish Wanderer reminds us of God’s steadfast love for us even when we feel He is no longer listening. Compelling characters and a setting familiar to Hilton’s fans add to the story’s appeal, and while it does address abuse with frankness it is also quick to point to God’s mercy. While not part of an official series, it takes place following the events of The Amish Firefighter and readers may find it best to read that book first. The romance between Silas and Bethany is sweet and peppered with some fan-inducing kisses, but it’s their friendship that is the sweetest. And sweetest of all is the reminder that no matter how far from Home we wander, nothing can ever separate us from Jesus’ love.

Author Laura Hilton’s characters in her books are so relatable. You’ll find that to be true in The Amish Wanderer. Bethany Weiss is ready to leave Jamesport, Missouri, to escape the talk about her family. Silas Beiler is hitchhiking his way to Lancaster Co., PA leaving his abusive home behind. When Bethany finds him sleeping in her family’s loft, their childhood friendship is renewed. Will Bethany and Silas be able to heal from what they’re running from when secrets are revealed? Will their faith be changed and their love be strong enough to overcome difficulties? The lessons Bethany and Silas learn are life-changing. You’ll find this book to be well-written and enjoyable! I was given a complimentary copy of this book from the author and publisher.
Let me say first I apologize for not getting this review out like it should have been because I've had certain issues to deal with. What a fantastic story!!! Laura sure knows how to make my mouth fall open and my emotions come to a head. Have u ever heard this saying that sticks and stones may break me but words will never hurt me? So not true!!! Words do hurt! It's called verbal abuse and is sometimes worse than physical abuse. I strongly related to Bethany in this regard. When someone says a hurtful word it stays with us the rest of our lives and it is hard to forgive. Even when parents say hurtful words to us it hurts us as it has me. My dad was the world's worst about doing this. I don't think I have ever forgiven him to this day. Oh I try I really try but it's so very hard!!! Bethany is a really sweet girl who tries to hard and wants someone to loved her like I do. I loved Bethany from the start and I believe she still has a story to tell. It's not finished yet. As far as angels being around I believe in them whole heartedly. Angels guard us day in and day out even when we lose our way. I saw an angel after my mom passed away that same night. Silas is my hero! He's a rock for Bethany in their times of trouble He's strong and has a lot to get through before he and Bethany can really love each other like they're supposed to. I love how the Amish support each other in any event no matter what it is. To me, this is a pretty special story. It will bring you to tears in some places and in others it made me snicker. I am with Bethany. Chocolate is wonderful!!! It's a balm to sooth the broken heart and hard feelings no matter what the case may be! Chocolate is wonderful no matter what and guess what? Fudge is my favorite!!! I loved this story in more ways than one. Laura has a way with her writing that will keep you turning pages until the last one turned. Laura, i love reading your books. Will Bethany and Silas have their own story to share in the near future? I really strongly recommend this book for people who love reading Amish stories I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and all word are my own
The Amish Wanderer is a grittier and edgier Amish novel dealing with abuse- physical, emotional, and spiritual. Bethany and Silas have both experienced abuse from those who should have loved and protected them. Silas is on the run from his past and Bethany wants to be on the run to her future. This story takes place over a shorter period of time and we get both of their perspectives. There are some twists and turns this story takes, but more than anything we really get inside their heads and see what is really going on behind their actions. The feelings of unworthiness, the sense that their spirits seem broken, and both barely holding on to the thread of hope that God does really love them come alive in this very transparent read. So this story was much more of an emotional one as we watch these two grasp the love of God.
I like how the author shows the love of the Father God in her story and answers questions that we all have had or will have at some time in our lives. Like the big one; why does God allow bad things to happen? I enjoy this author’s work as she gets down to the nitty gritty of human behavior without the sugar coating or glossing over of the harder things of life.
I received a copy of this book for free. I was not required to give a positive review and the views and opinions expressed are my own.
This is my second book by this author. i will be reading more as I find them, but so far, this is my favorite. the 2 main characters had some issues to work through before they were reunited again. I don't know if there's more after this one,as a series, but if not, this will be my favorite for now. she is becoming one of my favorite authors.
