Pride Over Pity

Rate this book
Fans of MTV's Teen Mom have watched Kailyn Lowry grow from a vulnerable, pregnant teen into a fiercely independent young mother. Through it all Kailyn has faced challenges with her head held high and her spirit intact. In a moving effort to finally put the past behind her, Kailyn shares her troubled, often painful story and reveals the dark secrets she has so closely guarded. Guided by the single principle of helping other young girls like her, she takes the reader behind the scenes, writing candidly about her struggle to provide a safe home for her son, breaking her silence on the question of her sexuality, and sharing the traumatic sexual experiences that have left her deeply scarred.

I read Pride over Pity with the same guilty pleasure I feel when I watch Teen Mom and Teen Mom 2. Honestly, it's like watching a train wreck. I finished this book quickly, because 1) the writing was like reading a paper aimed at elementary school students, and 2) it was so lame, I wanted to see how much worse it got.

Of the girls on Teen Mom and Teen Mom 2, I actually thought Kailyn had the most ability to write a good book about her life. She seems intelligent enough to get her thoughts on a page coherently. Part of me wonders if this book hadn't been ghostwritten, if Kailyn's writing could have been better.

I had a lot of problems with the book though.

1. There was no reason to the order of the chapters. It wasn't a chronological narrative of her life. Things bounced around so much and the chapters seemed random and mismatched.

2. I felt like I was reading entries out of her diary, instead of something that is trying to tell a story and had been edited (and in this case, ghostwritten.)

3. Kailyn's really annoying. So much of the book comes off as preachy and holier-than-thou. Kailyn slams people who are religious pretty hard, while at the same time being incredibly defensive of people putting her down for her atheism. Hypocritical much?

4. And with her atheism in mind, WE GET IT. There were many times I found that she had to insert the fact that she was atheist, when it was incredibly irrelevant to the rest of the chapter. OK, you wanted to name your kid Moses potentially. It might be a biblical name but oooooh, you're atheist. Or the mention of how she was bothered by a bible verse being read at her legal marriage to Javi because she's atheist. I don't give a shit what her religion is, but whatever it is, it's annoying to hear about it every few breaths. It also bothered me how she implied religious people lacked logic. I'm not even religious. I actually hold closer religious beliefs to Kailyn than anything, but I don't feel the need to put people down because of their beliefs. And I don't need to justify mine to anyone. Kailyn seems so full of being defensive and justifying who she is.

By the end of the book, I was so glad it was over. I didn't learn much about Kailyn from this book that isn't shown on TV. And it was written poorly. Adrienne Wenner might want to consider a new career, because if this is what her ghostwriting is putting out... Ugh.

This book was actually really good up until Chapter 15. Kailyn likes to aggressively state how she is an atheist. She says she doesn't want to put others down for their faith and yet she outwardly proclaims people of faith are morons who can't wrap their heads around scientific fact. She thinks that due to the trials in her life there could not possibly be a God. Christianity allows for a faith following person to become stronger and closer to God in times of need. Perhaps if Kail had more faith it would have helped her through tough times and maybe she would have learned to make better decisions in her life. She also claims several times that she believes in "logical scientific fact" (because people of religion cannot possibly be logical, right *eyeroll*). She claims that she believes in the Fact of the big bang THEORY, its just that. . . a theory. It has not been proven just as God cannot be proven according to her.
Kail also seems to follow a story line through each chapter and then she sprinkles in these random angry chapters that are just opinion pieces on things she hates (religion, tattoo opinions, new age hippy theories). She has bipolar disorder and somehow manages to portray this disease in her writing by suddenly being angry about a topic.
She also continuously rags on Jo's new girlfriend while continuously stating that she's not at all jealous and she loves her new man... Me thinks she dost protest too much.
Over all I enjoyed the story line but I wasn't a huge fan of her sprinkled in stories of social ideas and religion.

Well...it wasn't as bad as Farrah's.

Still in dire need of editing though. Grammar and spelling errors throughout.

