"The problem, my old friend, is that a naive and stupid nineteen-year-old virgin was in charge of my life at a crucial moment. It's his laughable failure at that time that has put me in the mess you see me in today." "Hold on. Am I to understand that this is your younger self you're talking about?" "God, I was an idiot. Well, I'm not going to let that cretin screw things up one second longer." Freddie is in a pickle. His love-life, career and personal happiness are in shreds, thanks - apparently - to foolish decisions his youthful self made years ago. This would be an insurmountable problem to most of us, but Freddie believes he can solve it by simply going back in time and having a word with that young gentleman to give him the benefits of his hard-won wisdom. What could possibly go wrong? Love On The Springs of My Time-Travelling Bed is a foolishly romantic and adventurous novel from the author of the celebrated The Hills Are Stuffed With Swedish Girls ("a joy to read from cover to cover - it made me laugh, cry and, above all, want more . . . 5 stars isn't enough").
This book was an interesting one - and not because it was good, it wasn't particularly.
A lot of things in this book just don't make sense or are errors (like the dates), the characters have no depth, the romance portrayed is insane (everyone marries first person of a different gender they meet at uni, but you can turn back time and then they marry the second person of a different gender they meet at uni), and you can see the entire plot coming from a mile away.
However - I did actually kind of enjoy this read, and I'm not entirely sure how... It is an easy read, a bit of a page turner, time flies, there are some genuinely very emotional moments in it, and there is a fucking beautiful poem within it.
If you could pick it apart, move some things around, and cut out a lot - you could have a beautiful 5 star short story.
I wouldn't go away recommending this to anyone, but I really really do hope Richard Happer writes another novel and I'd buy it in a heartbeat... Until then I'll reread The Hills Are Stuffed With Swedish Girls and keep recommending that one to everyone.
