2025 Review: Still goddamn good. It's just a lot of fun. This time we have a new foe, Black Dragon, who royally messes up the rangers. It's fun to watch them scramble and work together to try and overcome a force that seems like a legit threat. Overall fun and exciting with a great background issue for Zack.


2018 Review: Goddamn it, I can't believe how much I'm digging Mighty Morphin Power Rangers...

So yeah, this is great. You have a little bit more backstory on a Zack which gives him a much needed boost in interest. You have a high rush pace of this Black Dragon creature who is just fucking up the rangers so quickly it's sad. This has a zoid battle, a huge fight with just power rangers, and of course a ending that leaves you going 'Whoa."

Good: Loved the interactions between the rangers. They have a few ups and downs like any group of friends but it works. The fights are high end fun and the art is freaking great. I also loved the ending which is something I've never seen.

Bad: The Rita plotline seems odd, as she isn't really doing much this time.

Overall a ton of fun. I really can't believe I'm invested in a power ranger story but I'm glad. A 4 out of 5.

I loved every issue in this graphic novel. So many memories with modernization and new story lines. They managed to take a classic and turn it on it's heels to create this masterpiece. I highly recommend reading Power Rangers Vol. 2!

I keep being sucked into this series by the insanely cool covers, unfortunely the inside art is not on par, it has good panels, but too sketchy for my taste. Storywise this is starting to get fun, way more mature than the original material.

It is a strange world we live in where the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers becomes one of the most solid comic book series being published today. Kyle Higgins along with some truly talented artists and colorists has created an action pack, edge of your seat adventure for the original Mighty Morphin crew. I was not the biggest Power Ranger fan growing up in the 90s . My younger brother was more of the big fan but hey our parents taught us to share, especially when it came to TV time. So learn a lot about this series watching it with my bro when it was on the tube. I found a lot of the plots and effects silly and it at first appeared to be just a live action Voltron show. But when the show introduced Tommy Oliver aka the Green Ranger and later Lord Zed the show became more epic. Higgins takes what fans enjoyed most about the series and expands on it with deeper character development and more explanation on how the Rangers powers and universe works all in a nice comic book series. This volume is even better as the last. We find the Rangers are losing in their battle with the evil sorceress Rita Repulsa. Her ascension to power is all thanks to the emergence of a mysterious monster warrior, Black Dragon. The Blue Ranger, Billy, gets captured in the Rangers battle with Black Dragon while the other rangers are morphed away from their foe leaving Angel Grove and the world in the hands of Rita. Things get really bad for our heroes when the Red, Yellow, Pink, & Black Rangers are cut from the Morphin Grid, the source of their powers. Now only the Green Ranger who's powers work differently must face their enemies alone. Just who is Black Dragon? How will the Rangers get their powers back? And is the world doomed to be destroyed by Rita Repulsa? All this makes for a truly exciting story. I love the way Higgins gives the reader more background into how each character thinks and how well paced the action is in this book. The ending was very surprising and I can not wait to see what happens next. This is definitely one of the best licensed series being published in comics. It is very ironic how an original superhero TV show has become a truly great superhero comic. I hope Boom Studios considers building this universe by writing books for Masked Rider, Bettleborgs and VR troopers. Also great TV series from the creators of Power Rangers.

Collecting the next four issues in the new Power Rangers ongoing, this second volume delivers as much fun and nostalgia as before, but moves away from the source material to give us some really great stuff that only comics can provide.

Issue 5 opens the volume with a spotlight on Zack. I'd say he's an underdeveloped character in the show, but let's be fair, most of the characters not named Tommy or Kimberly were mostly defined by just their one trait, so having an entire issue just to see how Zack reacts to Rita Repulsa and her Green Ranger plans is going to do a hell of a lot more for him than the show did.

Issues 6-8 up the ante as Rita's newest ally, the Black Dragon, attacks the Rangers and basically wipes the floor with them. I probably mentioned it before in my previous review, but it's so awesome to see what the Power Rangers are capable of without budgetary constraints. The stakes feel extremely high, which you'd never expect since it's very rare to feel like the Rangers aren't going to win in the end on the show, and the action is intense as hell, with great cliffhangers.

Hendry Prasetya continues to turn out great work, his anime-inspired visuals suiting the material very well, and Thony Silas' fill-in issue slipping into the schedule seamlessly.

