The God of Jazz: Fugue, Concord

Rate this book
After years struggling to realize his dream of directing a feature film, on the final night of his fundraising campaign Godard is on the cusp of having everything he ever wanted. The man he loves is upstairs waiting for him, and he's just a few dollars short of his GoFundYourself goal.

Then everything falls apart.

His personal and professional life in ruins, when his old nemesis from film school offers to fund his dream project if he's willing to shoot it in Spain, Godard knows it's a deal with the devil. But he also has nothing left to lose.

Among the labyrinthine streets of Barcelona's Barrio Góthico, the city's vibrant music scene, and the sun-gilt beaches of the Costa Brava, Godard begins shooting his dream project and putting his life back together, largely under the domineering gaze and deft touch of Ángel, the god of jazz.

But Ángel is keeping a secret, and a deal with the devil always comes at a price.

Growing up near Los Angeles, I spent much of my time frolicking in the Pacific Ocean and penning angst-twisted poetry. Now I'm living in sunny Spain writing pathos-riddled fiction. Ironically, two of my favorite things are traveling, and swimming in the ocean, despite increasingly intense phobias of sharks and flying.

I've always loved the music and substance of words, always loved writing in well-worn notebooks by hand, tapping at the keys of the computer, and, of course, conjuring up stories.

And from my earliest memories, I've always been fascinated—maybe obsessed?—with sex and sexuality.

In my writing, sex is the medium, the expression, and the tool of discovery for my characters' insecurities, the needs that drive them, the comfort they can't live without, the joy and relish of life that makes each of them intense, strange, and alluring.

I have so many mixed feelings about this book. I went back and forth with my rating so many times. For those that are familiar with Varian Krylov's work, The God of Jazz is not a dark read, like Bad Things. There is angst and pain, but it's on the lighter side, closer to Dangerously Happy.

It's not that I hated everything in this story. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of things I found interesting, like:

~The strong sense of place and the magnificent description of Barcelona.

~The movie Godart was making. I usually don't care about these stuff in my books, but this was really interesting. It was like a plot inside another plot, and Godard's reactions when he saw his characters come to life almost brought tears to my eyes.

~Godard's journey. I'm a firm believer that when life gets too much, it's always best to take some alone time and contemplate things. That's what Godard did, and it paid off. I loved that part of the story.

Sadly, in my case the negatives overpowered the positives. What didn't work:

~The prose. Oh man...the prose was so flowery and purplish at times. I even dare say convulted. I mean, it is weird when a blowjob is described as...

"...worshiping before the stunning sight of the triad of godly jewels...

~It was too long and wordy.

At 50%, it all took a nosedive for me. I'll spoiler tag the rest of this review. Read at your own risk.

This really is a dissenting opinion. Most reviewers rated this with 4-5 stars, so I'm definitely the cheese that stands alone.

For me the most important thing in a story is the writing. Take any genre, any theme, plot or characters, the writing would make the difference and make the book a disaster or a masterpiece. And this is my friends, is a masterpiece.
Kyrlov’s writing is special. It’s intelligent, captivating and almost poetic.

Told from Godrad POV, who’s a man that life failed him. He took an opportunity that lead him to good and bad things.
Although I would’ve killed for Angel POV, the lack of it only made him more mysterious and it served the story right.
This book is about failures, dreams, betrayal and finding the right place in the world.

I seriously think that Kyrlov is one of the best MM authors and her books are underrated (based only on the number of ratings and not reviews)
So if you love MM stories with complex characters, angst and HEA you should definitely read this ⭐️

I read two books by Varian Krylov before: 'Dangerously Happy' and 'Bad Things', and I can safely say that 'The God of Jazz: Fugue, Concord' is pretty different. Everything is a lot softer and 'sweeter', from the tone of narration to the characters themselves.

Godard is an extremely likeable person, and I rooted for him right from the start. He is passionate about what he does, he is in love with his partner of 5 years who he labels 'his rock' and, just like most of us, tries to follow his dream. He might be a bit heavy-handed with whiskey, but what the heck, that's about his only vice. Losing the two things most important in his life shakes Godard's foundation and does a lot of damage to his ability to trust people. I can't blame him for that or how it affects his behaviour towards Angel.

