WANTED FOR ARSON. CATFISHED AT SANTA'S. ROBBED AT THE FALLS. SHAKESPEARE OR DIE. DRIVER PICKS TUNES.
I'm weird. This isn't news to me or anything. I have lived in a UFO my entire life. This wasn't a coincidence. My parents believe in extraterrestrial life. You know, phone home and all that crap, and they dragged my sister Mercury and I into their mess when they named us what they named us. So it wasn't a surprise, when after getting accepted to UW and expressing my desire to actually attend, they lamented that college is "just another ploy for the government to keep tabs on you, man." In other words, we won't be helping you out, Jupiter. That's fine, though, because my best friend Frankie and I can be pretty clever chicks when we want to be. We found a way up there and it was in the form of a longtime crush, his equally cute cousin, and a kickin' set of wheels. Buckle up, Buttercup, it's going to be a bumpy ride.
Fisher Amelie resides in the South with her kick ace husband slash soul mate. She earned her first 'mama' patch in 2009. She also lives with her Weim, 'Jonah', and her Beta, 'Whale'. All these living creatures keep the belly of her life full, sometimes to the point of gluttony, but she doesn't mind all that much because life isn't worth living if it isn't entertaining, right?
Fisher grew up writing. She secretly hid notebooks and notebooks of dribble in a large Tupperware storage container in her closet as a kid. She didn't put two and two together until after college where it suddenly dawned on her, "Hey, I like writing". She's a bit dense. "No, I'm not." "Yes, you are. Put down that Oreo, your butt can't take any more." "You're rude." "Yeah, yeah." Anyway, she likes to write and has finally beaten her self-esteem into submission enough to allow herself to be scrutinized under the 'other readers' microscope. "No! No! Not a cover slip! Last time it gave me a ra...." (mumbling)
Soon graduating high school senior, Jupiter, is the daughter of some very quirky parents. She’s been crushing on Erza Brandon all through her high school years so when a mixed up college acceptance letter to UW lands in her hands, she realizes that they are heading to the same college in only a few short months. Jupiter’s parents don’t support a college career and she with the push of her hilarious best friend, Frankie, asks the once popular jock, Erza for a ride to UW at the end of the summer.
”You can ride with me,” he said. “My cousin Kai was coming down from Chicago to help me with the drive. You okay with that?” “Uh, sure,” I said in almost disbelief he’d agreed to let me tag along.”
Jupiter is an endearing heroine who is very witty and a whole lot of fun. Erza is the brooding hero who was betrayed by his girlfriend, lost his ability to play Lacrosse, all the results of a car wreck he was in during Christmas break of their junior year. Accompanying them on the drive is Erza’s wacky cousin Kai. The road trip is a whole lot of fun as is the situations they find themselves in. All the while Jupiter feels a budding connection and chemistry to Erza, yet his signals are so darn confusing.
”What are you fighting, Ezra?” I asked him. “Instinct.”
The trip and the humor was fun and confusing as a reader just knows that Erza likes Jupiter so much more than he’s letting on. I do have to mention that more than half the jokes and comments made are from my generation and not of a group of newly graduated teens (I'm a mom of a high school senior). At times the situations were very over the top yet the author and Erza do a job on Jupiter and this reader when he does come clean about his feelings, insecurities and more.
”I never liked anyone as much as I like you, Jupiter, and I don’t think I ever will.”
As the trio arrives in Chicago, Kia’s family comes into play and Erza and Jupiter finally become a couple…. well only to have one big dumb boy move mess things up and crush our Jupiter.
Erza does the impossible which is find Jupiter, apologize, and finally come clean about his fears and feelings. All of which made the ending totally kick ass playing out like some swoonworthy 80s movie that I could watch on repeat and will not forget anytime soon.
Lets meet the cast: Jupiter- witty&cute heroine from a really quirky family
Erza- brooding hero with da struggles
Kai- iconic third wheel on the road trip who totally brought the whole book together Our main character Jupiter grew up in a UFO shaped house ( which was a little ridiculous like okay maybe in Portland but then no one fuckin' noticed she lived in a UFO after living there her whole life... ??? Nope).
Jupiter definitely had a unique POV that was just totally goofy and hilarious to read.