There are also the Continuing Adventures Of Bulk And Skull filling out the back pages, and these are good for a chuckle, but not really much of substance. Then again, few one-page comics are. It seems like they're building up an ongoing narrative though, so maybe reading more than 4 at once will make a difference later on.

I really hate that Boom makes their volumes 4 issues long. This cuts off right in the middle of a story, especially considering the price. Also, Rita’s boobs are drawn constantly facing different directions so someone could use an anatomy lesson.

Still can't understand how I'm enjoying a power rangers comic book that much. Solid story, even with the limitation of being true to the original series, with relatable charactes and unlike the TV show, real distraction.

Like the TV show it's a lot of dumb fun, and this volume definitely has that in spades. I don't want to spoil anything, but the series is a couple of years old so it is a good time to jump in. The drama from the team is engaging enough,but the dumb action man that's the bread and butter. Anything to do with Bulk and Skull though. I skip right over that. I don't like them. I don't find them funny. Luckily the issue that they are in are at the very end, and it's a little one shot. So I skip it. Overall a fun super hero book. I don't think you have to be a fan of the show to enjoy this. I was as a kid, but I could careless now. I just want some funny super hero antics in my life.

Go! Go! Power Rangers! This is the second volume of the Boom Comics series, written by Kyle Higgins, who is probably most known for his work on the Nightwing New 52 series.

Vol. 2 does not exactly pick off where Vol. 1 left off. At the end of Vol. 1, Billy was kidnapped by Rita, and Tommy and Kimberly are trapped on the Moon face to face against the Black Dragon. At the start of Vol. 1 it goes back in time before the Green Ranger was even around. Zach is walking home from school alone, when he is kidnapped by Rita. She then tries to seduce him into joining her side, and it was just really bizarre. It felt like the same story of Tommy being tricked, and I wasn't really sure what the point was. Maybe they wanted to show another side of Zach being in the shadow of Jason? Who knows...

The next issue picks up where Vol. 2 left off. Thank goodness! I was starting to worry! The story then follows the Rangers, who are eventually stripped away of their powers. Rita also gains control of the original 5 Zords, which she uses to make a stronghold presence across the globe. Rita is giving every country 48 hours to surrender or she will destroy them. None of the Rangers can do anything except for Tommy who still has his powers. Also, Zordon has been destroyed. Trini believes that he may be restored, but without Billy, she is unsure how they will do that.

All in all it is an interesting read. I do like that Zordon had a bigger presence in this volume. Zordon was barely in volume 1 at all, which is a shame because he is definitely one of the most intriguing characters.

The artwork feels a little bit more rushed than the first volume, which is my major complaint. Some of the characters faces aren't even drawn in at times, which is a shame. I'm a fan of attention to detail, and it's always sad when little things like that get passed by. I really hope the artwork improves in Vol. 3, because besides story, artwork is really what graphic novels are all about.

I like that we get to see more of the Command Center. It’s great to not have the small budget the TV show had and so more things can be done.

Also, it’s mad that Bulk and Skull are in a segment at the end of each issue.

Eh. I was pretty disappointed in this. There appeared to be some kind of time jump or story inconsistency with the first story, which was fine at first. I love that it focused on Zach, and I loved the resolution. But then the next issue not only jumps forward again, but it does so in such a fast-paced way that I found it super confusing. It also gave me no time to be concerned about the characters or what was happening to them before dumping the information on me that all these bad things had happened to Billy, Zordon, and Alpha. And while I typically like that these are short volumes, it also meant that the story didn't wrap up in this one, leaving me on the fence about whether I even want to pick up the next one. The best part, honestly, was the interactions between the Rangers. They remain the characters I first enjoyed as a child, and if I continue the series, that will be why.

Much shorter than Volume 1 so I was sort of like..."WAIT, THAT'S IT?" but I still like where the story is going, and with each volume another Ranger reveals some more in-depth character motivations which I enjoy. I don't often read comics because the nature of the storytelling can feel too slow for me which is why I prefer graphic novels generally, but I'm in this one for the long haul, obviously.

There's some great set up for stuff to come in here that I missed the first time around and I'm really glad I got to take another look at these issues to find it.

In this volume we see how Rita once went after Zack before Tommy for the position of the Green Ranger.