For someone who talks about tolerance, she sure makes sure to insult people who believe in God. A lot. Apparently you can't be logical AND believe in God, according to Kailyn.

She complains a lot about how people see her but guess what Kailyn - you ARE selfish and ungrateful. Jo's parents took care of her, and yet she complains that they always stepped in when she and Jo were fighting. Seriously.

Like with Farrah's book, I only brought this on myself. But Teen Mom has always been a guilty pleasure so, whatever.

I would actually give this a 3.5 if I could.

It was a good, quick read that was definitely worth my time. There were just a few things that I didn't like.

1. I agree that at times Kailyn came off a little holier than thou, or a little... I'm not sure what the right word would be. Once, when she was talking about having to stay in a homeless shelter for two days - I understood how that might be uncomfortable, but I felt she could have been a little more grateful that it was only two days. The second time was when she was speaking about religion. I'm not a religious person and I'm not sure what I believe, but at one point she said because she wasn't religious it didn't make her bad, just logical - which is implying that those who don't agree with her aren't logical.

2. It could have used a better editor. At times I felt like they used big words where they weren't needed just to sound smarter, and it interrupted the flow and made it come off a little fake.

All in all, it was interesting to see some of the parts of Kailyn's life that MTV didn't cover, and I really do admire her showing the parts that weren't really flattering to her. Kailyn has always been my favorite MTV 2 mom because I really do feel like she's picked herself up from an ugly place, and I feel like she is really trying to make her life better.

16 and Pregnant and the Teen Mom franchise are a little bit of guilty pleasure for me. Out of all the teen mom's Kailyn is the one I least feel like smacking.

This memoir is interesting. It fills in a lot of the gaps that MTV left out and gives you a more rounded picture of Kailyn as a person. It's not great literature but it's an interesting story of a girl with a rough life who seems to pull it together through determination and a lot of introspection so you have to give credit to Kailyn where credit is due. The writing is a little simplistic but I wonder if that is because the target audience is teens. Unlike other memoirs I've read this one was short on details.

One of the things that bothered me...and this is really not a "review" as it has to do with Kailyn's choices not her writing ability...she has had THREE unplanned pregnancies. THREE. I don't know if this is an indictment on the education teens receive or if it's just something that happened to her. Or maybe it's just me viewing it all from my perch of middle aged mom. But THREE? It seems to me there was a lesson to be learned that got missed somehow.

I purchased, started & finished this book within twelve hours. This includes sleeping & working.
Kail has always been a favorite of mine from the 16 & Pregnant/ TM2 series.
There were definitely some shocking secrets that she did an incredibly good job at hiding from the media until now.
This book is well written & had a really good flow. It isn't even comparable to Farrah's book.
I defintely reccomed reading it if you are a fan of Kail. =)

I know she tries to say she isn't in this book, but Kail Lowry really does come across as a cold-hearted bitch (and I really do not like referring to people that way). I want to like her, but she makes it really difficult by being so bitter and mean. The only time I felt anything for her was when she talked about her extreme anxiety for a healthy child during her pregnancy with Isaac. I totally get that. I thought her chapter on being an atheist was incredibly rude and insulting to anyone who does hold religious views. Also, someone does not just "get over" anorexia "with age and maturity." Nice try, Kail.

This girl comes off as angry and bitter, and the more she says she's not the worse it seems to become. I'm not sure what her motive was for writing this book, but this reader saw it as nothing more than a list of rationale for bad behavior and questionable decision making. If you really don't care what people think, as you claimed over and over in this book, why do you keep trying to explain your actions?

Despite the seemingly utter lack of editing (the co-writer's name even included one too many N's on the back dedication page?!?) and her moments of non-sequitur ranting, the book did draw me in. Her story was very moving and often relatable, kudos to her for having the guts to be so vulnerable and open. Hopefully Kail's cautionary tales help other young girls/women. Yes, this was such a guilty pleasure read but I actually gleaned some meaning from the pages.

