Follow one man’s journey of learning to hear the voice of God. By putting words to the things God has shown him through some amazing experiences, John Eldredge helps readers shed light on the miraculous truths that God is showing them right now.
Our deepest need is to live in conversation with God. To hear his voice. To follow him intimately. This is the single most life-changing habit that a human being can adopt, because it brings us back to the source of life. Yet most Christians have never been taught how to have a conversation with the Creator.
In this revised and updated edition of his classic Walking with God, John Eldredge opens his personal journals to tell a year’s worth of stories about walking and talking with the Lord.
Some of John’s stories will help readers
recall lessons they didn’t know had been forgotten, open up new horizons, andhelp them tell and interpret their own the story of their intimate walk with God.
This book challenged me, a lot. I have had a very conservative view on how the Lord speaks to me and this really softened my heart to learning to listen and slow down enough to hear.
I really like John Eldredge but this book seemed a bit choppy. Most of his books have a flow but I had a hard time finding it this time. That said it’s still really great. Lots of good insights and quotes throughout. Lots of tangible exercises and prayers to help root yourself in Christ.
This re-ignited my desire for close companionship with God. He is always speaking and wants us to know His love, deeply. Eldridge shares personally through stories and lessons hard learnt. I valued the fatherly tone, and hard hitting truths. Especially around asking God what He thinks and then “asking the next question”. Also binding and laying at Jesus feet, spirits that seek to block us from hearing Gods direction and will for our lives.
This is a book I think I’ll revisit again and again.
I was encouraged by some thoughts in the book. “Once we are in the kingdom a kingdom that is yet to come, once the world has been restored to all it was meant to be, then we will be able to live without interruption, without assault. Then we can drop our guard. But not until then. Not even in moments of tenderness and sorrow. I know it seems unfair, but the Enemy does not play fair. He is an opportunist.”
I like that this book is a truly honest view of a believers walk with God over the course of a year. But I find myself very challenged by the idea that is central to this book which basically seems to be that our thoughts can be God talking to us. To me this just rings of the stereotype you hear about in Christian colleges of a young man telling a girl that God told him she was the one. Little does he know 5 other guys told her the same thing. It seems to be some type of “magical thinking” that he can just think and hear God. Now, I do think that we can look at the Bible and see what He has said and interrogate those thoughts to see if they align in which case we can trust it. But the author doesn’t seem much to make that distinction. I believe I have much more to learn, but I appreciate the honest view into a brother in Christs walk.
I savored every page. I want John Eldredge to be my uncle. I jotted this down on the first page: "This is like the healthy, alternate reality of 'Misery' by Stephen King. A writer in CO considering his whole life."
I really liked this!! Leaving feeling encouraged and reminded how conversational we get to be with God- how He wants to hear every detail and the sweetness of hearing His voice. And reminded that we can ask Him not just for clarity and advice with the big things- but also all the little things!!
When reading the first half of this book, I easily would’ve given it 5 stars. It must have just been exactly what I needed to hear though, because he sort of lost me and I had less grace for his writing style in the second half of the book. I definitely feel challenged and encouraged and a desire for growth after reading it!
wow. the way he talks about walking with God and his prayer life is so good and attractive. it's practical and accessible. and it lines up with my experience. it's his tone, too. I highly recommend this book if you want to learn some approaches to hearing more from God in prayer.
while I don't fully agree with his... approach? beliefs? ...about spiritual warfare, I respect the guy enough to put that aside.
Good read to better understand what intimate, day to day walk with God looks and feels like
The start of the book was pretty good, illustrating what’s been missing in the lives of most followers of Christ (which is intimate walk with God Himself) and how dear a cost for it. But then I was thrown off a little bit about the many personal stories throughout the book, about family camps, struggles, family dog died, etc. But as I approach the end and look to the book as a whole, it achieves its objective: I do become more sensitive to allow Jesus into my day to day life, into my thoughts, minds, decisions, “minor or major issues”, etc., which is the core fire that keeps us going as we live our lives obeying His Will. And I learnt it from understanding the intimate conversation between John and God in the context of his life problems, along with his push back, struggles, etc. Thanks John for writing it! It’s unique book that can help us increase the day to day quality and connectedness with our dear Lord God.
I treated this as a daily devotional, because it’s best in small chunks.
