Season 1: Episode 9

As someone who spends more time studying than buying into social norms, May is ready for a break from her constant companions. As the group get ready to settle in for a night after escaping the train, May decides she’ll take her chances foraging through the nearby woods than hanging out with the other kids. Unfortunately, Gabe also sees it as an opportunity to get to know the elusive May better. May, already annoyed, easily leaves Gabe behind her while he hobbles along with a cane after a previous injury.

What starts out as just a way to get away turns into an exploratory expedition when the two come across a wide field with some items on the other side that are reflecting the sun and causing a glare. Unsure if it’s water, May and Gabe decide it’s best for May to run ahead to scope it out and return with news. If it is indeed water then that spells good news for them. What May finds when she gets there, she can’t exactly explain. But she’s thankful for the small glass shelters when a savage storm violently and suddenly descends upon the area. Dangerous hail and cold snow are plummeting the ground and nearly cause a fatal incident. Said incident sparks a change in May and we see her ability to deal with stressful situations and to show compassion for her fellow stranded.

I feel like we’re starting to get a lot more character development at this point and that makes me very happy. It seems with each episode we are given a few more pieces of the puzzle. Looking forward to the next installment.

A new episode, a new enemy. This time they find their opponent in the weather, as they still haven't learned to not go away from the group alone.

The fast change in weather didn't really make a lot of sense to me. Also I'm wondering just how big the area is they are traveling around in, as they cross places who seem very distinct from each other.

I wanted answers in this episode, instead I got more questions. Although it seems there might be some answers soon, as it ends with a promising cliff hanger.

To be continued...

*** I would like to thank Netgalley, Serial Box Publishing and the author Andrea Phillips for sending me this digital copy of Whiteout in exchange for an honest review***

This story is mostly about May and Gabe . The teens are still indecisive, some want to stay and get comfortable, built shelter and some want to move away from the train, but for now they must eat and remember those who aren't there anymore.

May is a loner. She likes being alone so when her and Gabe go off to look for food, there's a misunderstanding. She starts to wonder about her family, friends and everything that she missed out on, she even dreams of taking the SAT's. That shows you what a determined good student she was. While out looking, a storm comes out of nowhere. This leads to quick thinking, an accident and a discovery.

I like getting to know these characters more, there's still a lot to learn about them. You start to wonder what would you do in a situation like this, where you're with a group of strangers with different ideas and lives. Will you survive? Be a leader? A follower? Or would you give up?

The kids have a new nemesis in weather, and May is still my favourite. Harrowing episode (even though no one dies terribly, which is the kind of standard the serial has set for itself), but there is some Gabe, and something that looks like hope, which has been quite lacking until now.

All of my reviews of ReMade are more plot based than my normal reviews, so they are all a little more spoilery than usual. I recommend checking out my review for the first episode before reading on!

Well they are no longer on the train nor in the jungle. May is narrating this episode, and she is dealing with a blizzard. She’s cold and alone. Gabe was with her at some point and May feels responsible for their separation, and is desperate to get him back with her.

So let’s be honest here, I hated May throughout most of this story, until I saw how much Gabe cared for her! Most of the characters are annoying at first, and then you find all sorts of redeemable characteristics as you keep reading. It’s almost like you forget they are scared, terrified, and completely alone even within the group. So yeah, you have to read the entire thing to get a grasp on what’s going on. They are all a mess. None of them know what’s going on, or how to care for themselves, and they are trying and learning, and you know what, it’s more realistic when you realize it’s not all clean and tidy.

So May and Gabe both have become better people together through their harrowing experience of almost dying in the snowstorm.

ReMade is a strange sci-fi series, and I know I made my predictions about them being snatched from the past to rebuild this world after catastrophic devastation, but why didn’t someone give them the tools to survive! Why not make a path to follow? Give them a handbook for the recently deceased, anything?! Plus, I feel awful for those who didn’t make in their second life, like come on, why let them die again. It’s so sad. OK onto the last 5 episodes…I better get some damn answers!

