This was a fantastic textbook for a political philosophy class at the University of South Florida, taught by Dr. Ofelia Schutte. The schedule of readings was as follows:
The State and Society Taylor, “Invoking Civil Society,” pages 88-99 1/19 Pateman, “The Fraternal Social Contract,” pages 73-87
Democracy Sunstein, “Preferences and Politics,” pages 126-143 Elster, “The Market and the Forum,” pages 144-158
Justice Rawls, “Justice as Fairness,” pages 185-200 Nozick, “Distributive Justice,” pages 201-228 Sandel, “The Procedural Republic and the Unencumbered Self,” pages 239-247 Young, “Polity and Group Difference,” pages 248-263
Rights Dworkin, “Taking Rights Seriously,” pages 289-301 Shue, “Basic Rights,” pages 302-316 Kymlicka, “Justice and Minority Rights,” pages 327-349 Okin, “’Mistresses of Their Own Destiny,’” pages 575-590
Liberty and Oppression Berlin, “Two Concepts of Liberty,” pages 369-386 Taylor, “What’s Wrong with Negative Liberty?” pages 387-397 Foucault, “Power, Right, and Truth,” pages 541-548
International Affairs Pogge, “Migration and Poverty,” pages 710-720 Keohane, “Global Governance and Democratic Accountability,” pages 697-709 Held, “Democracy: From City-states to a Cosmopolitan Order?” pages 674-696
The best anthology of political philosophy that I encountered during my Bachelor's degree in Political Science. It contains all the great contemporary theorists and their most important works. The only thing I missed were the editor's own reflections of the texts presented, which other anthologies often contain.
Looked promising and started out strong. Sadly the material receives very uneven treatment, heavily biased towards liberal viewpoints and topics and dismissing other views. The closing chapters give up on any pretence of wide coverage and concentrate on how to best apply redistributive justice.
Okay anthology of political philosophy for lovers in Political Science. Roundup of the best marxists and their ideas of indoctrinating new generations.
A very interesting book. Presents readings from many different authors with varied political viewpoints. A must read for anyone interested in political theory.