Amish Wanderer by Laura V Hilton is a contemporary Amish romance and I really enjoyed it. The novel has God at the centre. God loves each and every one of us with an everlasting love but there are times when we cannot see Him. "Silence. Gott where are you? Nothing." God's silence never equates with His absence. God longs to have a relationship with us all. Sometimes we wrongly disqualify ourselves. "Gott didn't listen to her. Didn't hear her. Didn't care." We think we have to be 'good enough' and we forget about grace but "Gott has never left you." God does care and God does see and God does hear. The story shows how relationships are built between us and God and each other. Relationships may be complicated but God just wants us to have faith and trust Him. Within the tale characters are running from their past and living their lives in fear of the past catching up with them. Fear is the opposite of faith. They need to hand their fears over to God and step out in faith. The Amish community is close knit. They support each other. There is a feeling of warmth especially when the reader enters the kitchen and hears about the cookies to be baked. Life is a journey. Sometimes literally and always spiritually. The novel shows the need for roots. As we journey through life, we need to be rooted in God and we need to find a community to put down our roots. The novel deals with the difficult topics of mental illness and domestic abuse as well as rape. Laura Hilton portrays the topics sensitively. Love and care are needed by all to enable healing. I really enjoyed Amish Wanderer. It was my first novel by Laura Hilton but I shall be hunting out more. I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
We never know how someones words can hurt until its you or someone you love that is affected by them. Bethany Weiss is ready to leave her home in Jamesport, MO from all the talking about her father. Her dad, the bishop of the church in their Amish community was admitted into a mental hospital for things he had done to the community. Bethany hides the pain, she doesn’t want anyone to see how she really feels.
Silas Beiler has had a rough life, kicked out of his family’s home, blamed for everything that happens, he leaves headed for Pennsylvania. When Bethany spies someone asleep in her hayloft, she at first fears for her life and then when she sees who it is, the memories come back.
What will happen between Bethany and Silas?
The Amish Wanderer is a wonderful book, full of issues we deal with on a daily basis. Laura V. Wilton has written a great book, and she does her research on the Amish. I enjoy reading her work and can promise that you will love her newest book.
I received a copy of this book from the author and Celebrate Lit, a favorable review was not required.
"The Amish Wanderer" by Laura V. Hilton is an Amish love story. It is a clean read but it deals with a hard subject and I hope this isn't a spoiler alert but I feel I must warn that the subject is date rape. I hope this doesn't stop or discourage readers of Amish genre and fans of Laura Hilton to read this story of what God's love does when it is accepted. Yes, I admit it is hard to read these scenes but I think readers, (even though sometimes we read to escape real life) need to embrace the real ugly parts of life if it is done in a clean way and if it points us to God's love.
With all that I said in the first paragraph I must say I loved the book. Why, because it wasn't a fake story, ( yes I know fiction is fake) and the characters learn that even if God seems far away and not listening or that He doesn't care, He is with them.
Bethany Weiss has had more than her share of troubles and she thinks Gott doesn't listen to her prayers so she doesn't pray anymore and wants to leave town. Silas Beiler is trying to escape his past always. Bethany and Silas share memories of a happy summer six years ago. Can they build on that or will their secrets and what they perceive to be their faults keep their love from growing.
The theme of this story is "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39 (KJV). " I really love two quotes in the story so I am going to share them in this review, 1) "If a man speaks ill of you, live so that nobody will believe it." 2) "We get so caught up in chasing chocolate we forget that the ultimate Problem-solver is only a prayer away".
I really believe this is a story that spoke to me because of issues in my own life.
"The Amish Wanderer" is not a feel good novel from beginning to end but it does leave the reader believing in the power of love, both God's and man's.
Yes, there are characters in this story that had me thinking "Wow, why did you do that for and when I learned the reason I was liked well now I know but I still don't like it." But that is a reader's life, right?
I am giving "The Amish Wanderer" five stars.
I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.

MY REVIEW This turned out to be a very interesting story about two Amish families and what we, as 'Englischers' would think is rare in the Amish community. It took me a while to really get into the story BUT it was not the book, it was what I had to deal with in my own life during this time. Once I was able to really take a little time to read, without falling asleep, lol, I didn't want to put it down. Thank you Laura for another winning story.