Yes I am guilty of reading this book just like I'm guilty of binge watching the show. Kind of disappointed that you don't find out anymore than you would already know from watching the show.

this book is the prime example of the age old saying; “don’t judge a book by its cover”. i was able to understand and sympathize with kailyn in a new and different light compared to how she’s portrayed on teen mom 2. i hope she’s been able to heal from all the negative things that have happened to her. she’s definitely achieved her goal of being an example/role model to girls her age and younger.

Pride Over Pity is a book that I've been super excited to read ever since I heard that it was being released. I'm a hardcore Teen Mom 2 fan, and Kailyn is my favorite of the four young moms that the show features.

To be honest, though, I didn't love it as much as I'd hoped. The editing is shoddy at best — there are lots of grammar and writing mistakes (like missing words, etc.), and the story at times seems to meander all over the place with many random tangents and no clear footing. And that weird, very out-of-place chapter near the end about astrology? So strange.

I was also disappointed by how much of it seemed more like a play-by-play of everything we've already seen on Teen Mom 2. Most of Kailyn's important life moments have taken place on screen, so we've already seen all those things virtually first-hand (I can't imagine why anybody would be reading this if they hadn't seen the show). But there were a few personal bits here and there that I hadn't learned from watching, and some of the things I did see were explained here by Kail in more detail, which did a lot to make it more interesting.

The overall tone of the book is very much defensive, though. Many of the things Kail said felt like she was trying to defend herself against attacks made against her in the tabloids and over social media. I view her as such a strong and confident woman that it was actually a little painful to hear her take this sort of tone with her readers...like she almost felt bad that she was having to explain herself, instead of taking pride in her accomplishments like the title suggests. But I think that a lot of that is because of the book's editing. I rarely felt like I was hearing Kail's voice — the voice that I know so well because of the show. It didn't seem like she was having a one-on-one conversation with the reader, which is how I'd hoped it would be...it came out a lot more affected than that, like she was trying to sound extra mature, and in doing that (which she doesn't need to! She is mature), it came out sounding so unlike her normal personality.

But I still think that this book was worth the read. I just love Kailyn so much, and truly admire her for having so much strength and fortitude. She's struggled so much in her lifetime, but still manages to prevail and actually succeed. She is doing amazingly well for herself and has personally affected many, many people in this world — not to mention how much her work has helped to reduce the teen pregnancy rate in this country! Kailyn is truly somebody to look up to. She is a wonderful mother and person, and as this book goes to show, does not deserve one bit of any of the awful criticism she has received over the years. I admire her for sharing such a personal story, and I hope it has been a cathartic process for her. She's grown in such leaps and bounds over the past few years...I can't wait to see what's next for her.

Pride Over Pity was written as an autobiographical story of Kailyn Lowry, one of the stars of MTV’s hit series Teen Mom 2. Lowry focuses on her teenage years throughout the story as she begins at age six and finishes at her present age of 22 with plans for her future. Lowry reveals her tragic past and goes into great detail about her rocky relationship with both of her neglectful, alcoholic parents, each and every boyfriend she had, her sex stories, getting pregnant, having an abortion, and becoming a teen mom. She was also homeless for a majority of her teenage years and was desperate to find any true friends. Lowry was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and struggled with depression and self-image issues throughout her high school career. She connected with a few distant family members and met the man of her dreams who she ended up marrying and starting a family with. Although she was faced with more obstacles than any teenager should have to deal with, Lowry continues to do everything in her power to be the best mom she can to her two young boys and keep turning her life around one day at a time.

While reading this story, my heart cried out for this young teenage girl with every challenge that crossed her path. Although she no longer exists, I found myself wanting to go find her and help her through each one of her struggles. By the end of her novel, I found myself incredibly inspired and feeling grateful for everything that I have in my life. Although Lowry seems to be ranting at times, her messages are very powerful and come across crystal clear. For that reason, I give this book four stars. Reading about someone overcoming all odds and completely turning their life around all while being a wonderful mother is extremely eye opening. Many young adults are faced with careless parents, love interests, pregnancies, abortions, depression, and homelessness throughout their lives. This story is a great read for anyone who has dealt with these issues or knows of someone who has. Lowry’s story will inspire you to do more with your life and focus on who you are instead of how you grew up and the obstacles you have faced or are facing.

