Society for Paranormals #6

A Spider Comes Calling

Rate this book
Life after death just got deadlier.

Mrs. Beatrice Timmons (aka Miss Knight) is thoroughly unimpressed by the troop of monkeys that have invaded her kitchen. Of course, that’s only the beginning of the influx of undesirable critters. When a giant spider appears in the garden, Mrs. Timmons knows there’s trouble brewing and it’s not served with tea. A choice must be agree to an unholy alliance or endanger an unborn child? To confound matters further, her husband disapproves of the whole venture. And that’s before Mrs. Timmons vanishes into the Underworld to pay an unsolicited visit to the God of Death. While it’s all for a good cause, the consequences could be dire.

Miss Knight and the Spider's Web is the sixth case in the “Society for Paranormals” series, in which a paranormal detective refuses to let danger, death, and unsolicited suitors inconvenience her in colonial Kenya. Welcome to a cozy mystery series concerning Victorian etiquette, African mythology, and the search for a perfect spot of tea.

★★★★★ "Once again, I am giving a five-star review to another one of Ms. Ehsani's books in her "Society for Paranormals" series. It's truly not like anything else I've ever read! Weaving creatures from African folklore into each story, Ms. Ehsani creates tales that evoke a time and place both alarmingly real and quite fantastical. Our heroine, Bee, just can't help falling headlong into danger, but it's always because of her need to be helpful, and proper, of course." -- CJ

★★★★★ "Fans of Beatrice Knight will love this book! We've become enchanted by the Victorian lady facing paranormal entities in Africa with dignity and courage. I for one love the part after the book where the author fesses up and tells us what is truth and what is fiction, sometimes truth can be just as strange as fiction." -- Diane Rapp

★★★★★ "Are you ready to read about paranormal creatures that are different from everything else out there? Are you interested in learning a little about a location rarely written about? Are you curious how a victorian-paranormal woman would react to the above? Then buy the series, sit back, relax and be prepared to smile." -- mYbks

★★★★★ " I am enjoying this series so much, reading how relationships and characters evolve and grow, learning some African mythology. The Fact and Fiction summary at the end of the novel. "A Spider Comes Calling" is my favourite book of the series so far. I would love to meet Beatrice and many of the characters in these wonderful books." -- Kate Ashley

★★★★★ "Beatrice may think she has no maternal instincts, but when a giant spider and a deadly mantis come to take Lily's unborn baby daughter for an un-deadly scheme, Beatrice will have none of it! This sixth adventure has Beatrice caring for a tiny creature, while training for a terrible mission, in order to save the baby. The pace is fast, furious, and filled with unusual creatures of the dark and light." -- Cleargrace

Adventure and dry humor

Mrs. Timmons, formerly Miss Knight, is summoned by the African trickster god Anansi who is in the form of an elephant sized spider and whose wife is Mrs. Timmon's mortal enemy, the she demon/giant mantis Koki. Anansi doesn't want much. Just for Mrs. Timmons to undertake a mission to the domain of Le-eyo, the god of the dead. Telling Anansai no isn't really an option. He is one of the most powerful of the African paranormal entities. Even Kam, the god of lightning defers to him.

In addition to the usual cast of fascinating paranormal and human characters, Mrs Timmons encounters new surprises and a few old acquaintances along the way. Ngofariman, a talking chimpanzee; the horse-headed water serpent Inkanyamba who doesn't like bridges; the Abatwa, an ant-riding fairy folk; the Sasabonsam, a ridiculously tall vampire with huge, bat wings; Burr, a water sprite; Shelby, a baby monkey and the Rainbow Serpents Damballa and Aiya Weddo. I probably left out someone or something.

Written with Ms Ehsani's customary wit and sense of adventure, Mrs Timmons continues to face dangerous challenges with courage and aplomb, often to the exasperation of Mr. Timmons.

Okay, so I said I was going to take a break from Paranormals as the next book isn't out for a bit...but I couldn't help myself. I just had to keep going.