The Rangers are fighting the Black Dragon & lose Billy, the Blue Ranger in the fight. Billy wakes up in Rita's dungeon. His fellow prisoner is none other then Goldar!

Ohohohoho this one was so good!
The plot was super interesting and took a different direction than I thought it would. As always I loved the Ranger dynamics and the whole theme of the group slowly becoming a unified team. They’re so precious I love them
I also love the way Billy as a character is treated by the team. Like it would have been so easy for the writers to make Billy kinda the weakest link because “he’s just the nerdy, smart one! he can’t take care of himself and needs to be protected by the strong main characters.” But they don’t do that! Even for a second! Yeah Billy has doubts about his place in the team and yeah they have to consistently remind him that they need and want him there but it’s never played for laughs. And even when something happens and Billy gets separated from the team, the team never is like “we have to save Billy because ahh he’s just a kid he can’t handle all this action!” Instead, they do make it a priority to go get Billy back but they trust that he’ll be okay if they go safe the world first. Idk it just means a lot to me that for once the soft spoken nerdy character isn’t constantly played off as weaker and less capable.
This series always astounds me with how much it plays with stereotypes and character tropes. It makes it so clear that the writers believe that all types of personalities and people are equally valid and important to the world. I love it so much

I really enjoyed reading this, with a few caveats. As a kid, I really loved the original Power Rangers show, so it's pretty awesome seeing a comic version that appears to be made with sincerity and humor. The art is great, the story feels more serious, but still with a sense of humor. The Rangers sometimes make jokes, but it's not overwhelming and obnoxious--the recent Power Rangers Aftershocks didn't quite get the balance as good as this one did.

However, reading this book is really frustrating because it's trying to tell stories around what happened in the show. What I mean is, the first issue in this volume sets up the Green Ranger saga, but then the second issue in this volume takes place AFTER the events of the Green Saga, skipping over a TON of story beats. So basically we don't get introduced to Tommy, we don't get introduced to the evil Green Ranger, nor the Dragon Zord, nor the ensuing struggles between the Rangers, nor the eventual turn where the Green Ranger goes good, nor the final defeat of Scorpina. It was a huge case of storytelling whiplash for me, and was so confusing--I haven't seen the show in YEARS and YEARS.

Still really enjoyed it. The new Black Dragon is pretty menacing, though he looks like a souped-up version of an EVA unit. And there is a great Bulk and Skull comic in the back. Super fun!

Following on from the incredible Vol. 1, we catch up with the rangers just as Rita enacts yet another plan to conquer earth, this time she’s helped by the mysterious Black Dragon.

I adored the first Volume and I was excited to begin reading this follow on. To be honest, I immediately started on this after reading the final page of Vol. 1. The writers once again carry on their delivery of a superb story which will keep you on your toes and frantically trying to work out how the rangers will combat this latest threat.

I won’t go too deeply into it as this is a sequel volume and you need to have read the first in order to truly appreciate it. Artistically you will experience the same quality as in the first edition. Beautiful vibrant colours pitched against darker backgrounds. The emotions in this volume are palpable and I was definitely shocked in regards to how the rangers planned to get out of the mess without Zordon or Alpha.

The Power Rangers comic book series continues to fire on all cylinders. I find myself drawn in with every page and every little detail. I have not been this absorbed in a comic book series in a long time.

The standout portion of this volume has to be the Black Dragon. This new monster is positively frightening to look at. As mentioned in my volume one review, this looks like something straight out of Evangelion. And his motives seem to be just as sinister as he continues to attack the Rangers and beat down their spirits.

The side issue about Zack getting offered the Green Ranger power coin is something very intriguing to me. These little details really help to flesh out characters more than the TV show did, and Zack seems like a logical person to try to enchant with the Green Ranger powers given how he reacted to the defeat of the monster in this issue. I really enjoy how the writer is trying to give us something really different within the Power Rangers universe.

I cannot wait to continue this series. I await each issue's release eagerly.

This series remains really fun to read, and the art is absolutely stunning. I’ve seen rumors and hints about what’s to come, but I didn’t know for certain. The new Black Dragon villain was very intimidating, and even though I feel pretty safe that these characters will make it out alive, when the comic starts to deviate from the source material, it still makes for a gripping story hook.