Angel, mysterious and quite elusive at times, has the 'tall, dark and brooding' quality of a character I full-heartedly appreciate. He certainly keeps his cards close to his chest, and I liked how Godard gets to know him slowly, bit by bit, as their relationship progresses. I really enjoyed their toing-and-froing with each other, their extremely hot encounters, and the way they go from 'one night stand' to 'fuck-budddies' to 'friends with benefits' to lovers. It is a seamless progression.

However, I can't say that I was too blown away with shock at Angel 'secrets', but maybe I'm getting a bit jaded as I grow older. :) Nevertheless, I kind of expected that more problems would come of his revelations, but no - the plot took us completely somewhere else.

I was fully set to see Godard and Angel's relationship blossom, maybe stumble and then for them to get it together again. But at 69 % events take an unexpected turn, and suddenly the flow and emphasis of the story totally change. What was a love story suddenly becomes a mission, what was about two guys finding each other turns into some kind of drama. To me the plot twists felt fabricated and OTT and a little bit too much, particularly

I also was thrown by too many references to people in the film industry. It is difficult to understand the point the author is making when she describes something/someone and uses allusions you don't get (This could be of course purely my problem, not being knowledgeable enough about the world of film). It has also to be said that there were times when the author's imagery went a bit overboard and too wordy, although I really enjoyed her language in general.

All in all, it's a nice enough story, but I would have preferred the last third to keep in line with the rest!

This story was the best!!!

The god of jazz is an amazing combination of sweet, sexy and a pot full of raw emotions. I could not get enough of the story or the principal characters of “Godard” and “Ángel”. This book is not short but still at the end, I wanted more. I am greedy for more of this couple, who made me fall in love over and over again. And that cover, just WOW!!!

Godard has always dreamed of directing his own film after graduating from USC. He has been caught up in real life of actually earning a living and has shelved his project for a long time. After his “Go Fund Yourself” approach bombed completely, Godard had lost all hope of ever realizing his dream. On top of that, his partner and “love of his life” for 5 long years dropped the bomb that he is leaving Godard for another man. Feeling betrayed and completely torn down, Godard accepts an offer from his ex, millionaire playboy Jordi Heizman to fulfill his dream to create his own film. Jordi will bankroll the entire project but the only catch being: Godard has to do the entire thing in Barcelona. And that’s where he meets his future: The GOD of JAZZ, Ángel Cardona.

Ángel is sex personified with his gorgeous eyes and a body to be envied. A true Spanish Dios. And when he picks up his trumpet, the soul of any listener is ensnared by his mesmerizing music. Godard falls in lust almost instantly.

When Ángel turns out to be the boom operator in the set of his film and thus a part of his crew, their trysts go on almost everyday. Godard is sure that his sexcapades with Ángel are purely casual. But inspite of everything his rational mind tells him, Godard knows his emotions for Ángel runs deep. But does Ángel feel the same about him??? Godard needs to overcome all his insecurities and trust the man with his whole heart to fall in LOVE and be happy again.

This entire story is in Godard’s POV (It’s not his real name. You need to read this book to find out*wink*) Godard is passionate and loyal and completely giving. He gets the worst of blows in the form of betrayal and I wanted to wring his ex’s neck for making my sweet and sensitive Godard cry. When he comes to Barcelona he has lots of doubts about how his movie will come along while also nursing a broken heart. His connection with Ángel is instant. I loved how they meshed together. Ángel made him happy and though there were many times when he had trust issues, Ángel handles each and every one of them with care and compassion. Along with the progress of his fiery lust for Ángel, we get to see him in his element directing his film and producing a sad but wonderful story, which made me cry.

“There is a reason you are not with Jordi or Michael now. Both of them taught you things that you will carry with you. Both of them helped make you the man you are now. And now, you are ready for something more. Something better. With someone who sees and appreciates your worth. Someone who will do everything they can to deserve you.” ~ Ángel

Ángel Cardona made my day. Is he sexy and gorgeous? HELL YES!!! but he was also the most loving and caring human being. He knew Godard had been burnt in the worst possible way and he is extremely patient and compassionate when those past hurts leads Godard to doubt him. He is straight forward about his past and his expectations of Godard. He is always there for Godard and I couldn’t love him enough. He is also a beast in the sack so yeah, Ángel IS THE COMPLETE PACKAGE. The happy couple made me smile and at times jump around with unbridled happiness. Godard and Ángel are made for each other and I am humbled for getting a chance to read about their romance.