"Seems I was going to be spending my time getting over Ezra Brandon on the trip instead of the opposite. You know, heh, heh, getting under him. I’m totally a grown-up. ’Cause that’s the opposite. The opposite of over is under. I’m a punny genius”
Well Jupiter is off to college and decides to catch a ride with Erza, who she been crushing on for a while, and his cousin Kai who is straight chilling.
The road trip is a whole adventure with ridiculous situations they find themselves in.
“Kai reached it first. “It’s not that bad!” he screamed toward us, and instant alleviation flooded through me until he reared his foot back. “No!” Ezra and I shouted, but it was too late. Kai kicked the fire. Kicked it. Like an asshole. “Oh shit!” he yelled as if in slow motion. “You’re supposed to stomp it, dumb ass!” Ezra hollered.”
There were well-developed secondary characters that were freaking hilarious and actively participated in the plot development. Honestly this dynamic trio had me burst out laughing throughout the whole book.
“I frantically looked around me. “What are you doing?” Ezra asked. “Looking for the cameras.” I patted my body. “Let’s see, I’m the virgin in this scenario, that’s painfully obvious. Kai’s the moron that ruins any plot progress.” “Come on,” Kai yelled, offended.”
Laughs, munchies, and car-seat dancing- just what every good road trip needs!
“They began shouting back and forth, hurling insults. “Boys! Stop!” I chimed in, and they both looked at me. “Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t actually think you’d stop. Continue.”
Traveling across the US to Washington allowed them to really get to know each other... “His mouth opened, presumably to speak, but I stopped him with a very convincing argument. “It’s not mine! It’s not mine!” Nailed it. “Gosh damn it, Jupiter Corey! What did I tell you?” he shouted”
Fun fact: Jupiter would probably suck at poker
The idea of leaving their high school selves in the rearview mirror really struck me and the idea of preparing for college and "adult life" was relatable and the perfect coming of age story.
“I don’t know, Jup. I don’t even know what I’m doing anymore. I can’t believe people are letting me decide what I’m going to do with the rest of my life when I can barely tie my shoes in the morning. I shouldn’t be trusted with that kind of decision-making. For God’s sake, Jupiter! I’ve killed at least three goldfish a year on average since the third grade because I forget to feed them.”
There were definitely some moments that I totally related to with life and figuring out what you want to do. But there was also a supportive friend with some (hilarious) advice that I took to heart and related to:
“get your ass up and stop feeling sorry for yourself whatever problem you’ve invented is bull and you will overcome it A few seconds pause then… You are woman! Hear you roar!”
“That was my motto. Wait until your problems compound and then rashly solve them. It always works. Mostly. ” Honestly just.... same
Overall it was an enjoyable book once you got to the actual road trip, I enjoyed watching the dynamic trio working together and just joking around.
So this is me getting the new Fisher Amelie book......
And this is me after reading it.....
I was car dancing all on the inside and the outside. So many reasons to be car dancing.
Jupiter is from a quirky family. To put it mildly. She and her sister, Mercury grew up in a UFO. Her parents think college is a government mind control plot. So when Jupiter gets accepting in school across the country, she is on her own for a way to get there.
Ezra graduated with Jupiter. Just by chance, he has been accepted in the same school and is driving his cool car to get there. Ezra is also be the guy Jupiter has been secretly in love with all through high school. Very secretly. The hunky lacrosse star that doesn't even know she is alive. Or so she thought.
"Well, well, well," Frankie said at my right, slinging an arm around my shoulder, "I do believe we have ourselves a solution to your previous problem." I took a deep, shaky breath. "Yeah, I have a ride now", I commented. Frankie laughed. "That wasn't the problem I was referring to."
So begins the most memorable road trip of Jupiter's life. As Jupiter, Ezra and his cousin, Kia, drive from Florida to Washington state. Ezra is not the same happy high school boy he was. An accident forever changed his lacrosse dreams and his outlook.
He'd grown dangerously introverted, in an unhealthy way. It wasn't unkind, just unavailable. Eventually no one tried to get his attention, his friendship, anymore. Eventually people forgot about Ezra Brandon. Eventually everyone. Except for me.