“Pride over Pity,” by Kailyn Lowry, with Adrienne Wenner (Post Hill Press, 2014). Kailyn Lowry is one of the stars of the MTV series Teen Mom 2. Before that she appeared in 16 and Pregnant. Hers is the American girl’s cautionary tale. Mother is an alcoholic, father is nowhere around. Kailyn never understands what is happening, her mother brings men home all the time, she keeps changing schools, there is no stability, no security, nothing she can cling to. So she starts having sex---gets pregnant at 15, has an abortion. Pregnant again the next year, at a prom. Sex is something the boys want, it does not please her. Confusion, fear, anger, temper. She applies to MTV for the first show, and is accepted. The MTV crew is there filming her son Isaac’s birth. Kailyn is still confused. The only way she knows how to live is to fight for herself, look for security. The first partner, Jo. But after Isaac is born, she becomes involved with Jordan, which wrecks the life with Jo. Back and forth, with the TV cameras everywhere. The bullet points: abortion; tattoos everywhere; assertion by an old friend of lesbianism; cheating on boyfriends; rapes; one very disappointing visit with her father, a lowlife. She keeps expecting good things, and keeps being disappointed. The effects of stardom, the paparazzi, the lack of privacy, the cascades of criticism and nastiness online. Finally she meets Javi, who is solid, stable, not just after sex. He joins the Air Force, they get married while she is pregnant again. Life seems to be stable by now. Isaac was the first real anchor of her life. All told in gushes of words, including some good phrases, lots of counseling, apparently. Kailyn Lowry is all over the internet, facebook pages, fan pages, gossip pages, the works. I read it because Adrienne Wenner, who did the writing, is a former student and Hofstra alum. Good for her.

In my defense, I've never watched 16 and Pregnant* or Teen Mom and have zero interest in changing that. I read this as brainless can't-sleep reading.**

In the book's defense, I'm so many kinds of completely the wrong audience for this, and I didn't exactly go in expecting a read I'd rave over. So there's that.

But it is, not surprisingly, not much of a book. There was ghostwriter involvement, but...not at a particularly professional level, I guess. Very little by way of scene; very little by way of insight. It's a mix of mostly chronological storytelling and random chapters about things that are important to her (perhaps used as padding, to make the book a bit longer?). I'm not interested in picking apart Lowry, but the sense I get from the book is, well, young and not terribly introspective.

Hopefully one of these days I will get a normal sleep cycle back, and that will be the end of my 1 a.m. reading sprees.

*Except for the clip a professor showed at a lecture about the effect of the show on teenage birthrates, which I don't think counts. It was a pretty excellent lecture, though.

**Believe it or not, my current can't-sleep reading is even worse.

Pride over Pity is the journey about kailyn Lowry. Kail talks about her life and its ups and downs not only about her childhood, love life, and Pregnancy's. Kail did not grow up in a very nice place, her mom was a alcoholic and her dad left before she was born. when she was 12 she was raped by her boy friend and got pregnant, she did not want to tell anyone but know she had to. Her mom mad her get an abortion right after she found out. Kail didn't want to have an abortion but her mom told her she had to otherwise she needed to find a new place to stay. She struggled with that for many years, until high school. she started dating a boy who was 16 just like her, who was nice and respected her wishes his name was Joe. It was prom night a together they decided they where ready. That was the night she got pregnant with Issac. 9 months later she had him, but her and Joe's relationship was on the rocks. she moved in with him anyway so that Issac could be in a stable house. She soon found out that Joe was not going to work he was cheating on her with a girl he meet at his work. That was the last straw for kail she moved out with Issac and got a job at a shoe store. Where she soon meet Jordan who feel madly in love with her and Issac. But soon after that failed as well. But a few days after a fan of hers from teen mom found out where she lived and went there broke in and rapped her. Thankfully Jordan was there for her and helped her with the whole situation. A year or Two later she started talking to a boy named Javi. He lived in a different state but loved her so much that her moved to her. And there love story goes on.
I loves this book so much I got to know the real Kail instead of just the one I see on MTV's TV show teen mom 2. I also loved her story she told us and how she felt about it as well. It was just a very well book written over all. One thing that I did not like that much was that she jumped around a lot. But I would still recommend this book to anyone who watches teen mom 2 but also really to anyone who is looking for a good book.