“We are flawed. But we are flawed perfectly. All our worn and broken pieces fit together beautifully.”
“This love between us is a gift. I promise you, I will always cherish and care for it.” ~ Ángel

Along with the romance, the movie making is also a huge part of the story. The story of the film is given in bits and pieces as it is made and it was as involving and beautiful as was the actual romance. The detailed way in which the entire crew is shown laboring towards creating the film was truly amazing. A movie mostly runs for not more than 2 hours after which we are very eager to express our views, either positive or negative. But we never get to know the enormous effort the entire crew puts to create that 2 hours experience for us. Next time all readers would pause before passing any callous comments on any movie. At least I will. This story gave a detailed “Behind the Camera” experience that was as amazing as the actual story.

The secondary characters were another great element in the story. Godard is new in Barcelona and to his filming crew. But as they work together I loved how the bond between them grows and how they wholeheartedly support Godard after he goes through a terrible trial later in the story. The last scene where Godard delivers his speech at the premier was emotional and heart warming and I guarantee there will be no dry eyes after reading it.

For all smut lovers, the chemistry between Godard and Ángel is lava HOT. The mindless passion somehow always projected the LOVE between the lovely couple and I was extremely satisfied. Ángel with his sultry voice and sexy bossiness will make your heart beat a mile a minute. BEWARE: HE IS DANGEROUS*winks*

All in all, this read was an absolutely fantastic experience for me. The descriptive way in which the story is told was really great. I loved the writing very much. I am completely in love with Godard and Ángel and also the entire crew of the film except for the “one who shall not be named”(may he rot in hell!!) I will definitely love to read more from this author. Highly Recommend it!!!

It’s been a while since I read a book that really captured my attention and made me wish the book hadn’t ended. I was becoming jaded in my reading tastes- and then along came The God of Jazz: Fugue, Concord by Varian Krylov. And with this one book, my reading became exciting again and I couldn’t wait to turn the pages.
I completely got absorbed into Godard and Angel’s story, the mystique of their relationship, the beautifully evocative reference to the music and the incredibly descriptive images of the city and the places mentioned in the story.
I loved Godard’s passion for his art, his dream to make that one film he knew he wanted forever etched in the public’s mind. His desperate striving to fulfil this dream was inspirational and a fascinating story of one man’s journey towards achieving his goals. Of course, the fact that things burnt so hot between Godard and Angel, and that both men learnt so much about themselves as they developed their relationship, one of lust, passion, discovery and eventually, love, made this book even more readable. I’ve now found a new author to read and for that I am thankful.

This was outfreakingstanding!!! The first half was good, keeping me interested, wondering what kind of guy Angel is, some hook ups here and there. Then by the 50% or so mark I was absolutely not wanting this book to end. I'm so glad we only got Godard's POV because it really kept the mystery of Angel for me. When he declares what he wants and how he feels? Yeah, I was in love with him. I thought Godard's personality was perfect for what he went through. Nothing over the top or ridiculous or annoying. Great emotions and insecurities. And Angel was so patient without being a doormat. He was so laid back yet fierce at the same time. I loved the backdrop of Barcelona and the new family Godard found. This was a fantastic story that I never wanted to end. And can we please read more about Alistair? With some peeks into Angel and Derek???

Seldom has a story held me in such thrall that I simply could not put it down. From the set design to the characters who captured and held me without prejudice, from incredibly honest and incisive parsing of what it means to start over, even when your heart has shattered, to the sensual, full on bass notes of the rhythms of Barcelona, of love, of life… the author wove a web of such intricate design I was swept along, breathless.

The God of Jazz is a celebration of finding the courage to pursue a dream, of not locking out what the heart wants no matter how improbable or how difficult it may seem. Though both Godard and Ángel carry baggage into their budding relationship—and yes, offering barriers and what ifs along the way—there’s a subtext of hope and joy, of acceptance and shared understanding as two artists find their fulfillment in each other.