Through the miles, there are laughs, munchies, and singing. As any good road trip should. And tension.
"You probably regret so hard letting me on this trip." Ezra started the car, putting it in reverse. He threw his arm over the back of my seat and turned to see if he was clear to back up. He stared at me briefly, his eyes searching every inch of my face. It burned the skin there, heated it to the consistency of warm syrup, drugging me. "Not even a little bit," he said, his own face devoid of any emotion, confusing me.
As Jupiter and Ezra discover the country, they find themselves. They leave their high school selves in the rearview mirror. They find who they will be in the miles on the road.
...I couldn't remember a moment before that one, at least not with the same eyes. It was as if the look on Ezra's face started everything new again. No on had looked at me like ht before. It felt so final, so adult, like a line drawn in sand.....No longer was I Jupiter Corey, daughter, sister, child. I was Jupiter Corey, adult.....
I can not recommend this book enough. It a perfect coming of age read. It's funny and uplifting with just the right amount of angst. There is beautiful tension and discovery. The joy and anxiety that comes with leaving behind the person you used to be and finding the person you are meant to be. Ms Amelie has put all of that in a black GTO with a full tank of gas. Perfect.
This is my first book by Fisher and she killed it!
Oh my Gato! I annihilated this book, I couldn't get enough and I still want more. This novel was fresh fun, swoony, so stinking hilarious. I had a smirk on my face while reading and couldn't get it off. I teared up a few times, not because it was sad, just had some heart felt moments.
I don't typically read YA books, but this cover and blurb sucked me in. It was so nice not read a book where the hero and heroine were constantly 'doing it'. Your teenage daughter could read this and you wouldn't even have to worry about the content.
Jupiter is quirky, quick witted and brilliant. Ezra is dark and broody, and sweet and shy at times. Add in Ezra's cousin Kai in the car with these two and you are for a fun cross country adventure!
2016 Reading Challenge #36: A book about a road trip.
What a great story! I think I have a book hangover. I can't even think enough to write a comprehensive review.
I love this book! This one goes on my favorites shelf. The ups and downs, the stupid moves, the family, the fun, the overall feelings; perfectly written to be felt rather than merely read.
I didn't read about the trip, I experienced it with them from beginning to end. Every emotion, I felt. Every silly thing, I laughed. Every sadness and tender moment, I cried. It was a trip that was over way to soon. I would have liked a little more before the epilogue, but I know it would have only been filler and wasn't needed.
It was a fun ride and I thank Fisher Amelie for having the creative mind to write it.
Oh my gato, I love Jupiter. She grew up with unconventional parents, as you can tell by her name. She lived in a UFO for Pete’s Sake, with a sister named Mercury. Jupiter finds herself accepted to college in faraway Seattle, Washington, with parents who refuse to take her to college. When she accidentally bumps into her crush (literally) and ends up with his acceptance letter to the same college she is going to, her bestie Frankie forces her to bum a ride to Washington in his super rad ’65 GTO.
This book has the perfect amount of weird, funny, a reference to “Are You Being Served?”, and a roadtrip in a muscle car. I think this novel is my spirit-animal, not that that reference makes sense what-so-ever.
I freaking loved it!!! It is a young adult, so there is no mention of "bulges", "hard lengths", "wetness", ect ect.... And it was a nice change for once to read something that held together on it's own, without sex. It was still sweet and romantic and didn't need it for filler or to move the story along.
Jupiter comes from a kooky family. Her sister is named Mercury and they live in a house shaped like a spaceship. Her parents believe in an all natural life and aren't big on large institutions like college. Jupiter got accepted into one across the county and needs a ride there. Luckily, her longtime crush is going to the same school. He used to be the school big shot athlete until he was in a car accident, now he's a moody loner. Why does he so easily agree to let her come along? I'm sure you can guess or just slowly figure it out with her.
His cousin comes along for the ride to help until they reach his house where they will take a little break to rest with the aunt and uncle and all the other cousins that live in Chicago. All of the side characters were fun and likable. I could read a book for each of them. (though I don't think there are any plans for that)
You felt like you were on this crazy road trip with them. Lots of little and big things happen along the way. It was all just a ton of fun. Don't let it being a YA book stop you from giving it a try. And super bonus to me ***spoiler*** it has an epilogue that takes place 13 years later so you have no doubt how Jupiter's life goes.
