This is an interesting novel set in the context of the 1971 war that provides an on the ground perspective from the standpoint of a young Pakistan Army Lieutenant posted there. The mood is dark, sombre and highly tense. Mukti Bahni is highly active and effective with local and Indian support, the relatively small Pakistani Army presence is besieged, unpopular and often ambushed, and resentment, reprisals, doubts and bloodthirstiness characterize the environment. The narrative is candid as Lt. Afzal comes across an array of perceptions and attitudes from Pakistani Army officers that look upon the natives with distrust, disgust, fear and horror - with some driven to acts of brutality triggered by the violence they and their families have faced; while others adhering resolutely to the military code in highly trying circumstances. At the same time, there is a deep endeavor on his part to understand the psyche of a people angry, frightened and up in arms who are reacting to a sense of being colonized - though there is a spectrum that ranges from the rebellious to the loyal. The West Pakistani state appears distant, alien and even aloof as these soldiers deem themselves isolated and abandoned, waiting for it and the promised US fleet to come to their rescue. The Khaleej or gulf between the two people and their two lands is a fast widening and seemingly insurmountable one.

The author's own army experience informs and makes credible the details of action at a platoon level, with the enemy resorting to guerrilla tactics. The routine of small encampments, digging of bunkers, the sociology of local informers, the dangerous day and night patrolling, laying and avoiding ambushes, incursions, bombardment, and short and hurried encounters are well described and bring a certain immediacy and believability to the narrative. Assessment of locals as the 'Othered' is perceptive and empathetic but the Others remain Others as he doesn't really report many direct encounters.

The one notable local character he does engage with is a women called Yasmeen who is the sister of an East Pakistani military officer who has gone over to the other side. She is raped by two patrolling soldiers and later a local notable, and defiantly confronts the criminals. Her stoicism and courage, his sympathy for her plight, as well as his desire for female company in what is a lonely, wretched and risky existence, leads to him starting a relationship with her. However, the way it progresses and is played out is often unreal and weakens the novel. What was hitherto a fairly considered assessment of a very different landscape, a tragic milieu, and a highly challenging political and military imbroglio, turns into a melodramatic and abrupt love story. To its credit the protagonist is honest and empathetic and often deeply shocked by what he sees as the brutalization of his own compatriots; critical as he also is about Mukti Bahni's savagery and its support by the Indians. He doesn't dwell deep on the historical events that lead to the entire situation but that is understandable given his age and exposure. He is propelled by his circumstances to be caught in the cross-fire at a particular time and place and that is what he describes. Overall an interesting read which could have explored additional and deeper layers of this complex, dark and tragic chapter of the past. I would give it 2.5 stars.

سانحہ مشرقی پاکستان بارے بہت کچھ لکھا اور بولا گیا۔۔ اس واقعے کو لے کر بہترین ادب تخلیق ہوا لیکن یہ ناول خلیج اپنا طرح کا ایک الگ ہی ناول ہے۔۔

مرکزی کردار اسلم جب ڈھاکہ ائیرپورٹ پہ اترتا ہے تو سیاستدانوں اور فوجی اشرافیہ کے غلط فیصلے حالات کو اس نہج پہ لے آئے تھے جہاں سے واپسی ناممکن لگ رہی تھی. مشرقی پاکستان کی درو دیوار اور انسانوں پر سے مغربی پاکستانیوں کا بھروسہ ختم ہو چکا تھا۔ دوست دشمن میں تمیز ختم ہو گئی تھی۔۔۔ اسلم وہاں پہنچتے ہی انسانی نفسیات کے عجیب عجیب پہلوؤں سے واسطہ پڑ رہا تھا

کسی بھی المیہ میں سب سے ولنرایبل مخلوق عورت ہوتی ہے۔ یہاں مشرقی پاکستان کے بھارتی سرحد پہ واقع ایک دور افتادہ گاؤں میں اسلم کا واسطہ بھی ایسی ہی ایک عورت یاسمین سے پڑا۔۔۔ یاسمین ایک مشرقی پاکستانی باغی فوجی کی بہن جس کا بھائی باغی ہو کے مکتی باہنی میں شامل ہو گیا تھا۔۔۔افسوس ناک حالات میں تعارف ہوا اسلم اور یاسمین کا اور چپکے سے ایک گہرے تعلق میں بدل گیا

مشرقی پاکستان کے المیہ کا کیا انجام ہوا وہ تو ہم سب جانتے ہیں۔۔۔ کیا آپ جاننا چاہیں گے کہ کیا ہوا ہو گا انجام اسلم یاسمین کے تعلق کا۔۔ کیا یاسمین جس مغربی پاکستان کی افواج کو غاضب سمجھتی ہے اس کے ایک افسر کا ساتھ دے گی یا اسلم پیار میں پڑ کے اہنے فرض سے غداری کرے گا۔۔۔۔۔۔۔یا۔۔۔۔۔۔

بعض اوقات حکمران اشرافیہ کے غلط فیصلے حالات کو اس نہج پہ لے آتے وطن کے ایک خطے کے رہنے والے دوسروں کو غاصب اور استحصال کرنے والے سمجھ لیتے۔ اس وقت مشرقی پاکستان کی بھی یہی حالت تھی(اب بھی یہی حالات ہیں پاکستان کے۔ بلوچستان اور کے پی کا ایک بڑا حصہ اب ایسے ہی جذبات کا حامل ہے جو اس وقت مشرقی پاکستانیوں کے تھے۔ تب بھی زور اور جبر پالیسی تھا اب بھی وہی سب کچھ آنکھیں بند کر کے کیا جا رہا ہے)

میں نے رات ہی یہ ناول ختم کیا اور فیصلہ کیا کہ اس کو آپ لوگوں کے ساتھ شیئر کرنا ہے جلدی سے۔ کیونکہ اردو ادب کے اس مختصر سے ناول کے بارے ہماری نئی پڑھنے والی پیڑھی واقف نہیں ہے۔۔