Let's be honest, I originally wanted to read this book because of my guilty pleasure of occasionally watching and enjoying MTV's Teen Mom 2. I have my opinions on all the cast members and Kailyn is no exception. Although it seems the majority of the public hate on and judge her, I've always mind of liked Kail. I could definitely tell she didn't have an easy childhood but her teen pregnancy has caused her to grow. When I saw she had written a book I was curious.... Curious to hear her side of the story, not what MTV wanted to show.
First off, the editor did a horrible job and so did the person who proofread. There were SO MANY grammatical and proofing errors throughout the book. I'm already dyslexic and adding some of these errors forced me to re-read sections multiple times to figure out what was meant.
Now, with that gripe out of the way, let's get to the story.
Kailyn is very brave for putting her life and story out there for the public to so easily criticize. She brings up many topics that are hard to talk about.
Some of which are:
Rape
Alcoholic parents
Dysfunctional childhood and family
Eating disorders
Teen pregnancy
Mental health disorders
and more.
I definitely don't agree with everything she wrote, like her hardcore stance on atheism while I am a firm believer in God. But overall I enjoyed the insight in to her life. I learned her point of views and perspective and opinions.
I was even able to provide my husband with some insight as to why she comes off as she does on the show.
Overall, I'm happy I read it. Apart from the editorial errors, I really enjoyed it. I will be getting her second book soon.

When you get to the end of the month and still have borrows left on your Hoopla account that are expiring, you sometimes make some interesting choices in books. ;-)

In my younger days, I did watch a bit of the Teen Mom shows. Why? Probably for the train wreck that many of them were portrayed as. I say portrayed because the viewer can't possibly truly know what these people are like. We're only seeing what the directors have chosen to show us. Anyway, I was slightly curious what one of these young girls had to say. The book itself is okay - nothing spectacular. I can't say I came away liking Kailyn more than I had previously, but I did feel for this woman who has had to deal with many challenges in her life. True fans of the MTV shows will likely enjoy this one. For me, it filled a few hours while I worked. I did find it odd that Lowry didn't read the book herself for the audio version since she even mentions having done voiceovers for MTV and is/was pursuing a career in tv/radio.

16 And Pregnant and Teen Mom on MTV were once guilty pleasures of mine. I used to be mesmerized by all of these girls stories so I decided to give this book a try since Kailyn was one of the Teen Mom's I actually liked. The book was just okay. Not superbly written but it did clear up a few questions I had about her when I used to watch the show. I always wondered what the deal was with her mom and this book answered those questions. I could have done without the whole chapter on her Atheism as it got a bit preachy when she kept stating matter of factly that there is no God instead of acknowledging that those are only her beliefs and that not everyone shares them. Still, I can appreciate what she's been through even though most of her hardships could have been avoided by better choice making.

I enjoyed this book, just like I enjoyed the other Teen Mom memoirs I have read. I feel this gave a nice insight into Kailyn's mind and life, and I did learn some things about her that I didn't know, which I believe helps the reader understand her and her actions a bit better. This book did seem a bit disconnected at times because of random interjected stories in certain chapters and the rant chapters. The book started off good, but it slowly fizzled out at the end. I'm not sure if that was because of how the stories of her life were told or if it was hard to enjoy because of what has happened between her and Javi with their divorce.
