USA Today Bestselling author, Shelley lives in Auckland, New Zealand with her husband and a rambunctious puppy.
Typical New Zealanders, Shelley and her husband left home for their big OE soon after they married (translation of New Zealand speak - big overseas experience). A year long adventure lengthened to six years of roaming the world. Enduring memories include being almost sat on by a mountain gorilla in Rwanda, lazing on white sandy beaches in India, whale watching in Alaska, searching for leprechauns in Ireland, and dealing with ghosts in an English pub.
While travel is still a big attraction, these days Shelley is most likely found in front of her computer following another love - that of writing stories of romance and adventure. Other interests include watching rugby and rugby league (strictly for research purposes), being walked by the dog, and curling up with a good book.
Well, the premise of this story was so good! I t didn't catch me in the synopsis, but started to during the first few pages!
This is a re-released book that starts out with Kate, who works from home. She answers the door to Lane who accuses her of being a gold digging girls who has made false claims of him fathering her son. It's all over the news rags & she has no idea. This actually caught my attention & I thought it would be a great story after all.
Pshht! Holy cow! DUDE!! A boy gets kidnapped! You get a call from kidnappers & you sit at home alone? Your friends aren't all out there looking! Your friend says "Call if you need me!" WTF!! Seriously!! Are you kidding!! Hell! You meet your neighbors! You search! Police go looking! Put it on TV! Not wait a couple days calling the police with them saying "oh, sorry. No news yet." WHAT!! ESPECIALLY after you have vandals, people planting stolen gnomes in your yard & shipping you a live rat!! WOW!! Totally off the wall weird reaction to a situation!!
Anyway, Lane cannot remember sleeping with the mother of this child, so he jointly goes on a quest to determine if he's really the boys father! Then the letter. How could a guy/girl relationship be so backwards he can't remember? WEIRD!! But he does later... After he gets clubbed "OHHH YAAAA!!" HAHAHA!
Obviously there is a HEA after a VERY short time span. Which ended well, but getting there, I had to reread moments to see if I read that right... Oh well.
All in all, I was momentarily entertained & I hope she gets it right next time. She'll get one more shot from me, because this book had potential. Hopefully the reactions will be congruent to the events in the next book!
This summary drew me right in. And then I was let down. I love that "didn't know about the baby trope." But several things ruined that trope for me in this book. This book was published in 2008 and is now being republished by Ellora's Cave. I can only hope that they are fixing some of the issues that this book holds.
First, there be spoilers here.
I do thank NetGalley and Ellora's Cave for the opportunity to read this book.
Lane Gerrard is angry a newspaper article claims that he has a son. When he confronts the child's mother she's a complete stranger. She claims not to have leaked the story to the press. Of course she's not the boys mother she's his guardian. But Kate has a stalker, which was caused by the article. As Lane and Kate get closer, Kate's safety is called into question
This is an ideal read for those who do not like explicit content in their romances. I liked the characters, but overall it was a little bit too tame for me. I prefer my romances a bit more raunchy. ARC courtesy of NetGalley
What would you do if suddenly a man started pounding on your door accusing you of being a gold digger? That suddenly you are being accused of claiming that your son is the love child of a famous athlete? That not only is this the case but that YOU are the one who leaked it to the press? How would you handle this? Shelly Munro poses just that in Playing to Win.
Kate Alexander has struggled to overcome an abusive relationship. Working hard to offer a good life to her son.. the child her sister gave birth to and loved so dearly before she died of cancer. A Strong woman who has survived a lot of grief. But finally her life is going wonderfully. That is until this lunatic started pounding on her door accusing her of all sorts of really remarkable things.
Lane Gerrard is at the peak of his career, an international rugby player who has just returned to play for the home team. Local boy makes good. The last thing he needs is to be accused of fathering a child ten years ago.. then neglecting that child. To say he is livid is putting it mildly. That is until he sees his "child" knowing that if he's not the father, someone in his family is. Now all he has to do is figure out who? and How? and maybe convince sexy Kate Alexander to work with him.
