Grit & Shadows #5

Mime: A Grit & Shadows Story

Rate this book
Crime-noir meets ghost-horror in this short thriller.

Mobster thugs Pauli and Mouse come across a street clown late at night who seems to know more than he’s telling. Maybe too much.

But you know the best thing about killing a mime? No one hears him scream.

Then again, by the time this story is over, it won’t be him screaming.

The Grit & Shadows Collection can be read in series or with each volume standing on its own dark merits. A fiendish witches’ brew of gritty crime, urban fantasy, vampire horror, and sci-fi noir.
• Waking in the Dark – Four tales of temptation and terror
• Kiss of the Maiden – Five stories of gritty heroes and bloody resolve
• One-Eyed Jacks – A novel of urban fantasy, crime noir, and Asian myth
• Grit & Shadows Omnibus – The complete series in one deliciously dark volume

If taking a college fencing class, eating from the trash can, and smelling like an animal were qualifications for becoming a sword-swinging barbarian, J. D. Brink might be Conan’s protégé.
Instead, he joined the Navy… twice. He’s served aboard a warship in the Pacific, collected intel from foreign submarines, trained corpsmen to save Marines, and cared for patients at hospitals in Kuwait and Japan.
Today (New Years, 2023), he’s a civilian, a freelance writer, nurse, and educator. They ask that he not wear the Viking helmet in front of actual people…

Pauli and Mouse are walking through their area at night when they come across a lone Mime pretending he is in a box where an old dumpster used to be. The dumpster was removed after so many incidents of bodies where found in it. The neighborhood is not safe and these two thugs, get some added laughter over this mime's appearance. They start laughing and talking about people they killed and the mime seems to know how these people had died. They keep messing with the mime saying he will keep his mouth shut right. Well the mime does not need to talk to take care of business.

It is a short story. It definitely was something different but not surprising. Overall, I did enjoy it and want to see more of that mime.

This story is so fresh and original. The characters are fun and well built, the setting eerie and well described. The ending is a great horror twist. And I loved the tale in the 'About the Author' section. Make sure not to miss it.

Great story

I could visualize the mime and it put a smile on my face. I could also imagine the looks on the faces of the thugs. The ending was unexpected but satisfying. Recommended

This short story started out OK, but then I saw it isn't my cup of tea. I am sure there are many readers who will enjoy this though. It's a matter of preference.

Good short story

Liked the one story. The rest, was advertising for other books and stories. Would have liked, to at least, read another story.

Interesting quick read

Ending is a little obscure, but was a complete surprise. Definitely an author I will read more of his works.

*A FREE, quick, and fun read. I hate to keep dropping reviews on MY OWN work--that's really not how it's supposed to work--but it seems I can't add a book without also saying what I think of it. So...

It was a very fun short story. The mime creeped me out and it was very suspenseful. The part when blood slit throat was mentioned left an uncomfortable feeling around my neck.