Have you ever felt like life is passing you by quickly? Having a spouse? Having a home of your own? Having children? This is how Bethany Weiss feels about her life, that it's passing her by. She feels over looked by her family and community. Now that her daed, the Amish bishop, is admitted into the mental hospital; the community feels shaken. Bethany is running the family farm herself.
Silas Beiler had a rough childhood growing up. He was kicked out of his family home and has been searching for a place to call home. In searching for a home, Silas has begun hitchhiking across the country in trying to get Pennsylvania. He ends up back in Jamesport, MO.
Could the barn Silas walks in and stays in at midnight, give him a second chance? The answer to this question and more can be found by reading the "Amish Wanderer", you won't regret it.
Laura V. Hilton has out done herself in her writing. The description of details and emotions kept me on my toes and feet, with the want to keep reading to find out more about Bethany and Silas' story. I felt like I was right there in Jamesport, Missouri on the Weiss' property. So yes Laura has written a page turner of a book.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review. This is my own personal review.
Laura V. Hilton writes in a unique style that is all her own! Her newest novel, "The Amish Wanderer" grabs your attention on the first page and draws you deep within the story of two young people who are struggling with life's challenges. This is a book that you simply can't put down until you finish it! It is intense and deals with real life issues that you just don't expect in the Amish community. It exhibits Laura's deep understanding of the Amish lifestyle. Yes, they are the Plain People, with great faith and forgiveness, but they DO experience problems that are present in everyone's lives.
Both of the main characters, Silas and Bethany, were so well and realistically described, that I was easily and quickly drawn into their lives. I felt their pains and desires right alongside them . The battles of living a Christian life is felt deep within as they experience love, faith and forgiveness.
The plot moves quickly with totally unexpected twists and turns. There was such a powerful message that was underlying the entire adventure, that I found myself tensing up with my heart pounding as I travelled this young couple's journey through a difficult time . The author dealt with some sensitive, rather difficult manners with dignity and grace. The reader definitely will feel the grief, pain, as well as the hope that salvation brings.
This is definitely a five star book!! Don't miss this adventure!! This novel will live on in your thoughts long after you have finished reading it!!
This book was received as a gift. The thoughts and opinions expressed are honest and my own.
I commend Ms. Hilton for a very well written narrative that portrays social issues that have a profound affect on the reader. Characters are well defined and credible. Two young adults are caught up in their own nightmares and fear for their lives. Their connections to the past play a powerful role in their relationship to one another some years later.
Credibility is a strong point throughout this story of relationships and the circumstances that affect young lives. I found this book to be one that I read more slowly than many, due to the fact that it is a very moving and poignant representation of realistic incidents.
Ms. Hilton has raised the bar in Amish fiction. This book delivers far more depth than many traditional Amish books I've read. I highly recommend The Amish Wanderer. It's a taste of reality through the traditions of a different culture, and the reactions of the various members of their community.

THE AMISH WANDERER is another fabulous book set in Jamesport, MO by author Laura V. Hilton. It’s the story of Bethany Weiss and Silas Beiler – each with a troubled past full of hardships, pain and disappointments trying desperately to find love, peace and faith. It isn’t until they realize that God is and has always been there with them and that they turn control over to him trusting in faith that they can find true peace and happiness quite possibly with each other.
Bethany is the Bishop’s daughter and has always been under the microscope of society as such – never good enough, never complimented only reprimanded and sorely mistreated. After her Daed is sent off to the hospital with a brain tumor with a prison term likely afterwards, things in the Weiss household only got worse. She feels God has abandoned her allowing all sort of horrible things to happen from the mounting doctor and hospital bills of which they can’t pay, being forced to sell off livestock and belongings to just scrap by and the horrific attentions of Hen forced on her.
Silas is on the run. He knows what he’s running from – the rage, bad reputations and uncontrollable tempers that seem to run rampant in his family, but does he know where he’s running to? He thinks he’s headed to Pennsylvania to his Uncle’s for an education and a job. Is that the answer if his past hasn’t been dealt with? His plan was to just stop over in Jamesport for some rest, something to eat and to work long enough to restock some much needed supplies, like a new pair of shoes, for his trip. He didn’t figure to see the girl from his past – the girl he had briefly courted and who still had a hold on his heart. After seeing all the work that needed done on Bethany’s folk’s farm and being offered money to help with the repairs, it was like the answer to his prayers for his present needs. The attraction is strong and mutual between Silas and Bethany from the start. Silas fears he has nothing to offer Bethany but hurt and danger because of the past that he’s running from. Although he was once like Bethany thinking God had forsaken him, he is already on the way of understanding and accepting God’s unconditional love.