A hard journey for all three of these individuals, Lane, Kate and young Jamie.. just who is his father? Who leaked this information to the press? And who is now stalking Kate? Is this about Lane, Kate or Jamie? Lots and lots of questions and plenty of fingers to point..
Ms Munro kept me guessing right up to the end.. With every new circumstance I was convinced I knew who the villain was.. that is until I turned the page. And believe me I added everyone to my list of suspects.. Old Friends, Family, New Friends, Agents, Customers... the list goes on..
Through it all, Kate and Lane's relationship grew. This was not a one and done, it was a wonderfully sweet romance that grew out of insanity. Two, three, individuals with a common goal. Finding the truth. And slowly falling in love.

This was working out reasonably well until it hit the 90% mark and then degenerated into little more than a farce - SO OTT that I found myself laughing at the sheer fanfic awfulness.
An easy read on the whole but too many incidents were left unexplained -
Kate is an aromatherapist and is raising her sisters son after she died. Lane is a rugby player and someone leaked to the press that he had a son, which he knew nothing about. He goes to Kate to confront her and accuses her of trying to get money from him. Reporters are camped at Kate's house and bugging Jamie at school. When she finds the birth certificate the name of father is marked out. She orders a new one and they must wait eight days. But when Lane sees Jamie he knows he's his or his brother's because he looks just like them. Someone is playing with Kate. Having her almost arrested for stealing garden gnomes, leaving threatening messages, breaking into her house and destroying it, and flattening her tires. As Kate and Lane try to figure out who's stalking her, they get to know each other and the heat really turns up. Can they have a relationship or will someone come between them?
Katherine is bringing up her sisters son after she fell victim to cancer. A local newspaper suggests that the boy's father is local rugby superstar, Lane Gerrard.
He's returned home after playing overseas, demanding answers and determined to find out if Jamie is his son. Add to this the fact that since Lane appeared in her life, Katherine has been subjected to dangerous attention from a stalker,; receiving threatening notes and letters initially but this soon escalates into property damage and vandalism.
There are many layers to this story. It's well written enough to keep you guessing throughout the story. My first guess as to the identity of the stalker was massively wrong. The domestic drama involving Jamie and Lane could have been explored a little more, which is the only thing that stopped me giving this book five stars. Still a highly enjoyable read though.
Imagine opening the door to tabloids learning that "your son's father" might be a famous rugby player. Only he's not your son, he's your nephew and you've never heard of the rugby player who arrives at your doorstep. To make matters worse, he can't remember the actual mother of the child. Then you start getting harrassing notes, phonecalls, flat tires and a break-in.
Both characters really annoyed me. She's all worried about whether or not her kid is his son and your dead sister's documents are no help. And instead of a DNA test, which would solve everything, you choose to worry?? I'd get a lawyer and figure it out. Then again, I'm American, not from NZ. Perhaps things are different there?
This was a very good story about a young woman who was raising her dead sister's son alone. She is going along in little world when a angry, handsome man appears at her door calling her a goldigger among other things. He turns out to be a star rugby player and thinks she sold a story to the magazines for the money. Tempers flare despite an attraction between them. The ending is a surprise and the story spellbinding. It was hard to put it down.
I didn't know really how this story was going to turnout. It seemed not so interesting because the DNA kept being put off,but that's why the mystery of paternity kept me in suspense. This was great and suspenseful. This book has great perceptions on how to never let anyone have control over your life, they can take advantage of you in every way you're vulnerable. Lane lost many years of happiness because he gave control of his life over to someone.
I just couldn't finish this, I struggled, I got about 40% through and I had to shut it. Who has their son/nephew allegedly kidnapped and keeps their aromatherapy/massage appointments? Who DOES THAT?! The dialogue was equally abysmal. I know writing takes a lot, and I admire anyone who can do it; I hate writing poor reviews.
I found this story of interest, not only for the mystery and romance, but for its setting. I don't know much about New Zealand, except for it being the filming location of The "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, but I certainly would like to learn more about the country ... and the sport of rugby!