I just finished this episode. Well… (silence)… okay, it was good to know a bit more about the Asian achiever, May. The constipated chemistry between her and Gabe was a bit amusing. The introduction of more curious structures in the field and the onslaught of unusual weather distractions were interesting in way that it leads to more questions. By the way, it looks like there are bright lights in the distance. I guess all of these tidbits of info and quirks are being dropped all over the place in preparation for the grand finale. In the meantime, I remained unmoved after reading this episode. It’s like looking into still waters… calming, gentle, constant… oh, that was it?

Writing and editing were excellent. My passionless response has more to do with the way this slice of the pie was apportioned. It was just alright, but it wasn't evocative.

My decision is remain a passive reader and just continue reading before I can make an informed review of this whole season.

Book 9: Whiteout
Star rating - ★★★☆☆
POV – May
Would I read it again – No

** COPY RECEIVED THROUGH NETGALLEY **

Despite having not read a volume of this for a few months, I remembered where we left off quite clearly. The story is unique enough that you don't easily forget about a bunch of teenagers stuck in a wilderness that may or may not be the future, after having died and been woken up by someone like Umna.

However, I was sad to see that May got yet another POV. She's not, to me, an interesting enough character to offer her own POV so often. Half of this part of the story was shown in flashbacks – which wasn't necessary to begin with – and to make it worse half of it was weather description. Which, in my mind, proves how lacking May is in worthy storytelling POV, because the weather took up at least 50% of her time and the other half was her whining about being stupid, doing stupid things and not being any use. Which she isn't. She also, inexplicable, became very racist in this story (rallying against what she assumed was a racist comment and then saying not to turn her into a “white girl”)

Inez, once again, ruins Holden's moment in the story. I swear to God that I hate this girl with a passion because she is so not right for this story. Yet, again, she and Teddy are the two clueless idiots putting everyone in danger, making stupid decisions and not seeing the bigger picture. Once again trying to diminish Holden's authority and challenging everything out of his mouth, even when it makes sense. I can't help but wonder just WHEN are these kids going to wake up and realise that Holden is the one keeping them alive, as he's done until now, and that without him they would all be dead. If they'd only listened to him in the first at least a dozen other characters would still be alive. It's incomprehensible.

Honestly, at this point, I'm only following the story to find out what happens. It feels like, with every new episode, the essence of the original parts is slipping further and further away.

I'm giving it 3 stars simply because it returned to the original plot of living in the wilderness and tackling this new world in a different way. But I've also taken points off for May being boring and repeating most of what we already knew about her in a POV that would have been better served given to someone else. I want to read about Cole, Loki, Holden and Hyrum. I even wanted to read about Wesley, but since he's dead that's not going to happen.

Sadly, another episode that missed the mark.

Favourite Quote

“Holden carried on with his latest rant in progress. Though – he'd been right, hadn't he? About the caretakers, and the danger they'd been in. If they'd only believe him from the start, how many more would be sitting beside them now? Maybe annoying, maybe arguing, but at least they'd be alive.”

This week’s episode brings us the world through May’s eyes, who we previously spent time with in the second episode. In case you’ve forgotten, May’s food allergies are a real problem in a world where food is as scarce as it is foreign (remember, coffee that tastes like hot orange juice with a side of ass).

So, our ReMades are away from the caretakers, free of strange creatures (sabertooth, giant bunnies, unicorns?), off the train headed no where fast and…Unsure of where they are. This world is a never-ending source of pain and frustration so OF COURSE there’s a random snowstorm to nearly bury May and Gabe while they’re separated from the group. Lucky for them (?) there is a field of glass sheets to help build shelter (um, what in the world is going on in this world?).

She was the one person with nothing to contribute. The one person with no future in the future.

May is facing the stages of grief, with a little bit of anger at missing out on all of the things she’s planned, including being the first Chinese-American Supreme Court Judge. Hey, don’t count that possibility out yet - who says this world lacks the need for organized government?

Alright, so, predictions? My latest theory is they’re living in some sort of Sims world, where their spirits have been trapped in online avatars. I’m still wondering what happens when you die a second time. Do you get to go back home? Move on? Do it over and over again - ReMade inception? But really, it’s anyone’s guess as to what’s happening in ReMade! So tell me yours, if you’re following along!

I received a copy of this episode from SerialBox via NetGalley. I've got to be honest. I read the 1st and 2nd episode only. Which means I haven't read episode 3 through episode 8. Some of the previous events were mentioned briefly in this one, which was positive and reminds me the recap in the beginning of a tv series.