The narrative is lush and evocative, sensual and uplifting. The city, its people, its art are all part and parcel of this story of two men who redefine passion to suit themselves. Their stutter steps toward and away from each other, the roadblocks from Godard’s past, and the secrets Ángel holds close, made for a compelling read.

The writing is intelligent, the tone hopeful and uplifting, and the sense of place—of the beauty of a city whose heartbeat rests in its art and its history—second to none.

The God of Jazz: Fugue, Concord is a Five Star read and highly recommended.

**COPY RECEIVED FOR HONEST REVIEW**
So, i've read a few of this authors books before and was looking forward to this, especially after reading the blurb and seeing it wasn't going to be as dark or kinky as the previous books. I thought she transitioned from dark and kinky to semi-dark and sweet really well.
Goddard, Ángel, Jordi, Michael were all fantastically written characters. I even loved the side characters too. I thought Ángel was a poetically romantic character not just with the things he said to Goddard but also how he also spoke to him with his music. What i found really fantastic was how the author gave us a story within a story, but for me i think the story within was a kind of representation of not just Goddard and Ángel's relationship but also Goddard and his relationships with Michael and Jordi too. Yes, it was a kinda sweet story but it also hit upon a few touchy subjects too.
I have to admit, i was suspicious of Jordi from the very start, there was just something about how he acted that for me set my alarm bells ringing.
I loved the added twist that i seriously never expected to see......
Another thing i really loved was the author's descriptions of not just where they filmed; the set, studio etc, but also when Goddard saw Ángel for the second time, it enabled me to visualise the surroundings, and see Goddard staring at Ángel as though i was watching it play out in front of me.
An absolutely fantastic read !!

Krylov has a gift for translating her words into feelings, setting the mood and tone of a story in a sort of synesthetic way. The dissonant chords of failure and loss Godard experiences at the outset of the novel are as tangible as the sights and sounds of the city of Barcelona are evocative. When he first lays eyes on Ángel at the beach, the coup de foudre of lust is palpable, and that intensity of passion carries out through the rest of the novel in a big way. Every scene in which Godard and Ángel interact is permeated by a current of erotic tension. There’s a reason Spanish is known as a romance language, and the way Ángel growls and purrs and seduces Godard is an added layer of sexy...

I received a free copy for an honest review and this was my first time reading this author.

My review and rating will be in the minority.

This book had A LOT of sex. I mean A LOT. I skimmed many pages because I felt it just repeated itself. (And I am not a prude, I like sexy in my books) I craved the plot but sadly it just wasn’t there the way I was hoping. The plot felt forced and things seemed to happen just to move the book toward an end.

I really liked the “movie” Godard was filming. I was hoping to read more about it but we only received small snippets. But those snippets were beautiful. I would have read the entire screen play.

I really wish I could have liked it more.

I've never read anything by this author before so I had zero preconceptions and expectations going in.

I don't generally read dark books, and while this one had a small amount of disturbing content, it was handled well and was not at all exploitive or gratuitous.

The pacing of this novel was good, and kept me interested without feeling rushed. The progression of the relationship felt very natural, and the narrator and his love interest were both well written characters who behaved consistently. The secondary characters had enough detail to make them real without pulling the focus away from the main character. While this story had far more sex than I would prefer, it didn't seem repetitive and it did drive the plot.

The author included enough detail about the locations in the book to set the scene without making it feel like reading a travel guide.

Overall, I found this book to be engaging, realistic, and well written.

I became emotionally invested the minute I read the first page. I enjoyed the story, however, there were a few bumps in road regarding the plot which made this a 3 star read for me.

The first half of the book is stellar. Godard has been in a committed relationship with his boyfriend, Michael, for five years. He's pursuing his dream to become a director and was on the cusp of realizing that dream, (just a couple thousand needed of the $100k required to make his film) but time ran out on his GoFundMe page and he lost every single cent. Ugh! to come so close only to have it slip through his fingers. The parts I enjoyed hit me right in the solar plexus.

As if that wasn't bad enough, Michael, confesses to cheating on him with a friend. He pours salt on the wound adding "I don't love you anymore." I cringed! Talk about a direct hit to the solar plexus.
With his world crumbling around him, Godard drinks himself into oblivion until one day a silver lining pierced through his cloud of despair in the form of Jordi his first love and former schoolmate.

