I'm sorry this hasn't been completed as I've been pretty much enthralled with it for two days. As it was last updated in 2017, I won't hold my breath but I do hope the author comes back to this. This is a fanfiction written in a very different way to many others I have read over the years, starting with snippets of recorded conversations from a handful of students and steadily growing into a full narrative, whilst never losing the additional views of those students and staff in their one to ones. This isn't an approach I have seen often and I was wary to begin with, but it pulled together well here and the writing quality is of a really high standard.
One of the key things here is that I really appreciated the portrayals of all the characters; large, small and somewhere in between. In some of this authors other fics, they have fallen very strongly into the trap of character bashing and I have found this to mar my enjoyment of what would otherwise be a really strong fanfiction. That doesn't happen here. None of the characters involved come across as two dimensional or cariacatures of themselves, instead additional depth is lent to characters who are actually barely fleshed out in canon. This goes for both the students and the staff, and the format allows for you to see the events from a variety of different perspectives; Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Slytherin and Gryffindor. You get to see far more of these 'bit-characters' and the author introduces the struggles and worries that each of them are battling with, whilst never losing the main focus of the story. This generally made this feel like a far more mature fic with each character being given a chance to learn, grow and develop.
I loved the depiction of Harry and the descriptions of his relationships and conversations with others; the brain damage is managed very well and the conversations and aptitude show very clearly that different isn't always defective. Whilst the 'Hermione' angle was a bit of a shock and certainly isn't something I would have considered previously, the way it is handled is both sensitive and sensible. The variety of reactions to both Harry and Herme is excellently managed and executed, and cleverly straddles both the adult and the childrens reactions. All in all, this has been an engaging, thought provoking and really well done fanfiction that is written in a very different way. I have flown through it in a couple of days and was honestly disappointed that it stopped so suddenly.
