I never quite figured out what the author was trying to accomplish with this book. For a book ostensibly about Tolkien, there was very little actual Tolkien discussion.

The author is correct that attempting to deny the essential "Catholicness" of Tolkien's writing is to miss the point. I'm just not sure that attempting to use LOTR as a gospel tract is an entirely appropriate interpretation either.

I wanted to give this a shot but it proved to be what I feared, a self-serving, preachy perspective from one who claims to know what Tolkien thought and wanted his works to be based solely on the fact that the author is a Christian as Tolkien was.

It was a laborious read.