I won't divulge more than this as I don't want to spoil the book. I think this was a good story that had the potential to be better. Krylov's vivid description of Barcelona, made me feel like I was right there next to Godard as he embarked on his journey. Some of the twists and turns the story takes are what ruined the book for me. They were either bad, over the top or unnecessary.

On the plus side, I liked the camaraderie of the film crew. They came across as real people not fictional filler characters in a story. Reading Godard's evolvement as he regains his self-confidence and realizing the relationship he had with Howard (wasn't really love) because it pales in comparison to what he feels for Angel, is the highlight of the story for me. I deliberately made little mention of Angel in this review because he's one of those characters that readers should get to know through Godard's eyes.

Krylov, writes excellent dark and/ or angsty stories. I rate them highly between 4-5 stars. Unfortunately, this one didn't quite work for me but it's still one of the better books I've read this year.

Varian Krylov has a very unique writing style. I've always been drawn to it. The God of Jazz: Fugue, Concord is filled with what you expect from this author. But it was also a lighter read than her past stories and that was awesome because I got to see more of her range.

The two MCs, Godard & Angel have a great intensity. They are beyond hot and the sex in this book is super steamy. There is a lot of that in here too so if that's something you look for in your reading you'll get that here.

There's a great amount of realism throughout this creative tale. Believing the emotion a character is experiencing is very important to me. With Godard and Angel I felt unsure about each moment they were in.

There's a gracefulness to Varian's writing. Moments when I'm so engrossed by where I've been taken, by the descriptions, by the events playing out. Short of a bomb going off I'm not breaking free.

This is an evenly written book. Flow, emotion, realism, character building are all balanced exactly right. Not only is this an enjoyable read it's a memorable one

I was given this book to leave an honest review.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book. The beginning of the book was one that so many m/m books have. One guy thinks the relationship is great while the other is not happy and cheats before ending the relationship. That is where the similarities end. Goddard née Derek is trying to make a movie while overcoming the end of a 5 year relationship when he meets Ángel, a musician, a boom operator, the one person he needs at this time in his life. Ángel helps him overcome his relationship and the betrayal of a friend.
The story dragged at times making me look to see how much was left in the book, after 56% I no longer checked and read the book to finish.

An original and refreshing quality read

Original. Charming. Enchanting, different, refreshing like summer rain. The story starts unfolding like a slow, sweet piece of music first gathering strength before picking up courage and soaring strongly. I've not read anything as good for a long while. Easily my top read 2016. I love the colourful, vibrant language, descriptions, writing of this talented author. I'm going to be reading all I can lay my hands on by this one. This is another hard review for me to write because I know I will most likely be in the minority. I wanted desperately to love The God of Jazz but, unfortunately, that was not the case. While the book was well-written, it just wasn't what I'd hoped. There are moments in which I thought it would never pick up, as it dragged a bit in the first half. And I really didn't get the chemistry between Godard and Angel.

Maybe my lack of connection with any of the characters made it harder for me to feel this inexplicable pull the men seemed to have or maybe it was the aggressive, dominate sex they had from their first encounter. I like to be prepared for books that have a heavy dominance and submission theme. Hearing one of the MC's ordering the other to beg and calling him 'boy' is a turn off if I'm not prepared for it.

While the first half of the book seemed to drag, the second half seemed to be where all the action was packed in. There are quite a few situations and I had to ask myself why. Serial rapist, sexual assault, car accidents, surprisingly precocious children, it's all in here. It was just too much for me.

I'm sure that this book has an audience that will love it. I can appreciate the writing if not the story itself. However, by the end of this book, I was imagining myself traveling to Barcelona and sitting on the beach.

3 Stars!

Godard just watched his movie dreams die when an old "friend" offers him the chance to make his movie, if Godard will film it in Barcelona. Godard has no intention of taking Jordie's offer since their previous projects have not gone well. Plus, why did Jordie wait until after the GoFund ended to contact him? Everything changes when Godard finds out his boyfriend has been cheating on him and moves out.

It was easy to want Godard to get himself together and for his movie to be made. His doubts after everything that happens early in the book are completely understandable. It was great to see him flourish and make new friends while making the movie, friends that stood by him when things got bad with Jordie.

