The boy’s two sisters had the measles, and he was to stay with the grandmother and the great-grandfather. The great-grandfather had once been a sailor and a fisherman, and it was natural that he should tell stories and make rhymes of far places and wondrous things – the boy liked nothing better. So for a whole week there was rhyming and storytelling enough to satisfy both, with other delights in between. And then at the end there was a surprise for the great-grandfather, a surprise for which all of his 84 years had not prepared him. While there isn't a lot of plot in the book – which was written in German in 1960 and translated into English in 1964 – there is an interesting portrayal of life in the early 1900s on the Island of Helgoland (usually spelled Heligoland), where the author, James Krüss, really did grow up.
The Robber ABCConsidering that the narrator is 11, that's not bad!
“Alvin Baker carries dollars
Every Friday,” gunman hollers.
“In his jacket’s keeping lies
Money neatly organized.”
Pistols-poised, quick robbers steal,
Those uncouth villains with xanthic (yellow) zeal.
