“I AM GOTHAM” epilogue. In this stand-alone tale, Batman seeks redemption as he tries to keep Gotham Girl from going down a dangerous path. But can the Dark Knight save someone who doesn’t want to be saved?
The first arc, I am Gotham would be way better if people care about Gotham and Gotham Girl. The problem is, there weren't enough issues to show who they really are and just for you know, for readers get to know them deeper. They're good folks, siblings who idolize the Batman. Then they went crazy.
So what happened in this issue? Batman helped Gotham Girl to move on. Period. That's it. Oh there's that setup for the next arc. This issue is a waste of money. Again I say what I've said in my previous review: we could have seen more of the Psycho-Pirate and Hugo Strange.
Another problem for the I am Gotham arc is that it is too busy setting up the next arc it for got to tell a story. In almost every issue, there is a reference about the Monster Men. Detective Comics on the other hand also gives references to that as well but it was okay because DetCom is telling a solid story.
That was why The Court of Owls was good. Snyder (plus his great writing) was given a whole year to explore the Court, exploding with greatness in each chapter. He neither set up nor tell what the next arc would be in the panels, only in interviews. Snyder never forgot to tell a story. The DC Rebirth Batman has that potential, but never fully utilized.
Amanda Waller, god why does she have to explain half the story? First with what Strange and Psycho-Pirate did, next with the mission briefing scene for the next arc, which possibly features Bane. Man, Waller and Batman are supposed in a word warfare like rappers on steroids! Word exposition and mission briefing are for Task Force X members. She has cool moments though (the General Lane scene) but most of the time, she's there to conveniently tell what the creative team couldn't show us.
Batman Rebirth series is off to a disappointing start. It lacks the motivation, depth and excitement that would make the readers want more from the series.
A fitting end to the Batman Rebirth's first arc , or should i say first failed arc
The Epilogue to the I am Gotham was rather well done , with the readers witnessing the aftermath of Gotham's death , Gotham Girl is having hallucination and hearing voices and yet saving people in need and in turn killing herself slowly and steadily . Batman is out there trying to save her from herself .
Tom King's whole run for Batman has been awful and I'd be honest to say that had it been any other series I'd have stopped buying it , but... you know , It's the Goddamn Batman ergo i keep buying it and yet even the epilogue of this whole story fails to excite me & frankly 1 issue showtime of Hugo Strange and then poof no more followed by the finale of this edition you'd think that it would excite you to await the next edition , instead I dread the next edition because i hate what's Tom King's doing , i hate that Batman comics shows Batman having no involvement in action and just standing and posing , i hate the countless ,senseless destruction of Batmobile , and i hate the fact that there's absolutely no plot destination . We had Gotham now we have Monster Men and we have had only 4 pages of Batman being involved in action and out of that he actually did 2 scenes of action (trust me i counted)
That said one thing that's come out good from all of this is the art , now i know there have been a lot of people involved in the art for the Batman rebirth but over the progression of the series i can see and appreciate the improvement in the illustration if not the colour
Overall it was a fairly average issue and one of the better books in the story arc but overall i'd not suggest people to spend money for this story arc
The ending is what saved this. Honestly, I wish they had kept Gotham around for longer, and maybe had saved this arc for liked the third or forth one. That sounds off, but basically if Tom King had given Gotham and Gotham Girl more time to develope, their story might have been more impactful.
Why do I have to care about Claire? She wasn't as fully fleshed out as her brother or have any other compelling qualities aside from her superpowers that lend themselves some potency by shaving years off her life. She wasn't really that impressive to me by herself either because it's been made clear she was just emulating her brother about being a vigilante. Her behavior in the last two issues had also not been pleasant. It made sense, considering the psychological scarring she had been through in the hands of Psycho Pirate, but other than that it was still quite easy to see that she had been nothing more but a supporting character in every sense of the word. She was there to give her brother Hank more gravitas and in the end she became responsible for killing him.
I suppose I should be fair and give the girl a break, so I will. I might, at least, with this final installment for I Am Gotham.
I found Claire a wee bit interesting here as she slowly unraveled due to the crushing weight of grief and guilt over her brother's unfortunate passing. Claire essentially began losing what little grasp she had on sanity to begin with and started talking to herself quite loudly while addressing said dearly departed sibling. What was so intriguing about King's approach here is that he also used it as an opportunity to bring about villain cameos. These villains are obscure and old enough to make the nerdiest of fans feel a sense of delight and maybe even some slight smug entitlement that they themselves easily recognized who these villains are and what issues they appeared in. I haven't been reading Batman in comics that long (I only began to seriously digest and dissect his stories since 2014 with my Bat-blog), so these references didn't click with me at all until I've done my research.
I'm not going to discuss said cameos because I'm not an authority about their appearances and I frankly didn't give a shit. I was focused on Claire because for Chrissake why would a casual reader of present comics care about her if Tom King can't make even the veteran readers in general settle down enough to give a damn about her and stop going "Oh my god, that's a cameo from an old issue back in..." or something like that? This issue's central idea is to deal with Claire's grief over the loss that was her very own doing and yet a good percentage of readers would probably rather focus on those obscure villains. It just seemed like a disservice to whoever Claire should be. She never had a fair chance even from that start and now an issue which supposedly focuses on her was also a tribute for other things. Poor Claire. That being said, I enjoyed the idea of her still going about superheroing while losing her mind in the process. Girl at least can multi-task. And then we get a nice emotional wrap-up later on.
Nice share, Bruce, but this shouldn't be about you! This issue wasn't as awful as the one that came before it. But it's not a good one either and only had a few redeemable qualities to keep it from being worse. I want to see more or Claire after this. We have been spoiled in Issue #5 that she and Duke Thomas get married so I guess she stopped using her powers and became a normal person after that because she didn't die too soon or anything. Well, that's it for Claire, I guess.
