Rate this book
Fire Starter launches you into a galaxy where theology and aliens collide. Major Derec Landon and his crew travel in search of intelligent life on other planets. What will those aliens do? How different will they be? Will they know God? How about Jesus?

Derec had this mission planned and completely under control. With the best crew and the best ship, they could handle anything. At least that is what he thought. Join Derec in this adventure in the 23rd century as he discovers just how prepared they are.

Fire Starter is theologically sound Christian Science Fiction that does not shy away from the Gospel. It is the first book in a trilogy that will leave you in awe of God’s power and wisdom not only in this fictional reality but in ours as well.

Vance Kessler's writing style could be called "Informal Theology." He loves to study about God. When he learns something new, he likes to frame that truth in a way that is easily relatable. This helps us better understand whatever truth God is teaching him. His writing is interesting, easy to read, and easy to understand. You will find very few big fancy church words in his writing. His latest joy has been in writing Christian Science fiction. He manages to put God’s truth into the gripping fictional realities he creates.

Vance loves reading non-fiction Christian books about various aspects of God or about Christian living. Vance is also an avid fan of science fiction and fantasy. His favorite authors include C.S. Lewis, Timothy Keller, William Craig, N.T. Wright, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Francis Chan, A.W. Tozer, Orson Scott Card, Robert Jordan, Isaac Asimov, Neil Gaiman, Terry Brooks, Terry Pratchett, and of course J.R.R. Tolkien.

Vance Kessler is a native Georgian and lives there with his lovely wife and his two wonderful children. Vance loves to study the Bible and has been studying it for over 30 years. He is a quiet person but if you get him started talking about spiritual matters it is hard to get him to stop.

Vance was born in Savannah, Georgia. He has a long Christian heritage to draw from. Vance was raised in a strong Christian home with a father who started and preached at two different churches. He is a direct descendant of the Salzburgers. The Salzbugers came over from Salzburg Austria in the 1700's to escape religious persecution and to worship freely in the United States. The oldest standing church building in Georgia was built by the Salzburgers, right down the road from where Vance's father was born and raised.

As an example of Redemptive Science Fiction, Firestarter is an intriguing tale. This is speculative science fiction with a core of truth—probably. As Vance says in his intro to Firestarter:

“I hope I have created a story that is enjoyable to read while still being theologically sound. To accomplish this, I had to stretch what I personally believe about how things probably happened into the realm of what could possibly have happened. I personally believe God did things differently than how some of them are portrayed in this story, however I do feel what is portrayed is theologically possible. Even if by a strange twist of fate these events turn out to be close to the truth, they will still fit within the bounds of scripture, but it may require stretching some preconceived views to see it that way.”

I believe he wrote a very entertaining tale starting from his premise. it surprised me— several times. That is rare at this stage of my life. It did give him a good tale to teach an important truth. I think you’ll enjoy it.

As Redemptive Science Fiction, Firestarter deserves recognition
Redemptive Science Fiction Firestarter recognition of achievement awardAs you know by now, this spiritual level in books today is rarely reached. Authors tend to avoid it because of the potential impact on sales. Vance resisted that temptation and gives us good science fiction with a solid dose of truth. That needs to be recognized and encouraged.

You will enjoy this read.

It’s a good book for youth
I imagine that young teenagers and possibly pre-teens would also enjoy this one. I’d read it first before you give it to your child. But it’s a solid story.
