This is one of the best novels I've read in a while. It's one of those books which you start reading and then forget about everything else. As the plot thickens, you will find yourself more and more intrigued, and won't be able to wait until it ends. Beautifully written, this book is a whole package, with suspense and mystery at the center of it. I loved all the characters, in fact, I loved everything about this book.
Charlie thought her mother was paranoid but she is in for a surprise. Apparently everything she knew about her mother and herself was a lie. Things are far more complicated. Now that her mother is gone she will learn things about her family she had never imagined. Soon she finds about her father. Who was not only a good person but he also left her a home.
Jaxon is her father's adopted son. Jaxon never knew about Charlie and he is unhappy to find her is understatement. He doesn't trust her and want her out of his adoptive father's business as soon as possible. But for the next year he has to deal with her presence. He needs funds which Charlie now has. Soon she might grow on him...
And then there is the mystery of her mother's family, why her mother left home, why she kept her hidden, lived as illegal immigrants? There is so much yet to be revealed.
This book kept me turning pages. I couldn't put it down. It's a must read for all book lovers. Definitely a five star novel!

An awesome read! Kept my attention and couldn't put it down! A little romance with lots of thrills, suspense and a twisted mystery plot. Meet Charlie Gomez who learned just before her mother's death that they were not illegal immigrants but actual US citizens. Her mother had been hiding them from someone in her past and now Charlie has to find out who and why? When Jaxon Roberts, the adopted son of her unknown and recently deceased father tracks Charlie from Los Angeles to New York to present her with papers from her father's lawyer. She is then off to Houston to find out more about her mother's past and discover the identity of El Diablo, her mother's worst fear! Taking a job with Jaxon in her father's private investigation firm will give her training and job skills that she desperately needs. The characters and background theme are very well done. Riveting suspense and action will keep you turning the pages as Charlie deals with a new life. The hidden enemy is closer and more dangerous than she could have ever thought. This a read that I highly recommend and I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Family Illusions ( A Hidden Dangers Novel-Book One), by Bess George, introduces the reader to Charlie Gomez who is cleaning rooms in a seedy Los Angeles hotel in order to eke out an existence. Raised by her mother and told that they are illegal immigrants, she has learned to survive by being inconspicuous. Charlie's discovery of documents proving they are not illegal immigrants and that her mother's real last name is not Gomez reaffirms her belief that her mother needs psychiatric help. Sadly, that help does not come in time. Private detective Jaxon Roberts has been looking for Charlie for a long time and once he finds her he delivers a bombshell. He is the adopted son of Charlie's biological father and he has inherited their father's cash strapped agency in Houston. Charlie has inherited the house her parents had once lived in. Charlie relocates to Houston and tries to unravel her mother's secrets. After securing an entry level position in her father's firm the relationship between Jaxson and Charlie is rocky, at best, but that changes over time. Jaxon is not the only one who has been looking for Charlie. Charlie learns she has Miami relatives on her mother's side who have their own reasons for finding her and those reasons put her life in danger. Charlie's life changes radically. Where will all this lead?
The author accomplished a great deal in this well crafted story. She brings to the reader twists and turns, heart pounding action, romance and well drawn characters. I can highly recommend reading this book!

“Family Illusions” is the first book in the new Hidden Dangers romantic suspense series by award winning author, Bess George.
Charlie Gomez grew up believing that she was an illegal immigrant. Her mother had taken off when she was pregnant with her because she was afraid of “El Diablo.” Charlie believed that this man was probably her father. Charlie’s mother also seemed to have mental health issues, so she was never sure what was real or what was a delusion. One thing Charlie knew for sure was that her mother loved her and they had to work hard to keep from being caught. Charlie just wasn’t sure if the fear should be of being caught by immigration or of El Diablo. After her mother passes away, Charlie begins to get answers, and what she learns is surprising, disturbing, and she doesn’t know who she can trust.
When Charlie learns that her natural father left her mother his house, she decides to try to get more information about her mysterious family. Everything she learns is completely different from what she was told. She also quickly discovers that her life is in danger. When Charlie meets her father’s adopted son Jaxson, neither one is able to trust the other. However, their attraction to each other is undeniable. In time, they have to work through their differences in order to protect Charlie from her real enemy, who will stop at nothing to gain possession of her.
Family Illusions is a fast-paced romantic suspense. The main protagonist Charlie is extremely likeable, and her character developed so well, I felt like I really knew her and wanted to see her come on top. Some of her antics were hysterical, which helped lighten the drama. The romantic hero can be dark and brooding, but his past explains a lot about why he developed the way he did. His loyalty to friends and family shows that he is a man of integrity. His chemistry with Charlie was felt burning through the pages of the book.
I really enjoyed being caught totally off guard with this story. “Family Illusions” by Bess George is highly recommended reading for fans of romantic suspense. I also think it would be a great choice for women’s reader groups because lively discussions are sure to follow.