The art's really good. The story is really good. King can continue to write Alfred/Bruce conversations. Even if it's not a crook problem, Batman problem-solves his way along and the pop-up villains were original, and yet perfect for Gotham.
King's made Batman seem relatable, and also fallible. But also respectable. His Batman uses his surroundings to mass effect. He empathises where he can't punch, and consults others. I really, really like this title. And I really like this Batman with heart.
Rather curious how many Bat family comics seem to end with Bruce clutching an emotional, young, blonde girl to his chest lately. Anyway, this had some really nice emotional and psychological stuff. There's promise in this whole Gotham Girl concept and hopefully King will dig into it. The little tag at the end is unnecessary and dampens the rest of the issue's impact a bit, but oh well. Already suspicious of what it says for the story direction.
King is either writing a sprawling story with a bajillion parts, and later everyone will look back and say 'Genius' or this is an unfocused mess. Six issues and he has maybe 9 subplots, with Batman at center of two? Taken separately I don't hate any subplot, but I would appreciate some consolidation.
This wraps up the I Am Gotham arc. I'm overall disappointed with the first 6 issues of Batman Rebirth. The most exciting part of this issue is the final few panels that set up the next story.
This is obviously a filler issue, but it's a darn good one. I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would and it does a nice job of setting up the next arc. Plus...Kite-man!
This one was very sad.The heartbreak that Gotham girl experiences is truly gut wrenching. The scene with Batman consoling her was very moving.Sounds like up next should be Bane.Cannot wait for the next issue.
Really bad ending for the final of this inside series. No action, dull story and an even more disappointing over of what will come next. They really fail on that one!
Gotham Girl has faced a lot of tragedy recently with the loss of her family and Psycho Pirate distorting her emotions. She’s trying to work through her feelings, but she’s still going out to try to save the city . How can Batman help save her?
This issue is an epilogue only in that it kind of wraps up the first act of this ongoing story. It deals with the fallout from Hugo Strange’s plans and the Psycho Pirate manipulating the hero Gotham. It sets up Gotham Girl as a victim and triggers something in Batman that only such personal tragedy can. The end of the issue shows the lengths he’s willing to go to in an effort to aid Gotham Girl and put an end to Hugo Strange and his allies.
There’s so much still unresolved from this first arc - Batman never even got a chance to engage Hugo Strange in these issues at all. He was forced to deal with the collateral damage of Gotham and Gotham Girl. Now he has to turn his focus on Strange himself, and it looks like he’s going to have to face quite a gauntlet to end it all. So this issue really just sets up the next round of stories more than resolve anything.
We have a completely different art team this issue led by the incomparable Ivan Reis. Reis always has such a great sense of layout and character. Everything is unique, detailed and so vibrant. He even makes just standing on a rooftop exciting! The team of inkers blends pretty seamlessly and work with Reis’s pencils very well. Beautiful issue!
While it puts something of a bow on this first act, there’s a lot more story ahead for Batman.
So, I looked for the spoons after X-Men Unlimited #5 but my mother had hidden them already out of fear that I might hurt myself. Not sure where she got that crazy notion before me! And good thing she did, because I got to behold the beautiful art of David Finch again! I don't talk a lot about his art, but because I am not super experienced in that department, and I am not reading a similar year art at the same time to draw any comparisons either.
Gotham Girl is hurting and by helping Gotham city she hurts less. Which could be the reason Batman is helping Gotham too! Which honestly works for every part of life, you don't always have to help out of the goodness of your heart. You could do it to feel good (Which doesn't mean you don't have goodness in your heart) But another way to deal with hurting is hurt others! And it would work as magically as helping, only it will take you spiraling down a pit that has no bottom.
I like Tom King, I think he is doing great, I think he rejuvenated my comic reads again. I read because I want to read more. Not because I have to read one of this and one of that daily. And when I read an old Batman issue in the middle I finish it fast because I want to see what else Tom King is doing in this amazing run. I think the run is on par with Scott Snyder's run. I like how he is tying his first arc to his second arc. I would love if he did that for the entire run make it all feel like a long series that we can't wait to see the next episode of.
I'll admit, this one brought me to tears. Likely cause I was listening to this: https://youtu.be/_Ogfr-CTzR8 while I was reading it. Or maybe perhaps it was because of that incredible splash page. I can think of few double decker splash pages that seemed to leap to life quite like the one of Gotham City in this issue. And that hug at the end. 🥺😭 Maaaan, what an issue. What a solid and tragic story. You gotta wonder after awhile if Batman is weirdly being selfish in his endeavor to save everyone. In that he's doing it to make himself feel better. The people in need must feel incidental after awhile- or maybe because each life feels so meaningful, perhaps it's that buzz of relief, knowing he has saved something so special and irreplaceable that keeps him going.
Regardless, if you're into depressed heroes who are struggling through their heroics, then boy oh boy do I got a comic for you!
Cant but feel bad for Gotham Girl, especially after all she has been through. And also for Batman for that matter. I really like the way the story is going. Makes me want to continue reading. I started reading this series really late, today is July 1, 2019 and issue 74 is coming out next, but with this story I dont mind reading a couple of issues a day to catch up.
This issue deals with the emotional fallout that Gotham Girl is dealing with. It had some really good moments and I liked the story it was telling. The use of "I know" was really good and hit hard at times. It would have been nice for Gotham and Gotham Girl to have a little more time to develope so that the reader could connect with them more.
Gotham Girl is still dealing with her fear from PhycoPirate and grieving her dead bdother. Batman reveals his self to her tongue to help her work through her grief. Bane now has PhycoPirate Nd Batman plans to get him back to help Gotham Girl/Clair.