There’s also an interesting flashback issue that shows Rita trying to recruit Zach before going after Tommy. I enjoyed seeing her approach, and, if I trusted her at all, I could almost see how she could maybe gain someone’s trust, at least enough to then brainwash them to serve her.

The sequence with the Dragonzord on the moon is probably a real highlight here. Even though I’ve never been a huge Tommy fan, it’s hard not to like him in this book.

The art is still fantastic. I love the dynamic style and how it makes everything pop so dramatically. Definitely looking forward to more volumes that I recently picked up.

Review: God! What a series! I love this run so fricking much. Watching the rangers get their faces wrecked and losing not only the command center but Zordon and Alpha is so intense. Love how this series matures the concept of the show and with such a great execution too.

Story Recap: It is revealed Rita originally approached Zack to be her Green Ranger. When she realized she couldn’t break the Rangers she decided to make her own - setting her sights on Tommy. After the command center gets destroyed and the Rangers lose Zordon and Alpha - Billy gets kidnapped by the Black Dragon and the Rangers are trapped in the pocket dimension without access to their powers. After a failed attempt to rescue Billy from Rita’s Moon Base - Jason and Tommy barely manager to escape the Black Dragon but make it back after managing to detach his arm. Tommy uses the Black Dragon energy to connect the team to his coin - creating 4 new green rangers with their original dinosaur power coins.

This is a great improvement. It starts a little oddly with a flashback to before Tommy joined the Rangers with Zack getting tempted with the Green Ranger power, but it quickly goes wrong for Rita and she sets her sights on Tommy instead. The main plot though is about a terrifying new monster, the Black Dragon, that destroys the Ranger Command Center and cuts all the Rangers save for Tommy off from their power source, the Morphin Grid. Even worse, the Black Dragon kidnaps Billy. With Rita threatening the entire world with the Rangers' own Megazords, things look bleak for the Rangers. I loved this volume. The action's amazing, the stakes are high and I don't even mind Tommy getting a disproportionate amount of focus here because they found a good way to justify it. The Black Dragon oozes power and evil while still looking plausible as Super Sentai villain, a bit like Azald from Dobutsu Sentai Zyuohger but scarier. My only problem is the action can be difficult to follow at times, a big problem when action plays such a large role.

I think my major complaint so far with these first two volumes is the time in which they start and where this storyline seems to kick off as a prelude to the previous volume but also not really an origin of the Rangers story so far either. It’s made, for someone who did use to watch the first few seasons of the show, this all a little confusing in terms of where everyone is in terms of their character arcs and relationships. However, on the whole, the main arc has fairly strong writing and some compelling twists updating the plot and characters into the graphic medium. The hardest sell here might be that all of Earth seems aware of Rita and yet they’re somehow seemingly content with their reliance on these 5/6 unnamed Rangers protecting the whole planet since no earthly military can fight against these…sizable Kaiju? Again, hard to swallow, but it just comes with the territory.

The quality remains the same with these books. Kyle Higgins really thought this out. I loved the section with Zack in the beginning. I was fooled to think he was gonna take Rita’s offer, only to trick her and bring his intel back to Zordon. It seems this series and GGPR are writing him as the guy with his eyes peeled — sharper than the rest and I like that because he was my favorite when I was a kid. This is basically the start to the Black Dragon arc — they do a good job of making you feel hopeless for Angel Grove. Higgins was clever in his plotting — the timer, the green crystal, breaking Black Dragon’s arm and Tommy using it to not only disperse his powers to the rest but to also use it to access the grid. Well thought out imo.

Surge o Dragão Negro. Um oponente misterioso que está ajudando a Rita Repulsa em seus planos de dominação mundial, mas parece que ele tem seus próprios planos. E os Rangers não podem contar com a ajuda do Zordon ou dos Zords, além do Billy ter sido feito refém pela Rita. Em completa desvantagem, Tommy tem uma ideia ousada que pode ajudar eles a reverter o que está acontecendo! Esse segundo volume é bem divertido. Esse gibi foi completamente subestimado quando saiu lá fora e era uma das melhores coisas sendo publicadas por lá. Pena que chegou aqui por uma editora bem pequena e que está tendo bastante dificuldades em continuar publicando. Espero que ela consiga superar essas dificuldades e continue publicando esse material bacana.
