Christology and Cosmology: Models of Divine Activity in Origen, Eusebius and Athanasius
This book offers a fresh interpretation of the relation between Greek thought & ancient Christian theology thru an analysis of three foundational & controversial thinkers: Origen, Eusebius of Caesarea & Athanasius. As an urban teacher, civic apologist & ascetic bishop, each of the three theologians offered a distinctive Christian response to the religious & ecclesiastical issues of the 3rd & 4th centuries. Each cosmology & Christology therefore reveals particular concerns about individual & social identity & salvation in the developing Christian community.

I did my first book review for the journal Ancient World back around 1994 while still working at Loyola University Chicago. That was something about ancient Greek ethical thinking by, as I recall, Julia Annas--a book lost along with most of the others on its shelf to water dripping from this building's second floor. After it came out the publisher, Ares Press, started giving me other books for review, among them this one by Lyman. As is usually the case, most weren't very interesting, many--like this one--were reworked doctoral dissertations. Judging by the marginal notes, I read the thing but either didn't write a review or what I did write wasn't published.
