Labradoodle and Labradoodles, by Susanne Saben, is a fantastically conceived guide to the Poodle – Labrador hybrid, a breed exponentially growing in popularity since its development by Australian Wally Conron in the 1950s. The book sets itself apart from other “dog books” in that the treatment is aimed at a compassionate and sincere dog owner, while remaining comprehensive in scope. The author’s conversational language and honest tone is likable, in keeping with the breed she describes. Thoroughly researched, loads of well-organized information is presented with a great many “Gee, I didn’t know that” passages. As a dog owner, the book proved to be an excellent read in itself, and I found myself chuckling in places: “You will quickly learn from experience that a Labradoodle who doesn’t get enough exercise, becomes mischievous and often destructive.” We have a Springer Spaniel, a breed which shares a similar energy level to the Labradoodle. And on a day when the walk is cut short, for instance, you are more likely to see stuffing from the living room cushions on the kitchen floor with Mister Collins panting happily in the middle of it all. The author owns two Labradoodles. I liked her personal observations regarding behavior and human-dog interaction, including instances when the author learned lessons the hard way. Her first Labradoodle Sandy, acquired from puppy hood from a breeder, ran into health problems initially being fed certain dog food. The subsequent discussion of canine nutritional concerns was eye opening: As a result, I purchased a different brand of dog food for our Springer. I was also impressed by the book’s practicality, the author well aware of relevant issues all dog owners would appreciate and for the prospective dog owner, would be invaluable to know ahead of time. “I am going to provide you an overview of the expenses associated with bringing your Labradoodle home for the first time (your initial expenditure) as well as the monthly costs you should come to expect.” The cost break down she provides, for instance, is more detailed than anything I’ve seen before. All in all, this is THE book to possess if one is contemplating acquiring a Labradoodle. It is also a terrific book for any prospective dog owner: The principles are general, well-conceived with accessible readability.
Targeted at novices with an interest in man's best friend, this book provides an authoritative introduction to the Labradoodle breed; a newly fashionable designer canine crossbreed- the progeny of a Labrador & Poodle ancestral combination.
This title is highly informative, avoids technical terminology and is very easy for the average reader to understand. No required background knowledge of either cynology (canine studies) or zoology (animal biology).
A very comprehensive non-fiction title with a huge amount of detailed information on the appearance, size range, characteristics, dietary and care regime for Labradoodles. Very helpful to owners of the breed and all those considering Labradoodle ownership. Gorgeous photos of Labradoodles, with images of a range of differently sized and colored examples of the breed. Labradoodles come in a range of sizes and colors but they all look sweet and so cuddly!
Author Susanne Saben is clearly a dog lover, devoted to Labradoodles and her deep affection shines through the pages of this book.
I thought this book was very informative especially if you are new to owning a Labradoodle. The quick-look headings and easy format allowed you to learn a lot in a short space of time. The author is very knowledgable on their subject and this comes across well in the book. A great guide, well worth it and certainly recommended for owners of this breed.