A nice, entertaining read
Family illusions is a thrilling read with a nice plot and gripping moments towards the end to keep readers well entertained.
The story revolves around Charlie Gomez, a simple girl trying to make ends meet living in one of the slum areas in Los Angeles. Little did she know that she is actually the granddaughter of a prominent business figure in Miami, albeit one involved in shady and illegal trade. This mob-like atmosphere was the main reason her mother went into hiding years ago, away and in seclusion from her grandfather. Unfortunately, fast forward to the present time and her grandfather has tracked Charlie down, determined to bring him back and apply the same terrifying controlling nature on her. It will take every ounce of Charlie's willpower, together with her unapproving but totally handsome boss Jaxon, to get out and be free from her grandfather's clutches. Will she succeed?
Charlie is a real joy to read. She started poor and when her financial condition eventually got better, her persona and character -- from her tall, clumsy yet likeable disposition to her steely determination remained constant and never wavered. On the other hand, Jaxon was more straightforward -- his take-charge, no-nonsense attitude was in full display from the onset. This was perhaps the trait that made it most difficult for him to adjust to Charlie. Partly she cannot stand her stubbornness, but he cannot deny his feelings for her. Eventually, they blended and what transpired was wonderful chemistry and something special between the two.
The story was enjoyable and it got more intense towards the end. The pace was just right and there were no boring moments. I was puzzled on certain parts of the story and personally felt the overall investigation aspect of the story can be strengthened further. However, these are not major deal breakers and do not take anything away from the value of the story. I also believe this is foremost a romance story with the investigative aspect a secondary element, though not to take anything away from the author, her research on this is clearly evident.
All in all, I enjoyed every minute of reading Family Illusions -- a much welcome relaxing read. Recommended to all romance readers out there.

This is the first time I have read a Bess George book, and I was drawn in from beginning to end. She has a wonderful ease about her writing that is intriguing, informative, and very enjoyable. This modern tale of family revalations and romance was a pleasure to read. Her characters are complex and yet very real. They have believable strengths and weaknesses, and I enjoyed learning about their world through different point of views. I truly look forward to reading her future works.
Charlie is the heroine and comes from what she thought was an illegal background only to find out part of that isn't true. She still has suspicions about the rest due to her Mother's confusing rambling. Once her Mom passes, she ends up on a quest for the truth through some of her own efforts and those of others. She is mostly a very strong character with few wishy washy moments. I appreciate the times when after she starts to go down that path, she quickly talks herself up to be stronger. Along the way we meet the Hero, Jaxson. He certainly starts off as anything but as he struggles to cope with the loss of his father and discovery of Charlie. I thought the emotions of jealousy and anger were realistic and the gradual softening played well. I found it interesting that he had more self doubt throughout this book than his female counterpart, very unusual. He ends up being a soft hearted, loyal, and caring man after she gets through his gruff exterior. The heat of this novel was about 1.5. Not because there was any lack of chemistry, but because it was very clean.
There was only one situation where I felt Charlie couldn't possibly have not figured a situation out, and where Jaxson's logic was annoying and perplexing. Therefore giving it a 4 1/2 vs 5 stars. Overall it was a great read with excellent editing and relatable characters. I definitely recommend.

Family Illusions by Bess George was an intriguing read that took me right into the pages of an unexpected plot. Charlie has no idea what she's set in motion with what she does with some papers she finds that her mother has hidden. Then the death of her mother sends Charlie to places she never dreamed she'd end up, living a life she didn't think she'd ever have, finding people she never knew existed and a part of her that was always missing. When Jaxon appears in Charlie's orbit, there is a lot of tension between them, but circumstances keep them together. Unanticipated feelings simmer beneath the surface, and just as they bubble up and the future looks hopeful, the secrets and danger surrounding Charlie come bursting out...There is still a battle to fight and difficult decisions to make, for both of them.

Horrified because it could happen, and Bess George writes this plot in a realistic way. I could feel the evil in some characters and the hopelessness in others. Horrified because it could happen, and Bess George writes this plot in a realistic way. I could feel the evil in some characters and the hopelessness in others. I liked how she drew the mystery, tension, and what could happen next out, as we watched Charlie live her life at the same time.