Can Silas keep Bethany safe? Can he prove to her that God loves her? Can he be the man she needs – the one to show her she is lovable and should be honored and treasured for the person she is? Can Bethany convince Silas to take her with him? Can she feel true love and leave the awful past and abuse behind her and walk into the arms of the man she really loves?
It’s through a misunderstanding that leads Silas and Bethany both leaving Jamesport, but going in opposite directions, both seeking the same thing - God’s steadfast love, forgiveness and faith that God can bring them both back to the same path.
THE AMISH WANDERER is more than an Amish love story. The author shows through her wonderful use of words that the Amish, like the rest of society, has struggles, fears and doubts. She doesn’t pull punches or sugar coat it. She keeps it very realistic which will have you smiling, crying and maybe even praying a little too. It’s through her use of scripture and storytelling that she delivers the message that God is always there with unconditional love for all of us if we will only trust in him praying to him for things to be done as to his will. It doesn’t mean life will be smooth sailing. After all, even a bed of roses has a few thorns, but God never abandons us.
Highly recommend THE AMISH WANDERER to anyone that loves a wonderful and touching story. It will show you the wonders of God’s love and the glory of faith. It is one that will having you reaching for other books by this awesome author.

My Review:
Poor Bethany! And Poor Silas!
I feel for both characters right away in Laura Hilton's latest, The Amish Wanderer.
Bethany just wants to disappear after her Daed does some unspeakable things to all the cats in the district. Not really unspeakable but a little humiliating to say the least. While her Daed is in a mental hospital paying his penance Bethany and Timothy are in charge of the household chores. While taking care of said chores Bethany makes a very curious discovery in the barn, one that send her back in time.
As soon as Silas and Bethany lock eyes Bethany knows immediately and Silas, well it took him a minute to recall who she was. Silas seemed to have other plans all those years ago. He just keeps reminding himself that he is just passing through Jamesport. Because seeing Bethany after all these years complicates things a great deal.
Laura Hilton is not new on the scene. I have read several of her books and her writing is exemplary. She gives us a captivating story line and good, solid characters. The lemonade memory is my favorite part of the story. The Amish Wanderer is a hit!
**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the author. All opinions are my own.
Bethany Weiss is a young girl who can’t get out of town soon enough. As a young woman in her early 20s, she’s suffered enough rejection for a lifetime. Her father, the bishop, is in a mental hospital after committing a crime which hurt the community and “poured more salt” in Bethany’s still-fresh wounds.
One day, Bethany finds a “stray” in her barn. At first, she thinks he is her abusive suitor, perhaps out jail. Instead, the “wanderer” turns out to be her old boyfriend, Silas Beiler.
Will this “wanderer” in her barn mean a new life for Bethany or will it mean more pain to sting her ever-freshly wounded soul?
Silas has a colorful past of his own. Did he grow up to be a man molded by the reputation of his family? Will he hurt Bethany in the unthinkable way that her abusive suitor has? Or, has he grown up to be an honorable man of God who will cherish Bethany?
Will Bethany find her way out of town – out of the circle of hurt that constantly surrounds her, leaving her to a hopeless future?
Will Bethany and Silas heal from their haunted past, their troubled present, to find a happy future together?
All the answers are within the pages of this highly recommended novel, Amish Wanderer by Laura V. Hilton.
This was the second book I've read by Hilton and I can see myself reading more. This story is set in an Amish community. The two main characters have had a very hard life. Emotional and physically they have been through some roller coasters for such young people. I love how the story focuses on how in spite of all God loves you and has not forgotten about you. Even if life is hard. Hilton weaves a salvation message seamlessly into the story which I appreciate. The characters learn about the TRUE LOVING GOD in a natural fashion. Sometimes this kind of thing can be forced but that was not the case in this book. The community included many sweet additional characters and I would love to see this turned into a series featuring a few of the characters. I feel like there is more to explore even with our main characters Bethany and Silas.