On a side note - I love this cover. It is super cute and it perfectly depicts of Jupiter.
"You are excitement and harmony all in one, Jupiter."
This was super cute and quirky. Jupiter was a unique perspective and I liked her witty and silly ways. And even though I thought the original push to put the two main characters together in a car was cliche, I loved Kai and their travels and trials and getting to know each other. Adorable and fun, it was a quick easy read.
Adorable! Fisher Amelie is one of my go-to authors. I will read anything she writes. And Jupiter was hilarious. I love a character who does not realize how goofy she is and has no problem wearing a C-3PO one-piece.
I was laughing so much at this book. Her puns were cute and I love Jupiter. Ezra was dark and broody, which I love in a male character, but had me cracking up at him and Kai. I recommend this book! I give it a 10!
Fisher Amelie is one of my favorite authors and I absolutely feel in love with her newest book. Jupiter and Ezra are so wonderful as individuals that coming together as a couple is just perfect. Throw into the mix family and friends and you have an amazing story that is not only funny but smart and enjoyable. Great book, must read.
This was the first book I read by this author. I loved it! I laughed so hard that I was in tears at one point. It's a great read and I'm looking forward to more by her!
I don’t give away 5 stars often. I also rarely read a standalone book and wish it were a series. But this awesomely amazing book has me wishing I could give it 10 stars and that it was a neverending story!
I haven’t had such a great reading experience in forever!
Seriously.
This book had me on a high right the way through it. The story was light, fun, flirty - HILARIOUS! I couldn’t contain my giggles whilst reading it.
Thumbs UP
Roadtrip! Who doesn’t love a good roadtrip story? I haven’t read one this fun ever. The antics these three got up to – the catfish, the arson, the hitchhiker – so many lols.
Jupiter was the star of this book. She was so damn lovable and such a hoot! I loved her quirky personality, and her jokes were all the same kind of cheesy one liners that live in my mind (the author clearly has an awesome sense of humour). I wish she were real and that she was my bff – life would never be boring.
Ezra – SWOON! Nuff said.
The secondary characters were also top-knotch. Frankie was just as funny as Jupiter, only I’m not so sure I could hand her as a bff. I’d be beet-red 24/7. Kai was a lovable ditz whom I also adored. I would happily read a story about either one, or both, of those two.
Thumbs DOWN
My only complaint is that it ended. I would have gladly read a book about Jupiter and Ezra’s college years. Then their engagement years. Then their pre-parent years... Pretty much anything really.
Final Thoughts
I’m shocked to discover this is my first read by this author, but it sure as shit won’t be the last! I have several of her other stories and they have all just leapt to the top of my TBR shelf. I can’t friggin wait to read more!
Ohhhhh my Gato! THIS BOOK IS AWESOME! It's been a while since a book made me laugh so much as this one... Pretty easy to guess I loved everything about it...
Let's start with the characters.... Jupiter was craaaaaaaaaayyyons crazy but super fun! she was the quirkiest goofiest dorkiest funiest girl I had ever read about... It's so funny because my sister and I tend to sing songs when you want to say a phrase that is actually a famous part of a song (Like when you want to apologize so you just sing Justin Bieber's Sorry hahahaha)... When I read the "Chim Chimney Chim Chim Chee roo" I almost peed my pants because I was laughing so hard... could totally be BFFs with Jupiter... but it wasn't just the funny side of her, she was a great friend, very mature but also silly, she knew her family was weird yet still felt proud and love them... she was innocent but didn't take shit from anyone... I really like female characters like her... Then Frankie came along and the crazy went up a notch and you mixed Jupiter with Kai and conversations turn weird and funny and all around hilarous... I loved that Ezra was the most serious one but not a downer... he still kept up with them... The story was super light, even though Ezra's accident was a major part of him closing off from everyone (even himself) it wasn't that dramatic... This was romantic, fun, light and a hell of a ride! Can we have a Kai related book please?
