Geeky vampire Ginger Davenport is just an ordinary college student with a small group of friends and a mundane life that offers little in surprises. Prone to internal tangents and over-analyzing situations, she likes her habitual routine, as it doesn't disrupt her reclusive and book-wormish ways. What Ginger doesn't expect is to be thrown into a whirlwind adventure helping Dracula on a personal mission. However, circumstances thrust her into this escapade, which is rife with dangers such as fallen angels and ghouls. Ginger's only hope to succeed will be if she employs the aid of her two best friends, a werewolf and the king of the dragons. The biggest question she must face is if she will be able to aid Dracula and complete the mission, or will her over-the-top sarcasm and wit finally be the weapons of her own downfall?
I picked up this book on a whim. I'm so glad I did. Why Me? has everything. Vampires, Werewolves, Dragons, Gnomes, Fallen angels, and a Unicorn Centaur. Its all covered. Ginger Davenport is a Vampire who loves to read, is incredibly snarky, everything Vampires usually aren't. I totally related to her. Her best friends are a lavender Werewolf and the Dragon King. Her life is simple and mostly uncomplicated. Chaos ensues when Dracula... yes the Dracula makes an appearance in Ginger's life. Dracula has a mission for Ginger and only she can accomplish it. Ginger must leave her comfort zone and face things she never dreamed of. I can't wait to read the 2nd book in this series.
There are so many aspects that I enjoy regarding this book. First off, I really like a book where you can feel that an author has so much enthusiasm in what they're writing. You can clearly sense that this author most likely had as much fun writing this as I did reading it. It is also clear that real life human qualities are gathered from the real world, spun around an entire 360 degrees, and then placed in a paranormal setting in order to offer a good deal of adventure to what would have felt like a normal life without it!
The characteristics given to this book's characters are genuine. I feel it is easy to find a connection with one of the handful of interesting characters (not to mention all the types of characters since is one hell of a variety). Personally, I found my connection with the sarcasm delivered by Ginger on many accounts--along with her love for books. I will say that one thing I hope for is more developments for the characters. They were all beyond interesting and thought out well, so now I want the adventures to continue so we can learn so much more about many of them and the life they live. I feel so many things can be brought to attention in order to create a spark with new waves of thinking for the author. With those sparks of thought who knows what else could happen! I really think there is a good amount of room left for so much more to occur. While I do realize this is the Author's first book, I know that now she will hopefully continue to experiment with her many methods of creativity and where it can take her.
The humor and banter that are present are guaranteed to leave some smiles on your face as you read. One of my favorite genres to read is anything with a paranormal element. Something new was definitely offered in this book. The comical element was an amazing addition and I really enjoyed the twist it offered. After reading this, I do know that I would like to see a variety of different genres and ideas from Ms Stevens. Don't get me wrong, I very much appreciated this well thought out humorous paranormal giggle factory. However, I deeply feel this author also has an ability to offer a range of writing talents. I can not wait to see what other books she puts out into the world of writing. There is no doubt in my mind that Author Lydia Stevens will continue to surprise us with books that are well worth a read!
Author Lydia Stevens has called her writing “cheeky, geeky supernatural tales.” Reading “Why Me?,” the first in the Ginger Davenport Escapades, you understand the moniker. Although it may not fit your usual vision of a New Adult novel, the humor in sexual innuendo among the twenty-something characters puts the book in this category. Bibliophile, recently turned vampire Ginger narrates the story in first-person, present tense hyperactivity. Ginger lives in a modern-day world where supernatural creatures are understood as part of society, but she hasn’t fully embraced her vampire nature. She admires the qualities and abilities of her friends—a purple werewolf, a dragon king, a unicorn centaur, an elf, and a spiritual human—but has to be reminded that she has a bat form and useful fangs. Content to focus on her university studies and the latest book release while confining herself to her apartment and favorite book store, she reluctantly responds to a summons from Dracula. When her friends are threatened, Ginger springs into action—even when it involves a fallen angel, cow poop, a dead ancestor, and duels with bows and arrows.
Ginger takes us on a wild ride inside her stream of consciousness thought processes, broken up by the barbs she exchanges with her mind-reading buddy Gareth--the attractive and aforementioned dragon king located firmly in the friend zone. The story reaches its conclusion essentially where it began—with its nose in a book—but promises a new adventure with the sequel.
For a very first book the writing is fun, the storyline kept me interested, and the characters were developed enough, but leaving room for growth. The main character is a bit older than most books of this genre so the fun, witty, slightly off kilter future is interesting even to a broader audience.
I enjoyed the phrases, the banter, the relationships. A bit of mystery surrounding each of the different creatures - I wonder what prompts their attitudes about each other, when the 'norm' seems to hold to some stereotypes that would keep them separated.
As a new young author there is potential here. I look forward to seeing how the characters lives unfold in the next books in the series. I imagine Ms. Stevens has an entire universe in her head that we will have an opportunity to discover.