Speaking of the main characters. They were well written with a great deal of depth. You can see how their past has molded their traits and why they react to situations they way they do. All in all this was a delightful read that I really enjoyed.

Laura Hilton has done it again! She has a unique way of weaving stories that tug your heart strings but also have wisdom tucked inside. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Even if Amish fiction isn't your usual genre. I truly believe you will like it. The author makes characters that you will fall in love with and root for their success but she isn't preachy. I have to admit I was shocked at Hen's treatment of Bethany. I didn't see him taking it as far as he did. Bethany was a hoot! Poor thing just couldn't get her runaway tongue under control. I appreciated the fact she wasn't rude or disrespectful, she just shared a little too much of her heart at times. I really liked her. I felt like her's and Silas's struggles were ones everyone could relate to on some level. Maybe not the abuse they suffered but their struggling to comes to term with God's will. I believe we have all been there, maybe you're there now. I know in my life I've struggled to understand the "why" and the "what" instead of trusting "who"...God is who He says He is and praise Him He never changes!
* I was provided a free copy of this book. All opinions expressed above are my own.
This book was amazing. I just loved how Hilton told this story and how she wove God's love and forgiveness through the book. The story is about two broken people that are lost. Both are running or wanting to run from something. They find in each other a rekindled love and for the first time, security. As they grow in their relationship with God, their love for one another grows and just might lead them to happiness if they would only listen.
The Amish Wanderer deals with highly sensitive subjects but it is done tastefully and with a message that clearly tells the reader, you are never too far away from God. He is always there. Once these characters come to realize that, things begin to fall into place. I love the meeting Bethany had at the bus station. Wow, gave me chills. Bravo to Hilton. I think it is a must read. My book is autographed because I won it in a contest, but the message in it is so good, I am donating it to my library. Someone might be where Bethany was and need assurance that it is not too late for them.
This book was ok and was a very easy read, but neither of the main characters were very likable to me. Bethany was extremely childish and whiney, I get she had been through a traumatic experience, but by the time I'd found that out, I'd already stopped caring for her and her personality. Silas just came across as a whimp to me, he would rat out his family (justifiable so, granted) but then up and run away instead of manning up and handling the consequences. And this back and forth with them was exhausting. Once second they were madly in love making out, the next they were planning on leaving each other. I also thought the ending was very cheesy and cliche. Bethany's mom suddenly disowns her and says she's not her real mom, out of the blue? And Silas is able to find Bethany even after she ran away and nobody knew to where? I love Amish books, and it's a romance novel, so of course I expect it to be somewhat cheesy, but this was just to much for me.

Book Description:
Desperate for a Ticket Out
Bethany Weiss is ready to leave town. Tongues haven't stopped clacking in Jamesport, MO, since her daed, the bishop, was admitted to a mental hospital after hurting their small Amish community. But her sharpest wounds Bethany hides from prying eyes, quietly biding her time until she can take a chance at a new life—away from Jamesport and away from God.
Searching for a Home
Silas Beiler was kicked out of his own family's home. Dogged by a rough childhood and a family who blames him for each new disaster, he begins hitchhiking across the country, sleeping in barns where he can, working for food when possible—headed for Pennsylvania, in the hope of some stability.
A Memory of Lemonade
When Bethany spies a man asleep in the hayloft, she first fears the return of an unwelcome suitor. But when it is Silas who turns and speaks, the memories flood back: a happy summer six years ago full of lemonade, long walks, and budding courtship. Now, however, those months of bliss seem naïve and idyllic. Will their old love overcome new pain? Or will hurt and rejection continue to haunt their path?