Crazy fun book. It takes a talented author to write something so weird yet awesome!!! I'm pretty sure Ezra wanted Jupiter to get in the car lol. The blurb made absolutely no sense, which made me all the more intrigued. And Jupiter? Really quirky, pretty brave, full of life, and romantic chickenshit. Did I mention she has a sister named Mercury and her family lives in a UFO?? Yup! Then there is Ezra. Super popular, had a loving girlfriend, in sports, and a regular high school stereotype. Then there was an incident. Ezra becomes broken, moody, quiet, and hermit. He's prideful, stubborn, confused, and afraid of girls. Thanks to happenstance, these two are tossed together with Ezra's meddling cousin across the country on a road trip. Did I mention road trips rock? Yup! I definitely don't want to give anything imperative away, so bottom line: read this damn book. You won't be sorry and will be saying 'get in the car Jupiter' for a long time to come because, yeah it's so strange, it's memorable. Ten glittery stars, but I'm only allowed to give it a realistic five glittery stars. Kudos to Amelie and a new author for me to indulge in.
I love Fisher 's books. There's always something about them that is really relatable. The humor in Jupiter, I immediately connected with and couldn't help but laugh at.
Definitely a fast and enjoyable read. But I was left with a few loose ends regarding other characters. Not that it made the book any less enjoyable. I could live with some daily snark between Jupiter and Ezra & Kai in my life.
And I guess it's a good thing to be left wanting to know more. It means I was actually attached and invested in the characters and their lives.
Get In The Car Jupiter is an simply a fun, flirty and funny book. This book made me smile from beginning to end. Jupiter is such a fun loving quirky character and Ezra is an old soul who is charmed by Jupiter's love of life. These two college bound kids drive off to college together and they have the best road trip ever! What a 5 star fun flirty ride!!!!! For more indie book reviews: Myindieauthorfix.com
Love. This book made me laugh and made me almost cry once. I loved every page of it. I'd say it was my second favorite Fisher Amelie book (Vain is my number one), but they are just all too great to choose a second favorite. You just can't go wrong reading one of Fisher's books. #fantastic
First off, I love this cover so much. It was one of the things that drew me to the book, that and I have previously enjoyed Fisher Amelie's books. Where to start with this book, it was awesome. It had all my favorite things from unrequited love that turns into actual love, road trips and fun along the way. We first met Jupiter - yes that's her real name, and her sister is called Mercury and get this - they live in a UFO house on a lake. Jupiter is about to graduate from college and has never kissed a guy but has always had her sights set on Ezra. Years ago, Ezra was the type of guy who was the life of the party but then tragedy happened, and his whole personality took a 360. Now with only weeks left, Jupiter gets up the courage to talk to Ezra, and one thing leads to another, and they discover that they are both A) enrolled in the same course in college and even better B) heading to the same college. Roadtrip time - Ezra, Jupiter, and his cousin Kai are on their way to Kai's house for some fun times before College, but to get there they will have a heck of a ride. From a Hitchhiker who likes to get naked, setting a bush on fire and ending up on the news to fancy dress parties. Everything about this book was awesome, and after reading it, I wanted to be Jupiter. I adored her character so much. I even enjoyed the side characters and want a book about Milo now which is Kai's brother, also after reading this I have to admit I wanted a yummy cheeseburger. If you are wanting an awesome New Adult Romance to conclude your 2016 reading list with then what are you waiting for - hurry up and check out Get in the Car, Jupiter as you will not be disappointed.
I have a confession. When Fisher Amelie releases a book, I buy it right away, but i don't read it. No. I hoard it, until the time i need it most. Because this author can bring me out of a funk like no other. The dialogue is so clever, and full of pop-culture/movie references that when i "get" them, i feel like I'm Winning. And the banter! Oh the banter is just the thing to bring a smile to my heart. I can count on quirky, fabulous characters that I totally fall for. Song references that i must stop and look up on You Tube immediately. And mentions of fashion designers that i Google until i find a pic of the outfit that the author desribed in the story. Those fantastic outfits actuality exist, and bring the character even more to life for me. This book was no exception, and was sheer perfection of the bring-me-joy variety. Not to say the author doesn't bring all the feels into the story, but at the end I'm left so very happy. Perfect!
