Payne has written a definitive analysis of the first person shooter games and connected their popularity to American culture after 9/11 and a need to create opportunities that engage citizens in what he refers to as "sacrificial citizenship." He combines a historical and textual analysis approach with that of ethnography to paint a picture of the games and the players as one that is complex and of vital interest to the "militainment complex." It is a fabulous piece of scholarship that should lead to new discussions and questions about the role of military video games in America and their influences on the citizenry.
