Detective Blake Gamble works homicide at the San Jose PD. When an old college buddy goes missing, his Lieutenant orders him to pass it over to Missing Persons. But Blake knows it won't go anywhere, and despite his own caseload, he investigates. What he finds will make him wish he hadn’t…
Vanished is a good solid introduction to the character Blake Gamble who is a detective with the San Jose police department. Without giving too much away of this novelette, nothing in the book is what it appears to be. I really enjoyed the plot pivot which turned a good read into a great one in less than 60 pages! Be aware though, this is not a cosy.
A 60 page intro to the Detective Blake Gamble of San Jose PD who ignores his lieutenant’s orders and follows the trail of a college buddy who has gone missing. The first thirty pages were very promising and I thought I might have stumbled onto a series worth following. Unfortunately, the story was weak and the promised supernatural element was a little disappointing. There was enough in the opening part, however, to have me considering to go on to the second longer offering in the series.
The description says that this is a "supernatural" mystery. I'm not sure what is "supernatural" about it. However, I did enjoy the book very much. I really like the writer's style. It's very straightforward and to the point. Some people might find some of the language a bit rough, but that doesn't bother me. I definitely will look for other books by this author.
'Vanished' pulled me in from the first page and did not let go. For being a quick read, this story was packed with humor, a sense of obligation to an old friend's family and one hell of a nightmare. Blake made the perfect lead. I loved his sarcastic nature, his thought process and his ability to follow his gut when things seem off. And then he is faced with the awake version of a nightmare. Holy crap was this short story intense. I look forward to reading more from G.W. Boileau. I truly enjoy his writing style. This quick read is a must add to your tbr list. Recommended read.
