Captain Granger and the crew of the Warrior are called to defend the Johannesburg Sector after the Swarm attack on earth, which is devastated by the merciless aggressors, but who also leave something behind—something that will be crucial for victory. President Avery is surrounded by those bent on her assassination. And amidst the chaos and violence resounds a universal cry from United Earth and its colonies: a cry for vengeance.
My first taste of this series and what Michelle Garza and Melissa Lason have written here with VENGEANCE makes me want to read what has come before in this saga. If the other books are anything like this, then bring it on! Michelle and Melissa have captured the horrors and hopelessness of an apocalyptic war, both on and off world with the finesse and brutality for which this sister team of authors are fast becoming renowned. The battle scenes throughout are frantic and fast-paced, edge of your seat reading. Familiar with their many short stories of Horror and their incredible debut Horror novel, Mayan Blue, they have an avid fan right here. This foray into Sci-Fi still carries their trademark darkness and vicious style as seen in their Horror writings and yet they tackle this Science Fiction epic like seasoned vets. The story and characters are well developed and believable, the death count is stunning and the way they get you connected with the characters before killing them off is particularly well played, giving you that suspenseful questioning throughout of 'just who will survive this onslaught?'. Enjoyed this book immensely and highly recommend it to all Sci-Fi fans!
Wow, war is a messy business. The battle of the Constitution has been won and Earth for now has been saved. This book takes us into the next Swarm attacks. Captain Granger and XO Shelby Proctor are ready to fight in the previously mothballed ship, the Warrior! So a lot of friends are back, but we meet a slew of new ones too. I just love how all the Kindle Worlds Legacy books tie in so closely with each other... You shouldn't miss this one. It will keep you on the edge of your seat, and make you want more... Because, you know, we are human after all and looking for Vengeance!
Vengeance is set not long after Granger has returned from the singularity, between books 2 and 3. The Constitution has been lost and he is aboard the ISS Warrior, still shaken by what happened to him. This is an interesting story in that it follows multiple different storylines. Without giving away spoilers, the story is mainly focussed around Swarm attack in two system, the Francia Sector, and the Johannesburg Sector. Within these two Sectors, the story follows several characters, not only Granger aboard the Warrior and Zingano aboard the Victory, but also other main characters for this book. In the Francia Sector we get a close up look at the civilian aspect of a Swarm attack on a planet, how they react, and the impact of civilian ships trying to flee a planet under siege. This is a brutal and bloody engagement, and is a well written, emotive and engaging look at the human side of the Swarm war. As usual, we also get the input of the Military point of view as the struggle to deal with the Swarm and the civilian aspect, but this time, the Authors have given us a bit more of a look at the significant impact this has on the crew of the Warrior. In the Johannesburg Sector, things are a little different, with the civilian population grounded, but struggling with being laid siege to all the same. The story focuses on a family on the planet, as well as the conflict over the planet. Again, this is more about the actual people involved, and less about the actual warfare, making this a very emotive story. Having said all of this, I am a little unsure of the relevance of the title of the book. Without trying to give anything away, Granger was his usual self, he was not on any great crusade for ‘Vengeance’. And none of the main characters in the story either on the ships (which there weren’t any apart from the usual bridge crew), or those on the ground, sought ‘Vengeance’ either. The story was a lot more involved and seemed to talk a couple of different paths, but there was no real ‘Vengeance’ other than it being used ad-hoc in the odd sentence, and even this was out of place when used. One other issue, and I normally don’t comment on this, but it was really bad in this book, was the editing and amount of errors. It was significantly more than I would expect, even Captain Grangers name was spelt wrong. The story was pretty good overall, it is worth a read as a part of the Legacy Series, but this is not the standout in the Legacy Fleet Chronicles Series.
Having not read the previous books in this series, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but under the masterful hands of Michelle Garza and Melissa Lason, I knew all I needed to. The story pulled me in, the battle scenes were well-written and fraught with tension, just like they should be. The sub-plot about the machinations of the current political structure were interesting as well, even if they were a bit jarring when they were introduced. Overall, I enjoyed this story enough that I now want to go back and read the other books in the series, just so I can understand the nuances that are present that I didn’t catch the first time around. Well done, ladies, can’t wait to see what’s next!
Having read all of the Legacy Fleet, this iteration feels very disconnected. I was not able to get beyond the second chapter as I felt I was reading two books at the same time, and one of them was written by a child. The dialog between crew members makes you wonder who they are. Reading this book leaves one with the obvious sense that something is off.
Space opera ... not my normal read, but I enjoy it from time to time. I enjoyed this read very much and am excited to continue to read more in the series.