Charlie Gomez has not had an easy life with her mom, Elsa. Charlie believes that Elsa suffers from delusional paranoia as she has always been looking out behind her and worried about El Diablo. When Elsa dies, Charlie and her best friend Jasmine move to New York City but they haven't left everything behind.
Jaxon Roberts has a Private Investigator and has been running his adopted father's business. His father, Charles, never got over being left by Elsa and always believed the best about her. When Jaxon tracks down Charlie after the death of Charles, he hoped she would just take the money and leave but Charlie wants in on the family business.
When Jaxon isn't the only one to track Charlie down she realizes how right her mother was and that maybe she was better off when she was hidden. When Charlie disappears will Jaxon discover the truth?
I enjoyed this book and some of the twists and turns that we saw happen. I liked Charlie and really liked how she realized at the end how genuine her mom was and why they lived the way that they did. It was super sad but as a mom I do understand. I also loved how Charlie couldn't have things go right with the simplest of everything - she and working just did not go well together and it wasn't on purpose.
I think Jaxon was right to initially be hesitant towards Charlie but he kept up his guard for so long and then just gave up. I loved his friendship with Tony and I'm glad Tony understood what was going on!
The stuff with Charlie's other family was horrifying and I understood where Alberto was coming from initially and then the change in him at the right time.

This is a great book by Bess George about Charlie who recently found out that she is not an illegal immigrant yet her mom is hiding from the devil and she feels her mother's mind is not as it should be. She wants to get her mother help and knowing they are not illegal immigrants pushes her to reach out. When her mother passes away she realizes she is being followed and then we find out the person who is following her is Jaxson, who was raised by her father who also passed away. Charlie learned that her father was always searching for her mother yet did not know why she ran away. Her father owned a business which she was entitled to a part of it and she told Jaxon she wanted to work with the company. Her cousin, Alberto, comes to visit her and tries to talk her into going back home with him to see her grandfather, however, she has just started working at the company and does not want to leave. This is a great story that will take you along with it, the closeness of the people in the company, Tony (who you will fall in love with), Zoe, Sammy, etc. Until the day Charlie is kidnapped and Jaxson finds a letter turning her part of the company over to him. He isn't sure what to think at this point until Tony tells him that she would not have packed everything and left her mothers pictures. Then they learn where she might be yet is there a chance that they could save her without getting themselves killed? Does Jaxon want to jeopardize the people he works with and chance losing some? Could this be a set up? Great read

Never having a true job, most of her previous jobs were under-the-table cleaning jobs, Charlie negotiates with Jaxon to start at the bottom of the company and work her way up.
Jaxon loved Charles, the man who saved him from the streets when he was child. Convinced Charlie is hiding something, he agrees to her terms so he can keep an eye on her. When people show up claiming to be related to Charlie's mother and Charlie's house gets ransacked and she gets attacked, both Charlie and Jaxon put their differences and suspicions aside to help each other figure out what's going on.

This was my first time reading anything by Bess George, and it certainly won't be my last. I'm really looking forward to seeing what's to come in the Hidden Dangers series.

If you like romantic suspense, this is a wonderful book! So well-written that after I started it, I could not put it down and would have stayed up all night to finish it if that had been necessary. As characters, Charlie and Jaxson are a pleasure to get to know and their love for each other is powerful against many odds and appealing. Both having hungered all their lives for the traditional concept of family, but each having grown up in a much more painful situation, they learn the true heart-deep meaning of who is family and how much of their hearts they are willing to risk. Charlie starts out as a young woman very damaged by the life she's been forced to live and blossoms into a beautiful, funny person who has learned to accept and believe in herself. Jaxson is strong and honorable but so protective of his heart that his eventual trust is a joy. The initial conflict between them and the damaging and dangerous life situations they came from create suspense until the end. I cannot recommend a book any higher than this one!

THIS BOOK IS A SAVIOUR
Family Illusions is a mind-wrecker: I couldn't keep mists out of my eyes, couldn't calm my pulse raising, couldn't control my teeth gritting, couldn't calm my hands trembling to turn over pages. The book is a sail through a stormy sea with a bright sunshine for an end!
The book started out humbly. Characters were introduced in a fast-paced manner but the author, Bess George, was able to tell so much about every character with just a glimpse.
This book must also belong to the Mystery and Thriller shelf! One can extract many invaluable things out of it and this might have the ability to bring something good out of someone. I was able to reflect while reading, to be honest.
My verdict: minor typographical errors are present but the goodness of the story dominates the entire book. Two thumbs up for Family Illusions and for Bess George. Can't wait for your next one!