In this book we are reunited with Anansai and Koki, those vexing insects that Bee only just tolerates and would squish them beneath her sturdy boots if only they were smaller. Lilly's unborn baby is being used as a bargaining chip to further Anansai's agenda. Jonas has his wish fulfilled and Mr Timmons finds out how much of a trouble magnet his wife truly is...

As usual Ms Ehsani hasn't let down, her books are such a pleasure to read, they are so much fun and quick to read. I find this book to be the funniest one so far I've read.
I've received the book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

There are not very many series that can really hold up well for more than 4 or 5 books. There are even fewer that can hold you attention to complete the entire series from book 1 to book 10 with that desperate need to know how it all ends. Miss Knight is like Parasol Protectorate meets Amelia Peabody. Victorian ladies all with little regard for the societal strictures of their day. Then there is Yao (a personal favorite of the many characters in this series). If this was a sitcom, he would be the one-off character who garnered so many fans that he had to be written in as a regular. Highly recommend.

I continue to love this series because of the author 's imagination to draw the reader into the story. The characters, the setting and the history continues to enlighten us. The sense of humor makes this read a pleasant read. I highly recommend this paranormal book!

I thoroughly enjoy this series. The stories flow really well, they are fun and they have humour!
Gideon and Simon work very well together as "enemies", the scene with the "baby beating wife" (the baby monkey being poked scene) made me laugh, just what I needed.
The characters and storyline is well thought out, it keeps me interested and I look forward to reading more.

Cliffhanger! I'm glad the fact/fiction section clarified some things that puzzled me about where the paranormal came from, I was sure that not all were Kenyan. I'm still very much enjoying all the different things that are brought together.

Love the humkr

Finding a missing daughter, keeping her cousin and niece safe and all with a rather irreverent Victorian attitude. Mrs Timmons is at it again.

Be a is at it again

This is just an excellent series. Romance, suspense and adventure as Beatrice sets forth with her walking stick, her friends and a good cup of tea. You get a clean paranormal tale with a Victorian flavor: enjoy.

As in her past works Vered EHSANI has combined well developed characters, an odd cast of paranormal, the mystique of Africa and an amazingly dry but humorous wit that is certain to keep you entertained ! A SPIDER COMES CALLING is no different yet again presents the unique abilities of the characters and the paranormal beings.

Trouble MUST be her middle name as Mrs. Timmons, former investigator for a paranormal society, goes about the days usual activities..... Well, there are no usual daily activities for Mrs. Timmons given the paranormal beings and situations that she attracts like a magnet ! There are paranormals of every shape, size, an imagination that so rudely drop by without invitation. Deplorable manners!

THIS BOOK IS MAGIC ! Every time I start to read one of Vered's books all time stops for me, no chores seem to get done, no meals are cooked, and I can't put the book down until I've reached the outside cover ! Amazing !!!

Wonderful Story

Miss Knight is once again coerced into a dangerous mission. But this one has an unexpected benefit. Unfortunately, with her husband left out of the loop, and other relatives threatened, troubles are brewing at home. The indomitable Miss Knight, as the locals refer to Mrs. Timmons, is capable of handling the mission. Of-course, she has help from some very strong and paranormal supporters. I just love the characters and the storyline in this book. I cannot wait for the next one.

Another great story in the Society for Paranormals series.
This is the 6th in the series and as I've read only 2 of the others, I recently purchased the set of the first 4. When I've finished reading #6: A Spider Comes Calling, I will go back and start from the beginning. No hardship there, because the stories are very entertaining and okay to re-read.

A great, fun read with more new characters added to the cast. I definitely felt this book added a lot more intrigue to the ongoing plot of the series and once again, has left me hanging for the next book. I'm really curious as to where Gideon's character development is taking the readers.
My teapot is ready for my next visit with Beatrice.

I love all the Vered Ehsani books but this one was a little short. Worst of all, it is a cliff hanger. I don't mind cliff hangers in longer book but this was just a short novella and the plot was definitely not developed enough.

It was amazing but I feel so bad for Bee now she is in a position where she may need to rethink her decisions on if she should help her arch nemesis or hide her and her family far away.