This book is average in the romance department. The plot is good enough, but not very romantic. The character who turns out to be the psycho is not believable. Peop!e like that don't act normal. They show some signs of unbalanced behavior.
Kate is a woman with a spine (despite her past) and Lane is a man with a body to die for. A sweet story about a man, a woman and a child. Throw in a plot twist and you’ve got this book. An excellent read.
This is a pleasant story about a woman raising her nephew. I loved how sweet Lane is and how he was willing to let Jaime know him without forcing it. The romance is sweet and there is a bit of a mystery thrown in. Overall it was a sweet romance and a quick read.
I really enjoyed this book. The story was new and interesting. The mystery good wit many twists. And the characters likeable and well developed. The attraction seemed genuine and a little steam thrown in for added enjoyment
Playing to Win. Shelley Munro Review from Jeannie Zelos Book reviews. So, in the mood for a straight romance I chose this. Its a romance, and also a puzzle with danger coming to Kate along with the solution. I liked Kate, she's mum to her dead sister's child, and she and Jamie have carved out a contented life for themselves. Then their world is turned upside down when tabloid papers print a story over Jamie being local hero and rugby player Lane's son. Of course as always they're not interested in the truth – just want scandal for the ratings. Kate is bombarded with Press at her home, Lane completely blind sided by the fact he may have a ten year old child, and Jamie struggling with insecurity wondering if he'll be taken from Kate...Kate's firm and insistent, nothing will take him away from her, though she's willing to let Lane build a relationship with him. Along the journey to the truth there's a potential kidnapping, danger and attacks on Kate’s home and business, and threats to her safety. Lane steps up his protection of her and gradually falls in love. He just needs to persuade Jamie and Kate that they should be a family. Its a fun romance with a snippet of danger, not heart stopping but a more subtle kind that creeps up quietly and lands with a bang. The police were great characters too, becoming regular visitors. The protagonist didn't really come as a shock to me, but it was well done, and everything added up – I hate when we find out who the “baddie” is and it doesn’t fit the clues we've had, none of that here though. Looking back we can see how things build up to that dramatic climax and reveal. Priced at £0.99 for 228 pages its long enough to let the reader get into the plot. Its a bargain for lovers of gentle contemporary romance. Stars: Four, fun read but a one off for me. ARC supplied by Netgalley
Three people's lives are about to be turned upside down when a tabloid news article is published. A famous rugby player is accused of having a child out of wedlock, and walking away from the boy. The single mother does not know the rugby player, but her son looks just like him. As accusations fly and they work together to uncover the mystery, she gets a malicious stalker, putting her and her son in danger. I enjoyed the book very much. The mystery and suspense was riveting and made this a quick page turner.
A bit of an ongoing mystery, however, its a pretty obvious "Who dunit". It couldn't have been anyone else. Its a pleasant read stretched out quite a bit but still a decent read
Way to long for what you get at the end. The story went on, and on, and on. There was very little mention of rugby, and Lane's coaches must be way too lenient with there players for all the time he had away from practice. Story also jumped around, the author would lead up to a point but never follow through, instead she would skip over to what happened an hour later or two days later, never following through and explaining the event she led up to. Not a fan. Won't be reading anymore by her.

Overall Rating: 3 Rockin' Stars!!!
The summary for this book had me set my expectations high. I thought with a super-hot professional rugby player, Lane Gerrard and an attractive sweet innocent heroine, Kate Alexander there would be many scores! But, I was left unsatisfied in the end. The story involved a gigantic secret being revealed, and the couple discovering how to deal with the penalties of the match.

I'm giving this book 4 stars. Kate Alexander pretty much has a normal life. After her sister dies from Cancer she takes custody of her son. After all these years one day Lane Gerrard shows up at her door and her life changes. Lane is a professional Rugby Player and wants to know if her son is his. Kate can't help but notice how much her son really looks like Lane. Kate is not like any woman Lane usually goes for but her feistiness makes him more than interested. Waiting on proof that Lane is the father a series of events start happening and whoever starts blackmailing Kate does not want her anywhere near Lane. This story really held my attention. I kept wondering who would cause problem and was shocked to find out who it really was.