What a great first book in the series! Very impressive. The suspense and action keep you on your toes while the romance has you smiling. Charlie had lived with a mother full of fear and paranoia her whole life. When her mother passes on she finds out that maybe she should have stayed hidden. Jaxson was adopted by a father she never knew. She is now the heir to her father's business. Jaxson is not happy about this and sparks fly. In between this she meets family and the big action begins. Betrayal blindsides her. Can she escape and recover? Will Jaxson find and save her?. It's a powerful read that is a must read!

A really interesting read that holds you from beginning to end. The characters are unique and have great interactions and connections. This story is full of determination, fear and desire. This was a new author for me but I look forward to reading more of their work in the future.

This is a really enjoyable and entertaining book. Its so skillfully written. The plot very interesting. The characters are so appealing. It has intrigue, suspense, humor, romance, mystery etc. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

This was an okay read! I really liked Charlie she was a really well written character, I loved her determination and stubbornness and her stutter from being nervous was a cute flaw. Actually I liked almost all of the characters in this book they were well written and very likable (Tony was another favorite!). The story line was very interesting and kept me turning pages so I could see what happened next, the addition of the little PI subplots were a nice addition to the main plot. The only thing I wasn't the biggest fan of was the ending, it felt kind of rushed but it didn't ruin the book for me.
All in all this was a good suspense book and I would recommend it for fans of the genre. Don't expect too much romance though as there wasn't too much of that, not a problem for me but others might expect to see more romance.

If wishes were horses, I'd rather WALK.
Poor Charlie Gomez. Not because of being unloved but she's well, poor. Her mother has convinced her they're illegal aliens and she grows up an undocumented worker. She believes her mother to be slightly schizophrenic as she cautions Charlie about El Diablo. When she locates some papers to get her mother help, Charlie inadvertently is 'on the radar' for the first time.
This plot and the characterization felt very real. I could imagine this happening.

He finds her and she is not interested t first, however she drives a bargain he can't resist and their working together life begins. The heat also begins, and when trouble comes following her can he save her?

This story will keep you engaged and turning the pages with a riveting story line full of suspense and surprises! Although I have not had the pleasure of reading anything by Bess George before this one, I can tell you that she will be on my must read list now! This is one of the best romantic suspense's I have read in a long time!
Charlie is a young lady that has always had just what she needed. Her mom provided for her and gave her what she needed, but they were not well off at all. Charlie's mom raised her as an illegal immigrant all her life and she believed nothing else. When her mother suddenly passes away, Charlie begins to learn all sorts of truths that her mom had hidden from her to protect her, or so her mom thought.
When Charlie finds out that her real father has passed away and has left some stuff to her mom, she has to go and take care of those things now that her mom is gone. Charlie meets Jaxon, the man that her father adopted and cared for. Charlie is a little bitter about this whole situation because why couldn't her father take care of her if he adopted Jaxon and cared for him? Why Charlie is trying to figure things out , she and Jaxon enter into a business agreement that infuriates him. Jaxon does not want to have to spend any more time with her than he has to, let alone be business partners with her!
As things progress and Charlie figures out more and more of the truth of her past, Jaxon begins to change his attitude toward Charlie and they begin to get along. When Charlie comes up missing, Jaxon is stuck between a rock and a hard place, or is he really? You need to read this great story that will have you on a roller coaster right along with all these characters as they figure out what Charlie's past has to hold. Bess George has done a great job with this one and I can not wait for the next story in The Hidden Dangers Novel Series. Great job Bess George!

Jaxon sought out the heir, but she was thinking someone was after her. Little did she know he was the least of her troubles.
While Charlie was trying to adapt to her new life she starts to be threatened, then is kidnapped.
Will Jaxon be able to save her or will he be glad she is gone.
This story is full of drama and tension and will hold your attention.

It's safe to say everyone knows I have an obsession with books covers. They're important because they set the mood for the novel and this cover is a perfect example of that! Immediately, I was drawn to this book. I didn't have to read the description to know this was going to be a suspenseful mystery because the cover already told me so. Excellent choice, Ms. George! The style and image create an exciting gateway to the suspenseful like SERIOUSLY SUSPENSEFUL journey Bess George has written for us! Jaxon and Charlie both have incredible, well developed backstories that MAKE this novel what it is... A mind twisting work of fiction that will keep you glued to it's pages until you hit that glorious finale! The characters, as I've said, are wonderful. They're real, easy to relate to, and just over all very strong fictional characters. It was easy to feel attached to them and their stories both as individuals and as partners on this twisted, investigative journey. I felt this work was of a fast pace. There was a lot of questions that popped into my mind while reading it, so I was desperate to keep scrolling until they were all answered. The series "A Hidden Dangers" is going to be a very successful string of fiction if the rest of the novels are even half as capturing as this one! Well done, Ms. George and please please please keep up the good work!