Godard finds himself in a new city waiting on Jordie to show. Angel is the mysterious hunk that Godard first sees at a beach and then a club. Godard initially can't believe that Angel has any interest in him, but once they get together, they are very hot. As their relationship progresses, it just gets better. Since we only get Godard's POV, as Godard gets to know Angel so do we. Angel keeps things close to his vest, but his big secret wasn't as bad as one might expect. Godard was a bit taken back, but they eventually moved on.

The movie is like a story within the story and adds a lot to the book. Jordie is a pain initially, but his motives become more obvious later in the book. While I understood why Godard chose to handle the situation as he did, I wanted more consequences for Jordi,

There were a few times toward the end that I felt like there was a few too many things added in to create drama that never really caused any issues. Overall, this book was a good read that is very well written. I love the fact that I could visualize walking on the beach with Godard or the streets of Barcelona from the descriptions.

Wonderful.

Like everything this author writes, this book doesn't just tell you the story, it sets the scene. It paints a picture. Varian Krylov has a wonderful way with words. It might be a slight departure from the usual dark, gritty stories she usually writes but don't expect it to be completely full of sweetness and light. Not everything in the world of filmmaking in Spain runs smoothly.

Godard is watching his dream go down the drain as his GoFund goal isn’t met, thus losing him all funding for the film he has been longing to make since film school. Then, his boyfriend of five years cheats on him with their friend. So, he’s pretty down in the dumps when he gets a call from another friend, Jordie, from film school offering to fund the entire project – in Spain.

Godard was a very sweet and likable character. I was behind him from the get go and really wanted to see him succeed, both with his passion as well as his love life. He wasn’t a doormat with the ex and wasn’t going to let Jordie walk all over him and his project either. Jordie was another matter. There was so much to not like about him and a sense of ulterior motives was apparent pretty right from the start.

While waiting for Jordie to show up in Spain, Godard got acclimated, and it wasn’t until he saw Angel playing in the club that things perked up for me. I loved the mysterious and sexy Angel. He and Godard embarked on a hot and steamy affair that felt very natural, especially the way things played out once they discussed their relationship becoming more. My favorite parts of this story were starring these two, and I could have kept reading about them long after the story ended.

The film Godard is making takes up a good bit of this story. It is almost a story within the story, which was interesting at first, but quickly took up page time from the rest of the story. There are also the issues with Jordie that spiraled out of control before things come around full circle and everyone is able to continue as scheduled. Some of the events seemed a bit out of the blue and a tad unnecessary, and I would have been more interested to see more of Godard and Angel’s deepening relationship. Perhaps they were meant to add more

This started slowly for me, and other than the film aspect, I wasn’t really sure which direction it was going, and that direction changed a few times throughout, which kind of threw me out of the story a bit. I did love how Godard was able to find love without losing his passion for film making in the process. He discovers he is part of a new family, and after a few bumps in the road, is able to really pull his life together. While I wasn’t completely wowed by this story, it was well written and there were a lot of aspects I enjoyed and definitely feel a bit more cultured after having read it.

This books strongest point is the writing. The line between kitsch and art can be very, very narrow, and yes, the narrative passed over it a couple of times here, but overall? Wow. The words painted vivid, brilliant pictures of locations and events before my mind’s eye and gave the characters life. I felt transported there, to the beaches, the jazz clubs and the Ramblas of Barcelona, the perfect backdrop for Derek and Angel’s sensual dance around and towards each other. A musician and a filmmaker, with the filmmaker the 1st person POV narrator so that this kind of sometimes poetic, sometimes almost flowery pictorial prose fit his narrative voice to a T. The portrayal of their romance, particularly the erotic parts, practically oozed emotion, and the writing style added intensity to everything, from Derek’s despair over his ex-lovers betrayal to his passion for the movie he’d been longing to make for years; from the way he’s mesmerized with Angel right from the start to the maturing process he goes through over the course of the story. Just engrossing.