A hot athlete in any sport, in any country, always makes for an interesting hero character. In this story, the fact Lane is a professional rugby player doesn't really play much into the storyline other than to give him the celebrity status that would make stories of an unknown child paparazzi furor.
Kate has been raising her sister's son since she died from cancer 4 years back. Suddenly, her world is turned upside down when a tabloid story is published, claiming Lane to be the boy's father. In the middle of trying to confirm/deny paternity and avoiding a crazed stalker, they fall in love.
A pleasant story. As is typical with this genre, sometimes, there were places in the storyline where I scratched my head with a "huh"? Overall, though, if you're looking for a quick easy read, this fits.
Lane learns very fast that you don't insult Kate, "I may not be well off but that doesn't give you the right to accuse me of...of scandalous muck-raking to pay my bills," she snapped, emphasizing each word with a finger jab at his chest." Lane he can be sweet and caring when the boy wants to be, "hell, I'm sorry," he said. "Put my temper down to lack of sleep last night. Can I give you a ride home? By way of apology?" He will defend his private life, "no, damn it!" Lane pushed away from the counter, no longer calm and relaxed. He prowled the space between the table and the counter, reminding Kate of an agitated leopard. "You don't see. You and me, our relationship, is private. The only person I've ever discussed my personal life with is you."
This was not at all what I expected from Shelley Munro.
A rugby player finds out he has a son he didn't know about and sets out to confront the boy's mother. When he meets her, he finds out that the mom isn't his biological mother but his aunt. His son' s mother died years earlier and his aunt adopted him. Lane, the hero and Kate, the heroine try to figure out sure paternity and who leaked the story to the tabloids. They are also try to figure out the dynamic of this new family and who is stalking Kate and why.
I really did not care for this book. I found it tedious and boring. Do not even get me started on the love scenes. They were pretty much sleep inducing. It wouldn't recommend this to someone who likes graphic love scenes but maybe to those who like a simple romance.
3.5 Hearts I liked this story. It lets you know that sometimes things happen for a reason. As I got ready to write the review I see that it is a reprint which now makes sense. Some things in the story seemed dated but I wasn’t sure why. Now I know.
This is a typical sweet romance. It has a man who isn’t looking for love, a woman who thinks her life is complete, a boy who has been through enough already and a little bit of suspense. It is a relatively quick read. It is well written even though slightly dated but still enjoyable.

I, uh, hmmm…this wasn’t quite as polished as I wanted it to be. There was a lot of promise in the cast of characters and in the basic underlying plot but somehow, the execution was off. Secret son, tragic circumstances, malicious presence(s) in the background but the relationships (main and supporting) didn’t quite ring true or develop fully. There were a lot of places where I wanted a quick back-story, a short blurb, anything to explain a feeling, a connection, a situation. There were a lot of “huh” moments in this for me so I could not get into the story or relate to any of the characters.
What an excellently thrilling romance! Quite a detective story, with the stalker and the son's parentage. The romance was very realistic, given the circumstances of the heroine's past and the pressures of the present. More of a gradual build, followed by a slow burn. This story entertained from beginning, to the happy ending. The villain was subtle until ready to be revealed and all the loose ends were neatly tied up. Brilliantly plotted, without losing the momentum of the story. I loved the characters and the way they weren't over-done. I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.
Lane and Kate find themselves in a precarious and complex situation. They work together to find out the truth of her son's parentage and cannot quite fight the attraction between them. Kate is also being harassed by someone or several people as they try to work out if Lane is the father. Kate continued to downplay the incidents and called them pranks not realizing the escalating violence. The police take the information but do not have many leads to go on. I love Kate's strength and realize it was grown from deep pain and mistrust. Only she can decide to open up and trust Lane.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
