Welcome to the Ballroom, Vol. 5 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next five chapters (17–21) of the on-going manga series.

This tankōbon has Tatara Fujita return to life as a student and has graduated from middle school and enters high school. Unfortunately, he is sandwiched in-between Muroi Takeshi – one of his middle school bullies who sits behind him and Chinatsu Hiyama, who calls his interest in competitive ballroom dancing as lame and sits in front of him. However, she is a closeted dancer as Fujita finds her at a dance event where his mentor, Kaname Sengoku is dancing. Furthermore, Gaju Akagi is his sempai, which he befriends – frenemies of sorts.

Meanwhile, Kiyoharu Hyōdō has healed up and returned to dancing with his partner Shizuku Hanaoka at the same dancing competition where Gaju Akagi and his sister Mako Akagi are dancing in. It is revealed that Hyōdō is back in form despite his convalescence.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Tomo Takeuchi. Chinatsu Hiyama is an interesting character and is obviously going to be the future partner of Tatara Fujita. While claiming and pronouncing her dislike of competitive dancing, she obviously and secretly loves the sport and was once a competitive dancer, but her back story is yet to be revealed.

All in all, Welcome to the Ballroom, Vol. 5 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.

Cuarto libro del Reading Rush. Challenge 3.

The new girl seems a little annoying at first but I think I’m eventually going to like her.

I found this manga, because of the anime adaption that premiered in the summer of 2017. I am not a big fan of sports anime/manga, but I do dance Salsa socially. This being a series about a kid who competes in competitve ballroom dancing intrigued me. I don't dance competitively, but I do go to social dances with those who do (for Latin dance in this case). I was curious of this series and its commentary on "dancesport" in Japan.

The main protagonist is a guy going to highschool and trying to find a purpose or hobby. He happens on competitive ballroom dancing and has to learn how to navigate that world. That sums up the the series in-general, but not this volume specifically. I watched the anime adaption of the first 4 volumes and now have decided to start picking-up with the manga. There are some marked differences in the details of the manga & anime (this is normal: anime's usually streamline certain things for time constraints or pad things out so not to go past the manga (no problem here since the manga has been published for a few years now)), but the story is essentially the same.

After his first official competition in the Tenpei Cup, Tatara Fujita is now hyped to go further in dancesport and now has an incentive. He also finds a fiery, complicated permament dance partner. This volume is our introduction to her. The art-style in portraying the dancing is interesting and explains the look of the anime. I will be following this book as it is published stateside and have been enjoying this series overall.

Okay, here it is

I read most of the manga blissfully wrapped up in Hanaoka/Hyodo but for this volume I want to get real about the major issues this manga has: not only does it make a mockery out of its fat characters and trans characters, it also explicitly throws Filipinos under a fetishist spotlight (via Sengoku Kaname). I'm glad creative teams in the anime decided to cut those parts out, deeming it unnecessary (which it is!!!!) and I'm not inciting a manga vs anime debate lol the anime itself has a lot of problems but I'm not even gonna get started on that because this review is about the manga.

Anyway as usual I'm gonna go back to my Hanaoka/Hyodo tunnel vision carry on

P.S.

This was probably my least favourite volume. Still some neat dance stuff and the odd friendship Tatara is forming with gaju is entertaining. But the girl in his class is frustrating. I get she has to end up as his dance partner but her hot and cold attitude while realistic for the age range is still annoying.
Library doesn't currently have the rest so unsure if I'll ever get the chance to continue the series.

I want more people to find this series. It doesn't quite beat my favorite sports anime series, (Haikyu!!, Chihayafuru, and Yuri on Ice!!!) but it's right on par with the best of the best when it comes to well balanced sports anime. I'm especially excited to finally meet my favorite character of the series, Chinatsu! I love how she challenges Tatara, while having her own story and problems to deal with.

Overall a great volume!

The manga continues, and we see some movement happening in the time.

For the first 4 volumes, and a small part of the 5th volume, Fujita has been in Middle School, but not any more. He graduated, and is now going to a high school, were he meets a new character who I have no doubt, will play a big role in Fujita's life, not only in school, but also in dancing.
I loved to see Fujita graduate from Middle School, it was about time, don't get me wrong, but I felt there was a need to finally move time forward. The only way we could truly tell the time was with the contests that pop up every so often in the manga, and sure we saw Fujita grow. He wasn't slacking that much, he worked hard, his posture changed, but in this one we see him also grow older. He is now in the final part of school, because I don't know if he will continue after High School. That is just a feeling I have. I think that if Fujita wants, that he might pick to go for dancing professionally, or go to a dance school in the end. I will be looking forward to that time, there is still a long way for Fujita to go, so we will have some time before we will know what his future will hold.

As I said, we have a new character, and I have to say I didn't like her that much. At times I saw a totally different girl underneath the bitchy surface, but I am just not convinced of her reasons to act the way she did, and if she is waiting for Fujita because she likes him, or if she does it for that famous dancer.
It will be interesting to see how it will continue, though I do hope that she will lose her bitchy behaviour and starts to be honest and kind.

There are several contests in this manga, and I enjoyed seeing them happen. I think an anime for this one would be perfect, now I can imagine the movements in my mind, but I would love to see them on screen. Not sure how it would look, if they adopt the style of the manga (sharp/weird angles, mangled bodies) it might be more of a horror show than a drama/slice of life/dance show.

There were several hilarious situations which caused me to laugh hard and shake my head at the silliness.

I was also glad to see that brother/sister combination in dancing come back. Yay! They look fabulous together, I am so happy for both of them.

Yes, again, as I have said multiple times, at times the art is lovely, but when they start dancing the art transforms into something that I am not liking. The characters look monstrous, scary, and as if someone threw them in a blender and put it on the highest level.
It is a shame. I get that dancing is probably not the easiest to capture, but I am sure that you can capture it more gracefully than this.

I will be reading volume 6 soon, as I am curious about the dancing + the new girl.

This is classified as my favourite sports manga. Tatara surprised me this time around, with a very feminist concept, which is questioning the role of the female dancer in ballroom dancing. And he totally earned my respect. I knew that this is a great sports manga when it actually made me want to know more about ballroom dancing(just like when I read Nodame Cantabile-totally fell in love with classical music.) So yeah, this is one hell of a manga, the art style is totally awesome too! 4 stars!