I’ve longed for the spiritual mentoring and wisdom provided in Walking With God, especially while navigating a series of huge decisions years back. Eventually, through desperation, determination, and trial and error, I discovered some of the basic principles essential to conversational intimacy with the Father: start with something small. adopt a posture of surrender. be aware of the spiritual realm. But what a gift to not have to reinvent the wheel. This book is priceless for Christians seeking a practical understanding of what it means to actually walk with the Holy Spirit like scripture frequently references, versus living spiritually fruitless lives independent from him while wondering where he’s at, like I know firsthand it’s all too easy to do.
This is one of those books that can truly change your life if you want it to. A pivotal moment in your spiritual walk. I can’t recommend this book enough. I have over 50 post-it notes flagging pages I want to go back to. Eldredge shares his personal faith walk and how God has communicated with him over the years and helped him combat this intense spiritual warfare we are under. Minimizing distractions and noise is just the first step in really listening to His voice and it’s amazing what I’ve already experienced just since opening this book. I’m about to reread it, much slower, and am excited to try some practical steps that worked for Eldredge on how to discern God’s guidance.
I absolutely loved reading Walking with God: How to Hear His Voice. One of the biggest highlights for me was learning how to recognize and listen to the Holy Spirit’s quiet, gentle voice in everyday life. This book reminded me that God truly desires a personal, ongoing relationship with His children and that hearing Him is not meant to be complicated or intimidating. I was especially moved by the beautiful prayer at the end — it felt like such a sacred and meaningful moment. This book is encouraging, grounding, and full of wisdom for anyone longing to walk more closely with God. I’ve read this book several times!!
I have been wondering how to walk with the Lord day to day and this book has really helped me to see what it looks like! John is so down to earth about things and this book goes through a year and all the things that happened to him and his family. It was such a fantastic read and a book I will return to as there is so much gold to mine! Just love the way he writes and how you can see his relationship with the Lord is so essential and natural. Just wonderful!
This book is beyond amazing and beyond difficult to get through at the same time. It makes you sit and think and meditate on what he’s saying and go back to the word of God to see what it is God is trying to say to you. It’s a growth book and as such it hurts at times. It also opens you eyes to a completely new revelation and brings such joy! Be prepared to take your time with this one and let all it has to offer sink it.
my girl @skyehelker and i both underlined fully half of this book as we walked with eldredge through each season of a year spent learning to hear God’s voice + transparent, practical, intimate, and challenging 🥾 “…our deepest and most pressing need is to learn to walk with God. To hear his voice. To follow him intimately…Everything else we long for can then flow forth from this union.” 👟 instagram book reviews @brettlikesbooks
I really like the way Mr. Eldridge writes. It’s like he lets you in his mind and you’re reading his thoughts. His transparency to God and us, the reader, is simply a breath of fresh air. It’s exactly what God wants from us. Nothing dark can exist in that place. I love everything shared in this book. Good nuggets to walk away with and it left me wanting to read more from this author.
A simple approach to teaching how to listen to God, everyday life stories. These share a part if ourselves but gives experience to what is trying to be conveyed and the author does that perfectly throughout the book. Would recommend to all believers, new and mature as encouragement that will be invaluable.
An excellent devotional with a link to videos for extra inspiration and help. It helped me break free of strongholds and brought me back to that "first love" level of intimacy with Christ. The author illustrates through his own life how walking with God is to be a daily experience.
I really don't know why I read books like this and one should not take my terrible rating of it as an indication of whether you should read it or not. It is one person's viewpoint and one person's experience. I want some guideposts but I don't want someone telling me how my journey should go or what it should be like.
This was a good read. Eldredge's writings tend to draw me in and this was no different. He talks of a deep communion and friendship with God, sitting with Him and listening. Going to Jesus before anything else. We all can grow so much from reading this, learning this, and developing in it. Worth a read.
Once again this man has been used by the Spirit to give us another incredible book. I’ve read it twice and I know I’ll read it again. It’s one of those books you read once a year, maybe twice even.
It’s hard to describe why this book is so good. It speaks to real life and shows the way to have intimacy with God. It’s quite brilliant really.
One of my favorite books. I love the way it is so easy to read and how practical he makes walking with God as he goes through a full year of him waking with God himself! I love the way He talks to God and shows us how he is open to asking God question after question and letting God answer!! You must read if you haven’t!