I did enjoy the 1st and 2nd episodes, but this one was definitely better. The writing and editing was great! We start to see a little bit of character development in this episode as May struggles with her overthinking and her ability to make decisions in stressful situations. I understand her desire to be left alone with her own thoughts, hence the running away from everyone. Her attitude though may introduce them to new dangers (the possible city she spots) or maybe a shelter and chance at a new beginning. I liked the chemistry between her and Gabe and I'd like to see where their relationship will go. We still are left with multiple questions though, about the weather, the caretakers, where they are and what happened to them exactly. I'm bracing myself for an amazing finale, but I really do hope I'm not disappointed. I do have high expectations by now.

All in all, it was really good. I haven't connected with any of the characters due to the episodes I haven't yet read, but it doesn't really matter because with stories like this one, you tend to want for them to find a safe place and start adapting to this new life. It's not like they have another choice. Or maybe they have. We'll see.

The ninth chapter of the serial ReMade. This time we concentrate on May, the overachiever. After the train wreck, the survivors are trying to regroup and May goes off to investigate the surrounding forest. She is forced to take Gabe along with her. She runs ahead, wanting to be alone, and discovers a strange field of glass tables on a hillside just as the weather turns nasty. She takes refuge under one of the glass tables as she sees Gabe get injured while following her out of the forest. We learn a lot about May and her past but my main complaint is still the sam: we still have no clue as to how and why any of these teens are in their situation. Very little has been done with the why these teens and why are they being remade and what are they supposed to be doing in this new post apocalyptic world? The characterization is very good and the action sequences are very well presented but I would like to see more background on just what is going on to cause the situation that everyone is in.

May was such a bitch to leave poor Gabe alone. I get that she wanted to be alone but that's no reason to be a huge bitch! I started out liking May a lot, she was one of my favorites but now she's just getting on my nerves. I also did not like how she got mad at Gabe because he said something about her acting racist. The white she said 'white girl', news flash May, not every white girl is racist.

I can't even go into the story as I'm just so upset that this PC crap or the everyone hates whites bullshit is starting to come books. It doesn't need to be here! If this happens again, I will drop this serial so fast. I'm just disappointed, this serial started out pretty dang cool and now... it very well may be time to flush it down the drain.

Thanks to NetGalley for giving me this title in exchange for an honest review.

This book was really good and it made me want to read more about May and Gabe's relationship. I actually like the idea that this did focus on the idea of loss of a previous life. I feel as though picking May for this concept is a good choice because she did have everything to lose. She worked so hard to achieve a dream that she will not be able to achieve. I really enjoyed the beginning of a story arc where she is slowly coming to terms with the loss of her dream as well as realizing how she now needs to make personal and human connections.

The only thing that I wish is that we get to see a little bit into Gabe's previous life and to get his perspective on the whole situation. I know that we do not have time for that in this book, but it would be interesting to get a little glimpse of Gabe and some of the other kids' previous lives and perspectives on the whole situation.

I read part 1.9 of ReMade without having read any of the other parts. I can firmly say that you don't need the rest to be caught up in this thrilling story. I was turning pages as fast as my eyes could read. This particular part focuses on the POV of May and her inner and outer struggles with this apocalyptic world that she and her friends have landed in. The terrain is dangerous and not welcoming. Her inner sorrow and desperation only deepen her sense of loss. Will May and her friends make it home alive? Read and find out.

Received from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Episode 9 of 15 in the continuing saga of Remade. In this episode we spend time with May and Gage. May likes to be in control and to her surprise, she likes to be alone. Gage wants to get to know May better and this surprises and annoys May. Will she finally let someone from the group in? Really enjoying this story. Can't wait for episode 10.

Not my favorite episode in the series, but needed to bring the story forward. I don't like May. Period. I think she is selfish and comes off too aggressive. On the other hand, they all can thank her if they finally find some safety. Or maybe it is the next disappointment in their never ending list of things going wrong.

I liked this book, though it wasn't my favorite in the series thus far. I don't know if it's because I can't connect to May as much as I would like, or what. But, overall, this short added a lot to the overall story and we got some questions answered and are left with a whole lot more to wonder about. I would recommend this book. 4 out of 5 stars.
