Erlöste und Verdammte: Eine Geschichte der Reformation

Rate this book

While this is a great summary of what happened in the Reformation, with interesting material on the later Reformation in particular, it suffers from the way the author disconnects the Reformation from wider economic and political change. The Reformation becomes the driving force of social change. Rather than seeing the Reformation as something that arises out of, and is driven forward, by specific conditions, and then influencing those conditions and changing them, the author ignores this dialectical approach for a one dimensional account. This is history through ideas, not materialism. Disappointing.

The book offers insight into Reformation and its consequences, but doesn't tell much about the root causes. Main focus is on Martin Luther, while Calvin is sidelined. While it is comprehensive in listing important events in early Reformation period, it doesn't describe context and is unclear on major theologian topics.
It is an allright book, but not especially enjoyable.