Family Illusions is the first book in the Hidden Dangers Novel series by Bess George. Ms. George skillfully delivers a story filled with intrigue, suspense, romance, action, family secrets, and mystery. As you read the tension and drama within the plot are palpable. The characters are well developed within a tightly woven plot and an undercurrent of unanticipated twists and turns. Imagine being raised as an illegal immigrant living in the shadows even though you are actually a natural born citizen. That is the life Charlie lived. What information has been hidden? Why? Who is El Diablo and why did her mother fear him? As Charlie embarks on her adventure and search for answers she wants to become a part of a private detective firm, McKenzie Investigations, now owned by an adopted half-brother through adoption.
As Charlie learns more about her past and future life a hidden, extremely dangerous enemy lurks close by. This a book that I highly recommend and I can't wait to read the next book in the series as there are many directions Ms. George can take this series. A must read for everyone who appreciates a superbly written romance suspense thriller.

I loved this story! It's a very good romantic suspense book. The story focuses a lot on family. First, Charlie's family is her mother, who is paranoid, but raises her to be a hard worker and kind. Then, she learns about other family, her unknown father, who raises an adoptive son, Jaxon, who originally was living on the streets. As she gets to know the people from the detective agency she works at, they become family. Meanwhile, her mother's father and cousin find her and try to get her to come live with them. She doesn't know they are mobsters--the reason her mother was on the run for so many years. It's an exciting story, with all kinds of twists and turns. It's unique in the type of person Charlie is, growing up streetwise, but kind-hearted, and the fact that she's done many different jobs and is ready to settle down into one occupation, the investigation business. It's funny with all the mishaps she has with the job. But then, it's serious when dealing with her family. I enjoyed reading this book...there is a lot to it. It's in-depth with relationships and letting the reader get a sense of what's going on in her mind and her love interest's mind. It's a beautiful romance. Thanks to the author or publisher for providing the copy in exchange for an honest review. I highly recommend Family Illusions.

Charlie Gomez has been living the lifestyle of an illegal immigrant, but discovers that her mother perpetrated the lie. In an effort to get her ill mother the help she needs, Charlie unknowingly sets off a chain of events that threatens her life. When Jaxon Roberts, private investigator and adoptive son to Charles McKenzie, delivers a surprising message, Charlie has an unexpected future plan with which to look forward. When things go awry, will Charlie's worst fears be realized?
Family Illusions can definitely be categorized as a romantic suspense, but I was pleasantly surprised that it falls more to the side of suspense. In some ways, the book is the typical "boy meets girl, girl has a problem that the boy tries to solve and they fall in love," but both the characterization and the plot keep it from being just another romance. Charlie is spunky and resourceful, but it bothered me that this streetwise young woman did not take steps against the perceived threat. There were holes in the plot where the author advanced the story in implausible ways. Overall, readers who are fans of romantic suspense may feel that the romance portion is a bit light and that the suspense portion carries the book forward.

Reading this book was in interesting experience. While I was interested in the storyline of Charlie Gomez's life unfolding before me, and I was interested to find out where this fairytale romance would lead, there were a lot of things that spoiled the journey for me. I liked Charlie's grit and determination to make the most of her life after she inherits a home and a business from a father she never knew. I liked her sincere desire to learn a business so she could take care of herself. I really liked the way she threw herself into learning about the process of being a private investigator, even when her instincts got her into lots of crazy trouble. But when Charlie's adopted brother turns out to be mean and spiteful toward her, before magically falling in love with her, the bloom was off the rose. I'm not a fan of hulking, bossy, mean spirited heroes, and the sudden turnaround happy ending left me feeling cold. I think with some much needed editing, and some much needed revisions I could genuinely like this book, but right now it's just okay. I give it 3 & 3/4 stars. Ahhh Charlie and Jaxon, how I love thee. Charlie had a difficult childhood, being led to believe they were illegal immigrants and living with her mother (Elsa) with a mental illness. Jaxon's childhood was different after he was taken in by Charles, Charlie's biological father. With Charles and Elsa both gone, circumstances have Charlie and Jaxon meet and Charlie gets herself a job in Jaxon's business. Jaxon is not happy but needs the money so has to go along with the deal. Charlie starts to learn all about her Father and the wonderful things he did.
But then there is her mother's family, who are looking for her too. So why did Elsa leave this seemingly perfect family? Why did she hide Charlie and live like illegal immigrants? It turns out they are very dangerous people and the mystery is fascinating.
The book is full of suspense, mystery, friendship and romance! Definitely worth reading. Fantastic story and I'm looking forward to the second book in the series!
