2022 You think our current culture is irredeemably divided? Read the Psalms. You will see divisions even deeper than those on the evening news. The goodness, faithfulness, power, and love of God set against the wickedness, unfaithfulness, weakness, and hate of humanity. The temporal power of the wicked set against the eternal power of God. That is the true divide. Man against God. The Psalmist understand the results of that divide and so eloquently describes it in the despair of lost sinners living in a broken world against the eternal hope of the redeemed living in light of Heaven. But they never leave you with that divide. They always point you to the end of the divide. The ultimate victory of God over his enemies and His rewarding of those who love him. It is always encouraging, deeply convicting at times, but always encouraging and comforting. Read them. Think on them. You will know God better after you do. 2021 This year I started a focused reading of Psalms. I read through it in a year while also rereading a psalm every day for a week and then reading a couple of commentaries and writing down down my thoughts. Somehow, I am always amazed at the timeliness of God’s Word. It answers fears that we barely acknowledge to ourselves. It calms worries that are so deep we barely know they have become part of us. It turns our eyes from the despair to the surest of hopes. It forever settles the future of every person and nation with exquisite justice and mercy. That’s how God used these ancient songs in my life this year; to bring peace, comfort, and stability. Perfect, for such a year as we have had. Well really any year, for what year doesn’t have more than its share of heartbreak and questions? It has been so easy to focus on what has gone wrong this year and the coming troubles. But as I read, it became impossible to miss that even in the most mournful or pleading psalm, the author’s focus really isn’t on his trials. It’s always on God, His glory, His honor, His care, and His love. Read carefully, it will change the way you see the world.
I couldn’t think of a way to express the joy, comfort, and purpose I found there this year. Then I remembered the Words were already there.
Psalm 145 (1) David's Psalm of praise. I will extol thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever. (2) Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name forever and ever. (3) Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable. (4) One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts. (5) I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works. (6) And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts: and I will declare thy greatness. (7) They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness. (8) The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. (9) The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works. (10) All thy works shall praise thee, O LORD; and thy saints shall bless thee. (11) They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power; (12) To make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of his kingdom. (13) Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations. (14) The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down. (15) The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season. (16) Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing. (17) The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works. (18) The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. (19) He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them. (20) The LORD preserveth all them that love him: but all the wicked will he destroy. (21) My mouth shall speak the praise of the LORD: and let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever.
Psalm is such a joy to read. There a chapters that just magnify and glorify God. There are also chapters where the writer will pour out their complaint and anguish to God. What I appreciate about Psalm is that it doesn't matter how the writer starts off complaining, it always ends with a triumphant praise.
I have read the book of Psalms many times. It is one of my favorite books of the Bible. I usually read it a few times during the year. It is full of beauty and strength and wisdom. Much about life can be found within the pages of the book of Psalms.