My Thoughts:
Amish Wanderer is the latest book by Laura V Hilton and it is great! I had the pleasure of reading her other book, The Amish Firefighter so I was was excited to read this one. The two books are set in Jamesport, MO. Laura V Hilton writes with authority about the Amish Faith, Amish Communities especially Jamesport MO, family dynamics including child abuse, loss of a child, putting up appearances, and mental health issues. I truly enjoy Laura V. Hilton's writing style. She grabs a hold of her readers from start to finish. Her ability to seamlessly transition between past and present is one not many can do. The characters in this book are real people, going through real life issues we all have had to. My favorite character would have to be Bethany Weiss. She finds that the sins of the father have been visited by the children. She does everything she can to help her family survive while her Father, a bishop, is in a mental hospital. Her Ex-fiancee is in county jail, looking at being bailed out. Bethany has been through abuse physically and mentally, also rape. She does what she needs to survive but can't wait to get out of Jamesport. She holds her head high as she can, grieves for her brother who died, and her father. Bethany is silently strong, loves people fiercely, and has a beautiful heart. I related to her in many ways. I also could relate to Silas given his families secrets and the one blamed for every family disaster. These two broken characters find comfort in one another. I loved finding new characters and being able to find out what characters from the first book are doing. I loved being a part of Sam and Abigail's wedding. I honestly could not put this book down. I found myself chuckling in parts and crying in others. I cannot say enough good about this book and this author. Each of the books are stand alone books but I did like the fact that I read The Amish Firefighter first because I felt like I wasn't missing anything. I HIGHLY recommend these books and this author to anyone who enjoys Amish Fiction, you will not be disappointed. I give this book 5+ STARS.
This is not your typical Amish Fiction Book. It deals with the tough subject matter of abuse in a sensitive and caring way. Bethany and Silas are each dealing with a different form of abuse and family problems and both see the answer to their problems is to flee. Bethany feels like God has abandoned her and Silas is growing and seeking in his faith. These characters are very real in their reactions and it is wonderful to see their growth. Laura V Hilton writes great character development in an intense and flowing way. This book is intense and doesn't disappoint. I didn't want to put it down until I saw the outcome. I received a complimentary copy from the author and CelebrateLit. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
This is my first book by Laura V Hilton. The Amish Wanderer is a book with many emotions with lots of intense feelings. Laura Hilton delivers on this book you will be hooked by the love that grows between Bethany and Silas and at the same time wonder if that love can ever survive there terrible past. Both these characters have a long twisted journey that this author weaves us into and before you know it you will not want to put this book down. I would recommend this book, however it's not for everyone as it does have some grafic realistic parts that unfortunately does happen in real life. I did appreciate this as I know there are people who survive this. I look forward to reading more by this author!
Another great story written by Laura V. Hilton. I love reading her books never a let down of a sweet inspirational romance. characters are well written. story of abuse, shame and forgiveness! Bethany is wanting to leave town so she doesn't have to marry a abuser. All she can think of is getting out of Jamesport and God as far as she can. Then Silas returns to town and is willing to work for a place to stay and some pay. Running from his own problems to get as far away from his family as possible. To start a new life. But working for Bethany's family brings back old feelings they had between them. But something is holding him back. can they overcome all that is going on and reunite? Wonderful book.
This book was intense. Laura Hilton delivered an action packed read that I totally did not expect. This book was powerful. Packed full of suspense and twists and turns that I didn't see coming I just could not put it down. There were parts in the story that took my breath away.
The book deals with real life issues and the characters come to life in the story. Ms. Hilton takes on some very difficult topics and weaves them into a tapestry of grief, pain, salvation, and hope. This story was wonderful and so different from the books I normally read. I will definitely be picking up more of her books!
Jamesport, Missouri holds no joy for Bethany Weiss or Silas Beiler. These two young Amish adults share a past youthful friendship. Their lives and emotions have been put to the test at such a young and impressionable age.
Bethany has suffered from mental and physical abuse at the hands of her family and a young man from the community who listens to the every word of Bethany's strict dad who is the local bishop. His word is obeyed without question. Bethany will do anything to leave Jamesport as soon as possible.
Silas Beiler has seen and suffered from physical abuse in his own home and yearns to move to Lancaster, Pennsylvania to start over fresh with his onkel.
These two wounded souls find strength in each other and more important a fresh faith in God.
Laura Hilton does not shy away from writing about tough subjects that are in society today. This is not your typical feel good Amish story but its a great story of hope, strength, faith and perseverance. Your heart breaks for these two sweet Amish youth and you also rejoice with them for the future they decide upon.
I thought this was a good book. The author grabbed me on the first page and kept me going as I wanted to see what was going to happen next. It was interesting how the author took an common tragedy and wove it into her story to see how the Amish handle it. The characters were very well developed. There was a lot of things going on in this story which helped the book to move along nicely. I look forward to more books by this author.