The actual plot, though – well. It started out fine, as captivating as the writing in and of itself. Again, much of it depends on Derek aka Godard’s experiencing of events; I found his way of dealing with what happened to him realistic and convincing. Same with his reactions to Angel, from their first encounter to the slow process of getting to know each other they went through. Derek was adorable in his vulnerability and his capacity for enthusiasm, and Angel his fitting counterpart, properly mysterious, somewhat elusive and so very patient, if sometimes almost too good to be true. Also, I loved the glimpses of Derek’s film that were strew in here and there over the course of the story.
But at about two-thirds into the book, the main narrative thread suddenly veered off of Derek and Angel’s romance, and the ensuing plot twist felt like a forgotten Chekhov’s gun – a page-filler that didn’t really serve much of a purpose in the end. The resulting “Huh?”-moment didn’t actually ruin the book for me, it was too good overall for that, but it still left me somewhat bewildered and took away from my reading experience.

The God of Jazz is lighter, sweeter and gentler than other works by the same author, and with its multiple pop culture and cineastic references somewhat more intellectual, too. I’d name it a good point to start for new readers. Some editing glitches and unintentionally hilarious, overly pompous bloopers notwithstanding, it’s a beautifully written book and a deeply touching love story that I can definitely recommend.

Now that was one damn fine story. It’s a romance, a drama, an emotional upheaval and I absolutely did not want to put it down. Aside from the author’s penchant for reusing certain terms a bit too often, this story is a standout example of angst and heartbreak turned into newfound love, while also giving readers a journey of rediscovery for one of its main characters. It goes from sweet and sassy to sensual to teasingly erotic, kicking things up a bit with a touch of kink as well.

There’s no doubt that Godard has been broken personally and professionally when the story first starts out, and he’s given a chance to start over-at least temporarily. He truly believes in what he has written, and jumps at the chance to bring it to the screen-even if he might be making a deal with the devil to do it. Meeting Ángel and falling under his spell makes for one hell of an intimate story, punctuated by drama and insecurity. Their relationship just drew me in, and I was unsure until quite a ways in just as Godard was whether Ángel’s intentions were pure and true. The uncertainty was just another way to keep me glued to the pages.

I was also completely intrigued by the story-within-a-story of the movie being made-Godard’s vision being brought to life. I was just as pulled into that as I was into Godard and Ángel’s relationship, to the point where I’m actually a bit disappointed that there’s no movie for me to actually see in the end…that is how thoroughly pulled in to this story I was.

This story pulled my emotions all over the place, from heartbreak to lust to worry to fear to love and everywhere in between. The tension, drama and pain of the beach scene between Godard and Jordi (Godard’s former film school nemesis) was particularly powerful…while in counterpoint to that the intimate scenes between Godard and Ángel range from loving to passionate to raw and carnal-and are just as powerful, and at times even more so.

An emotional rollercoaster, erotic dance, and descriptive drama, The God of Jazz: Fugue, Concord was a 4.5-star read for me. This story is strictly for readers 18+ due to adult language, erotic M/M sexual content, and a disturbing scene of attempted rape that may be a trigger for some readers. I highly recommend this story to fans of M/M romance, especially those who like the extra drama from emotionally powerful scenes.

This book just blew me away. I was skeptical at first when I started reading it but I have found that those books that I am skeptical about at first are the ones that end up blowing me away in the end.

Godard (Derek) has always had a dream of producing the manuscript that he spent so long writing and perfecting. He thought that that dream was lost when he failed to raise the money to produce it. Even with that failure he thought it would ok even though he was disappointed because he still had Michael, his boyfriend of five years.

Small miracles do happen because Jordi (an old friend from film school) called up Godard and offered to pay for the production. Godard was skeptical about letting this happen because of past experiences between the two but he told Jordi he would think about it. That decision was made for him when Godard came home to Michael admitting that he had been having an affair with a mutual friend of theirs.

So Godard made his decision to let Jordi fund the movie and he left the US for Spain to make his dream come true. Little did he know that he was about to meet a man named Angel and embark on the journey of his life. Both good and bad things happen along the way but one thing is for certain, Godard's life will never be the same.

This book was packed full of so many ups and downs. The emotions ran rampant in this book but at the same time it was not over the top. This is the first book that I have read by Varian Krylov but I have to be completely honest by saying I will be reading more by this author. This book was just completely amazing. I was so into this book that I literally only put it down if it was absolutely necessary. I predict that this book will be a huge hit.

Warning: There is references to rape in this book so if you have triggers to this or mild violence I would not recommend this book. Other then that I would recommend this book to anyone who will listen.
